In his latest presentation for The Old Low Light Heritage Centre our walks-and-talks volunteer and retired Master Mariner, Martin Kenny, tells us about the life and times of Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, 1st Baron Collingwood (1748-1810).
Collingwood was an admiral of the Royal Navy, notable as a friend and colleague of Lord Nelson who fought alongside Nelson and took command of the British Fleet after Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar.
Collingwood, who has been described as "Nelson's own hero", was born and schooled in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and his family home was in Morpeth. The statue of Collingwood is a well-known and much-loved landmark overlooking the Tyne and visible from the Old Low Light Heritage Centre in North Shields.
