Derek instead of direct exhaust to the outside you should consider a dust collector. It will capture all the dust and you recirculate the air inside the shop. Remember that whatever you exhaust you'll have to make-up. The air will come from outside either trough the HVAC outside air intake or via garage doors sills and any cracks in the building shell and you'll have to heat and cool that air. The duct connection to the table looks like about 12in diameter perforated duct meant for a dust collector. You need a lot of static pressure to pull the recommended airflow (I'm going to guess in the neighborhood of 1000 cfm at 1.5in static. A barn fan (prop) trough the wall won't generate that kind of airflow, on top of that you'd be exhausting 2 1/2 of your 5 tons of cooling. Check your table manuals and talk to your HVAC contractor. I am an air balancing technician by trade and that is my recommendation for you to really save $$.

@warrenmichael918

Everything you said makes sense and should be taken seriously i think but the reason i wouldnt want to just pump it outside is because its steel dust and it will get all over his shop and rust it as its blown all over the tin! I would have a serious filter setup on the exhaust side of that table!!
@alnov91
@alnov91 Жыл бұрын
Does it also make sense to install a drop ceiling?
@CapitanDart
@CapitanDart Жыл бұрын
Simple dust collection is not what you need for a cutting table like this. The point of venting it outside is because of the deadly gasses it creates in the room. It takes a filtering system specifically designed for this type of application if you are wanting to re-circulate the air.
@andybayliss2020

@@toysoldier46552 in my shop, I have one 2 hp dust collector hooked up at the end of my line of tools (just the blower portion is inside). I piped it outside and into the top of an old 500 gallon oil tank I installed the top of the dust collector on top of the tank to allow the pressure to escape. I cut a door in the side down low. When I have to empty it I shovel it out and into cardboard boxes and pack them tight like a brick. The boxes are then thrown into my outdoor boiler to heat the shop. Any spillage is outside and the 4 winds take it away.

Hey Derek, I'm a HVAC tech up in canadada. I completely understand trying to keep costs down, but in my past experiences if you don't have that wall up between the two halfs of the shop. You should run both, your building needs what it needs for heat, you either run one almost all the time or end up running both half as much. You'll use more energy heating with one then heating with both.

I’m in Canada. Also I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that he’s going with Electric units and not gas unit. once you get your coffers filled again you might want to consider a solar installation to offset and be able to crank the HVAC. it's getting really cost effective these days, and with your giant roof on the shop you could get a pretty big system. alternately you could even do ground mount thats high enough to park cars under and keep them out of the rain

@@davidcatlette9697 Right... Couple of things. Solar still produces when its cloudy, just not as well as when it's sunny. You don't use solar 'instead' of grid power. You use it for when the sun 'does' shine and grid power the rest of the time. For a place like this, any sort of sunny day would run the heat or cooling for free. That's how it works for me.

The struggle is real. I grew in that weather. The trick is to not beat the heat, its to reduce the humidity. Toss a few dehumidifiers in there during the summer. Keep the bay doors down. Sounds like it would turn into a sauna, but trust me... worlds of difference. Plus everything doesn't get the "Tennessee slime" all over it. Also, make sure the units have a drain that can't be plugged easy, cuz they are going to produce a lot of water. Happy for ya brother, in everything. Glad to see a good guy winning at life. Derrick have the septic guys come out and take both lids off of the septic tank. Have them check the inlet and outlet pipes. Inlet tee and outlet tee are at different levels inside of the tank. The tank moved a lot, it probably crushed the pipes or pulled the tees lower in the tank, and that will make it malfunction.

He bought a 40 or 50 foot long roll of plastic, hung it from the ceiling and rolled and unrolled his 'wall' whenever he needed it. eventually hooked it up to some kind of small motor to do the turning of the roll but he still uses it every summer/winter in MN. I spent 7 years working in a 40X60X19 at the peak, shop. I also spent 6 years installing and servicing garage doors. I STRONGLY suggest you insulate those overhead doors. Uninsulated, they are a huge heat gain in the summer, and heat loss in the winter. As an example, I would shut the heat off on Friday, when I closed up the shop, and turned it back on Monday morning when I opened back up. Even in zero degree temperatures, the shop never got below 60. In the summer,when it was 90+ degrees, the shop felt like it was air conditioned. Just a suggestion.

