Britain's Illegal Rave Renaissance: LOCKED OFF

Rave Culture is one of Britain’s great cultural exports, but after its first wave in the late eighties and early nineties, it was soon forced into the underground by stringent new laws and superclubs. But forward 25 years into in the midst of a nationwide purge on the nation’s nightlife, where nearly half of all British clubs have shut down in the last decade, and a new kind of scene has emerged.
Clive Martin investigates this 21st century version of Rave, where young people break into disused spaces with the help of bolt-cutters and complicated squatting laws, to suck on balloons and go hard into the early morning.
But with the police using increasingly extreme tactics to clamp down on these parties, and more than one fatality causing nationwide media panic, can the scene survive?

The girls from Liverpool said it best. The reason raves are coming back is because clubs now are all stuck up, people get too drunk and rowdy and no one lets them selves go, they stand awkwardly and take Snapchat's. Raves are actually fun, like clubs should be.

All these raves have one thing in common: a really nice woman attends all of them. She's beautiful, outgoing, she makes you feel like a real man. She's always so understanding. I'm 37 now and I haven't been to a proper underground rave since 2004, but those nights still remain my most wonderful and special memories. Two raves in particular really stand out "first two nights I tried MDMA and back when it was pure in 1999" The tracks that were played still stir up emotions I don't get from nothing else. It was all about love and feeling connected to everyone. The atmosphere was perfect, nobody took too much, everyone looked out for reach other, making sure you didn't get too hot or drink too much water, just perfect all around. I wouldn't trade those nights for anything!

Word!! I have a few older friends who raved back in the 90's and then others who did when we were in HS in the early 2000's (I'm almost 32 now), and I wish that I had gone to them back then!! I've heard so many great stories from other OG ravers, I liken them to how the scene was when I first started raving back in '09..way more PLUR and music-oriented. The scene has always had its ebbs and flows, but it has DEF changed quite significantly over the last 10 years, ever since it's become more mainstream/legalized due to EDC and other EDM festivals..which don't get me wrong, I love festivals, I just miss underground illegal parties too lol..esp desert parties!

It’s amazing how history repeats itself. The same thing happened in Sacramento at the turn of the century until promoters and cities realized how much money was involved and then you saw the big venues open up in San Fran and surrounding areas to capitalize and soon after the scene died. I imagine now it’s back underground. This all takes me back. I applaud the kids for taking it into their own hands and giving police a run for their money;)

VICE has done a fair job of capturing many different cultural phenomena, sometimes with impressive results. However, the magic and feeling of a rave is something that's impossible to put to words or capture on film, and I think this video only serves to underscore that point. The best parties will never be filmed, and it's for the best.

Yeah, I went to several all over London and the surrounding areas. Usually in condemned office blocks that were security fenced, the laws at the time preventing officers from forcing entry. There'd be someone on the gate unlocking to let people in as they arrived. I went to one a few minutes walk from London Bridge station, but since it wasn't as residential then, people didn't care all that much about the noise and the buildings were usually pretty much gutted before anyone arrived, so there was no criminal damage. Just a soundsystem, a lot of people, and dealers lining the hallways lol. I never had a bad experience at any of the squat parties or forest raves I went to in the nineties and early 2000s before I moved out of London. The wealth divide is too big, the kids too skint, and they don't want to drink, or listen to the more commercial music in the club's. I'm lucky in that I live in Bristol and there are still a lot of good music venues here, some of them while not exactly drug friendly, do turn a blind eye, and there's a fair amount of musical diversity. But there's something about an illegal rave that's just so much more uplifting and euphoric, even without the drug aspects.

