Heimo Korth is the last man standing in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness. His neighbors are polar bears and caribous. Say good bye to civilization and see how they do it in the arctic circle on the last frontier in America.
In 1980, Jimmy Carter established the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the Alaskan Interior, cutting off 19 million acres of prime boreal wilderness from the mitts of fur trappers, oil tycoons, and would-be lodge owners alike. Only six families of white settlers were grandfathered in and allowed to keep cabins in the refuge-of them, only one still stays there year-round living off the land. His name is Heimo Korth, and he is basically the Omega Man of Americas Final Frontier.

This guy is far from a stereotype, friendly, knowledgeable, and smart and not just smart in the sense of knowing how to survive well, but seems to be smart in general. Really interesting documentary, thanks Vice.

i think the reason he is so smart is because he was born in general population, he wasnt born in the wilderness. he went to a normal school/highschool, had a job before he even thought about coming into the wilderness. Like he said, he didnt come out there for the first time until he was 19 and that was working with a hunter helping him package meat from the game he hunted. so it goes to show you, you don't need to be born into a life like this, you can create a life like this.. yes it will be hard, he said many many things he did when he first got out there were just trial and error until he learned the proper sufficient way to do things. I think anyone is capable of doing what he is doing as long as they understand the dangers and risks they are taking.

@@toptwitchclipz7928 Completely disagree. Most kids raised in bush do exceptionally well in school and especially college. Most people can't handle living in the bush. You either break mentally, die, move out or stay. Very few make it out there or stay permanently out there.

6079SW Yea they used to. They got rid of a lot of the these older hosts. Thomas is no longer there. He always did anything that came up without complaint and they fired him over the phone after over a decade.

This is the first video of VICE I’ve seen, and I must admit, this seems far more appealing than anything that they’ve been producing of late. It’s a shame, really it is. It blows my mind that the purity of this video is flamed by so many on here. It's like the public is totally unaware of the food chain that they subscribe to- and that killing is not involved. They feel they are insulated from life feeding on life- because they did not see, nor kill the meat they put in their guts. This Man is living a pure existence- as natural and compassionate as possible. He does not relish or gain entertainment from killing. The rabbit experience only a few moments of pain. He suffered little.

+Branson Carlton If these same people who are complaining about the way these Alaskans feed themselves (by hunting) would take a look at how the food they eat is kept and mistreated then killed, they would keep their big mouths shut. . . Take a look at how chickens are bred and kept for the food industry. They spend all their lives in a cage barely big enough to hold their body, then killed after suffering. Or, take a look at the Cattle (for meat) industry, and see how they are mistreated, and in my opinion tortured.

I cringed, he idd not know how to use the simpelest form of fishing rod, not a firm hit in the head of the fish.... thinking 6,7-C is cold LOL Im a spoiled brat and still know that stuff. Wait until you see the hillbillys up in the north. Their only love is their snow scooters and some moonshine. and the love for -40C weird fucks It's all ok untill you go below -25C or so then you need other gloves etc, such a hassle

This little documentary was captured so beautifully, well done with how you managed to really show Himo and his lovely wife living their day to day life, it might be freezing in their neck of the woods but they both ooze such warmth and love, not only for one another and you guys filming but especially for their surroundings, not the first documentary I have watched with Himo and his family in it either, they are the same in them all. I respect this guy totally but he says that we shouldn't have "Civilization" but I feel like it would be a lot harder for him to survive without his shotgun and rifle. The time spent mining the ore for the lead and smelting it and getting the gunpowder is something that he could not do without civilization. Just some food for thought.

Rasta Koots It would be foolish not to take advantage of some technology. Clearly he could survive and be happy without those things but they're available and they make his life easier. Yeah having lived in alaska Heimo and Edna are real Alaskans. Everyone else acts like theyr all hard but they live in anchorage or fairbanks which is no different then say Minneapolis or other winter cities.

I think living in 19 million acres of Alaskan wilderness is just amazing and a big challenge.Heimo didn't abandon the society but he wanted to live in a place where there's no crowd no people around him so he could live a peaceful life with his wife, no city no stress and it's just amazing to live nearby nature and enjoying it's beauty.

Wow! This turned out to be so much better than expected. Watching and listening to how this family lives in the Alaskan wild gives this sense of ultimate freedom. Nowadays some people don't even go outside. It's hard to believe this is over 11 years old now. I wonder if they still are doing the same thing? Really good watch. Highly recommend if you like documentaries

Excellent doco. The right questions were asked at the right time, not done in a offensive or overtly challenging manner. Thomas and the crew also got hands on to get really immersed in the experience which no doubt helped them get a true feel for the way of life there and all its challenges. The amount of hunting and trapping at first seemed excessive but I think in that environment being overly prepared and thriving is the way forward as if the weather closes in for months you're better off with plenty in the larder than to be caught out short. Understandable they still get in salad and rice as I guess a pure meat / fat / oil diet (as the surrounding environment would dictate as nothing else grows?) would get boring after time!

+Interstate Bowhunter Hey there bowhunter. They could have eaten the bear had they cleaned it sooner.You should know that if you hunt. Fact is they left it to long for whatever reason. I certainly would have made the effort to process the bear sooner. As you 'must' know when the gases bloat the animal the risk of eating it increases dramatically.

Hiemo-my hero. He had the guts to live his dream. I grew up in Wisconsin too and dreamt of living like he has. All I cared about as a kid was hunting and trapping. He has truly "lived" his life as did Bob and the others on the last Alaskans. Hat's off Hiemo and family.

incredibly moving, touching. this inspires me so much. i spent the first 19 years of my life living in the city and now moved out to the country side, only an hour away from my usual party rocker debauchery filled lifestyle. for 3 years i made an effort to go back on weekends and indulge. Only now am i learning to be at peace, be able to observe the abundant nature around me that i never even noticed before, exquisite. And i mean it actually takes practice. sitting in a tranquil environment is not effective with chaos in my mind from the usual mind chatter or the need to be entertained. learning the importance of moment to moment living. My efforts are aimed to hold a mindset that is whole, and needs nothing else to fill it. The wonders, the lessons of wild. I feel this hole inside me starting to fill up. Il jump up so fast at the opportunity to spend time with people with such a simply wonderful lifestyle. Evolve as nature does I say, balance.