Just got around to watching this. I think I understand where you came from.., but don't apologize for doing well and being successful. You have worked hard to get where you are. You deserve the finer things in life.. like heat.. and cooling... 😊

I personally work for an HVAC company and if it were me, I'd do about 75 in the summer (especially being a 5 ton on each side) and 60 in the winter. And I'd also just leave it set at that temp. If you keep changing it back and forth or turning it on and off when you need it, you're gonna be using more electricity than if you'd just leave it on at a set temp.

In the 80's I talked Mack Trucks into putting up ceiling fans, we had 18ft ceilings at the peak. After putting them in, we had to lower the furnaces 8*. We did not have the Big Ass fans like you have, ours were actually experimental and looked like airplane propellers. Smart move!

Derek make sure to buy enough APC backups for your server/security if you haven’t already. Especially with your travel schedule. Stay online even if power cuts for any reason. (And secure them)

They use big canvas curtains in aircraft paint hangers to divide up the booths. They make different thicknesses and sizes different. They put them on tracks so they can be pulled out of the way. I think the automotive paint guys use something similar on their sand booths. Like a giant shower curtains. Just an idea

Also a guy could pick up a bunch of pallets to keep parts on, you can move em around on a pallet Jack. Might help organizing and raises them up off the concrete.

Nice one, Derek! Now you just need a bit of insulation, and solar on the roof to run it all.

You did good on the brand of units. Goodman are a very good brand. They honor the warranties with no hassle. I know I've been doing hvac for 35 yrs and that's the brand I install. You shouldn't be disappointed

You should come up with a VGG video game. That way we can have Derek go on a different trips working on different cars to “revive“. I would buy it and I would fly it.

5 "tons" of A/C is ~17.5 kW of cooling power. 10 "tons" of A/C = 35 kW. To be honest I can't get over the fact that getting the shop insulated is less cost effective than installing lots of heat pumps, the cost of energy is so different in Europe than in the US.

If you could Tig weld aluminum, you could probably add material to the XR hub and machine/or grind it, you could maybe make a spacer ring with your plasma table .. might be simpler to find another Honda wheel that will work. My dad was always a champ in resuing our broken go machines and helping us fix em .. he'd say something like, now, try not to ruin it in the first 30 minutes, Ok? That meant after 30 minutes we were back to trying to ruin/send it.

Next project. You have the land add a massive solar farm with off grid inverters to power the shop. My shop has been off grid for 3 years now, it's not as big as yours but if you have the land use it.

even if the A/C could just knockdown the humidity will make a huge difference. Maybe consider tinting the windows on the new side to keep the heat out? Did you sort out the flooding issues behind the shop? Maybe a guy needs a lean to along the back?

You may want to consider solar on the roof of that big garage to power all those heat pumps. Maybe partner up with one of the KZfaq solar channel folks, make some videos of the design and installation.

I have a 50,000 BTU shop heater in my 2 car garage, it costs me nearly nothing and I never have to touch another cold tool again. Would never do it any other way. Summer it stays pretty nice on its own from being attached to the house. We need longevity out of you, so whatever it takes to make yourself comfortable... Do it

In hindsight, maybe leaving that end wall up when you expanded the shop would have been an idea. Could have cut an opening big enough for items to pass through while still being able to enclose one half of the shop if needed.

As a florida man, I wish I had an a/c shop. No insulation at all though, it would take so much energy to cool. I can't justify the cost since it's just a hobby garage/shop

Couple other thoughts. For water line: install low-voltage flow meter with relay to solenoid valve on the unattended water line; set max use gpm flowrate on the meter and if it ever exceeds that set rate for more than a designated time, it kicks relay to automatically closes the solenoid valve to shut off the excessive water flow, which may be a pipe break; probably have them these days that can integrate with security system for remote alerts and phone monitoring. For plasma cutting table, consider a heat recovery ventilation unit (HRV); exhausts bad air and dust to outside, but recovers and transfers the heat from the exhaust air to the incoming fresh air; can be a big help in winter to keep air quality safer when working in a closed/tight shop with doors closed during cold weather. Not an expert, but just some thoughts.

Enjoyed the content being in HVAC for 33 years. Started in southern Ohio where I'm from so I've installed many heatpump systems. I moved to Wisconsin 24 years ago and I worked with a gentleman who invented The Duct Sock. He's a engineer his name is Dave Jones he is a West Virginia boy who went to school at The University of Kentucky. He came up with it for a car wash project. Needing something that wouldn't corrode. His wife sewing up the prototype out of canvass. Like a couple other people had responded I sure don't know why they cut support board's 😊 just saying