There's a possibility that it HAS to be illegal for people to enjoy it--that the kind of partying it is involves not just "fun" (doing drugs and being very physically attractive) but the defiance of it is a big part of what makes it thrilling for the people that are into it. So, keeping it illegal keeps it happening, and legalizing it makes it stop for the most part. Remember, it's not the parties themselves that are illegal, it's selling booze without a license, and selling illegal drugs.
@supahdupah02
@supahdupah02 8 ай бұрын
your comment is kinda right, the things you say are correct imo but there are more aspects about it too, it's not the only thing that makes us want to do illegal parties... And yeah, maybe they should start with legalizing those things first :p

I was introduced to the rave scene when i was 15, my first rave took place on top of the biggest cemetery in Queens, partying on the mounds of dirt from the graves. It even got shut down which made it much more memorable. My short lived DJ career also started in the rave scene.

you get pits at the gooduns man, half the tek and core heads i know are into punk, crust or metal as well. I'd love to see more shit like this come to the punk scene. Not that there aren't squat parties, but I'd love to see that scene grow to this kinda scale!

I was in the Portland, Oregon rave scene starting in 2000 to like 2006. It was some of the best experiences of my life. It opened my mind and turned me into a better person.

I can totally relate (though my own experiences date a lot later + were mostly on mostly legal parties). *This* is exactly what is missing from all media coverage I have ever seen: The connectedness, the caring, loving culture, everyone asking everyone if they are okay, if they drank enough water...it's just one big family. Much love to all ravers and dancers and lovers of electronic music

Whoot whoot, 420 crew present.....Portlands scene got a start by like 98, 99. Then full swing by 01. Went to a warehouse party that got shut down early. Miss those days and the crews that ran the streets. Portlands dead

I was still really small but I went to some raves with my cousins and honestly those parties were bonkers. Parties today are so bland. Kids are just taking pictures the whole time, they don't even speak to one another, just oggle each other down like some kind of filth. Really nasty environment.

That's exactly the time and place I started going to my first ones. I used to go to after hours raves at the Paris theater near burnside. Watching this took me back, to some deep woods hardcore events. I prefer the legal festivals now, lol. I don't mind spending the money to not be hassled

Haszyszyn HSN nah I go and see live metal bands that actually have talent of making melodic compositions with real instruments. A rave where everybody is gurning to some sub par shite isn't for me anymore.

I was 15 when the rave culture hit the first time round.....ahhh the happy years that followed. Then the scene got commercialised but the tunes were amazing in the clubs, which were still good back then. It made me happy on this vid to see young free spirits going out into nature, round a fire, doing whatever recreational ;);) and dancing in the tent. No bother.... how youth should be. Now older and wiser...I feel that theres something very shamanic about rave culture. We had our own summers of love in the 90s and 00s and this cynical world needs it again....rave on peeps 🙌✌😷

"People have been gathering together in groups and transcending their pathological individuality through music and ritual since the beginning of time..." -JBP Just an excerpt from a conversation that I committed to memory that my late 90's and early 2000's rave scene experience(s) here in Detroit inspired. Even in such a City as Detroit which is said to be the birthplace of this genre, the vibe, the experiences, and the Love were, and still are the most beautiful and amazing memories I have of my youth. "Techno" and the heartbeat of Detroit's minimal techno and house music provided the soundtrack to my young life. Where I was once an acid tripping slam dance and mosh-centric teenager through the sonic energy nu-metal (rage against the machine, Korn, etc.) Provided my young soul, the beautiful heartbeat of this music genre and the chemical soup, of suburbanites and city dwellers alike, I was shown the love and belonging our current society cultures right the hell out of each individual that doesn't seek the deeper truths of our existence. Love these pieces ❤️ Keep em coming vice 💪🙏💯 PLUR

i used too go following the raves in my younger days .. in fields and hidden areas .. the chase was exiting and fun .. the comrade spirit was amazing met most of the best people in my life when attending .. its a shame that this country sees them as such a bad thing .. if they just allowed it then it would be much better and safer .. cos dont get me wrong it did get risky and there was many times that it sketched me out or was harmful .. but most of the time it was because the police were causing problems and instigating the troubles .. when they were left alone it was good .. it was great infact .. i miss going too them .. tbh ..
