China's "Psycho Boom" From Life in Lockdown

Mental health has long been a stigmatized topic in China. Under Chairman Mao’s rule, psychology was dismissed as a bourgeois self-delusion, and was even banned until the 1970s. But since the early 2000s, growing interest in mental health has created what’s known as a “psycho-boom”: more and more Chinese are opening up about their mental health struggles and seeking treatment. The collective trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic has further allowed people to open up in ways that never before seemed possible. Pop psychology and mindfulness-oriented apps have flourished, giving once-stigmatized discussions of mental wellbeing a new lifestyle cachet. This surge in interest has created a new problem, though-with lack of regulation in mental health care making it difficult for people in need to find reliable therapists.

The nuance is lost from the translation in the end. Though it is literally correct, but it's more like "Don't burden yourself with these weight imposed by others. All the responsibilities or duties that you think you need to fulfil don't define you as a whole and you are not a failure if you don't follow others expectations". Think about the context that one is considered successful only when they have a car, a house/apartment, savings, and are married.

As an American psychiatrist I find it stunning that this relatively young physician was introduced as “one of the first psychiatrists” in China. Then they explain that mental illness in China was explained away as excesses of the bourgeoise classes under Mao, but I’m still shocked that an entire branch of modern medicine just didn’t exist in China until the end of the 20th century. Really unfortunate for countless Chinese citizens.

I agree and disagree. I don't think it's "human nature" that is stupid and self-centered, but the organization of our society. Having 9 mental health professionals for every 100,000 people is a solvable issue. As is lack of free healthcare in the US (including mental healthcare). More fundamentally, the profit motive of capitalism made the pandemic into a political issue, with fearmongers making bank out of misinformation, not to mention the corporations and billionaires that stole trillions of dollars from the working class using the pandemic to their advantage. Our society is not set up to fight global problems like COVID or climate change, and that needs to change fast before we have extremely severe crises like billions of climate refugees on our hands. The problems we face in the very near future will make the pandemic look like a walk in the park if there aren't significant changes to our global economic system.

I was pushed to going towards college but I wasn't pushed enough nor was I pushing because the pressure wasn't behind me on my heels. The pressure was more or less coming from being in college being depressed and not really knowing exactly what I wanted to do, so I still feel lost with what to do in general everything in life requires work and grew up never working. I can work but I've didn't have a job until I was 19. I'm 21 now and I'm honestly feel behind in life, not to say that sadly but its how I felt and I want to change and get my life together. this is a great start for the recognition of mental health as an essential aspect of cross-cultural living. There are so many things we take for granted here in the united states, like the ability to practice and not have to worry about if our clients commit violent crimes or commit suicide (because we never give "advice"). Unfortunately, the idea that people who are not formally educated in mental health service should not give mental health advice is true. Think, for instance, if you have ever had a therapist that did not help you, or gave you poor advice. That person was likely licensed and they still didn't help you. Now think about getting mental health advice from someone who isn't licensed. You might as well go seek mental health advice from your next door neighbor. Becoming a therapist takes years of training and good therapy is very distinct from bad therapy. Generally professionals agree on many aspects of modern psychology, while integrating both eastern and western ideas and approaches. The psychiatrist in this video is correct in saying that nothing can replace a well-trained professional. If you are interested in helping, do the work yourself first.
@whatsupbudbud
@whatsupbudbud 2 жыл бұрын
I used to want to be a psychiatric therapist, then I got mental health issues myself (which I fixed myself mostly) and then I visited a therapist who didn't know what questions to ask as my story was too overwhelming to her. So each person's mileage will vary but the most important part is the availability of friends and family for social support and the strength to ask them for help. A lot of people don't have this social support net, so anything helps. I don't suffer from mental health issues anymore but have come to understand that, at least in my case, they stemmed from being alone in the city. People are very self-centered there and there is no sense of community, no belonging or care about thy neighbors, etc. Moving to a smaller town helps, being around nature helps, doing physical activity helps, being mindful of the moment helps. Don't really see why being elitist about those who wish to help is needed.

I thought I was the only one who actually benefited from social distancing measures. Before I would go to the store and would get swamped by crowds, people routinely invading my personal space while thinking nothing of it. And being expected to actually go to social events and gatherings. I was hanging by a thread. But now I can breathe. I'm no longer the weirdo that can't handle crowds. Everybody is mindful of personal space now. It makes my life so much easier. If I'm having a really bad day and find it hard to will myself to go someplace, people are more accommodating because staying home is now encouraged. When I have to go to the store, I can usually get in and out without practically being ambushed by other customers. I no longer have to hold my arm out the whole time or use a shopping cart to keep people out of my bubble. I no longer leave the store completely frazzled and I have more energy to do more stuff. I don't have to constantly yell, nag and remind people to respect my personal space because the government does all that hard work for me. I'm enjoying this much more laid back, flexible, socially distant way of life a bit too much. I worry about what will happen when these restrictions are removed and people once again start gathering in ungodly throngs in every public space imaginable and social expectations return to their pre-pandemic level.

What I find so interesting about this is that towards the end the professional says "The world is fine without you. The sky isn't going to collapse". To any Westerner, this might seem like something that means "you don't matter", which would not be comforting from a mental health point of view. But to the Chinese and their culture, as they see themselves as a part of a whole collective of people, they feel that they matter too much and that they have to big of an impact, which gives them immense pressure. That is why the saying "the sky isn't going to collapse" is comforting.

This is something that is sweeping through America too. Currently there are two very distinctive categories of people. There are the functional and the non-functional. To be functional does not mean your life is perfect but instead it means you are capable of taking care of yourself and/or your family i.e. you can hold down a job or you go to school without having to visit the nurse all the time. Functional can maintain a relationship with a significant other. Functional doesn't feel the walls closing in at 3am and needs to call 911. Functional can be counted on to be at work on time and be there each and every day unless truely sick or injured. Functional doesn't call out sick at a new job week one. Then there are the non-functional, which is a rapidly increasing group. The non-functional might be capable of getting a job but holding onto one is next to impossible. Non-functional is going to have issues in school that cause them to be home or in the nurses office a lot. Non-functional are very familiar with all their local hospitals and are in the back of an ambulance enough times to be referred to as a frequent flyer. A lot of non-functional suffer from alcohol and/or substance abuse problems. Non-functional are taking certain medications and usually are not compliant with them. We all know both types of people but unfortunately the non-functional group is increasing at an alarming rate. Right now depending on where you live 1 in 4 people could easily be non-functional. The number who are straddling the thin line between functional and non-functional is also increasing and those who find themselves barely holding on to functional are probably going to lose that battle.

@@tikaveilan Shame? Nope! What I did was point out a fact. There are two distinctive groups and like I said that doesn't mean the functional group has perfect lives but at the end of the day they can do things that allow them to be self sustainable like keep a job. At our current rate the number of people who are not capable of being functional will eventually overload the system.

I think it was more of a message to people who are too focused on work, working 24/7, and don't feel that they can take a break to work on their mental health because they fear the company will fall apart. It's like saying, they'll be fine without you for a little while. The company won't crumble.
@cezarypiatek2564
@cezarypiatek2564 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it's not. I've studied psychology and heard about a psychodramatic exercise, where you are enacting your own funeral. First of course, people are crying for you, your relatives are despairing and mourning, but it doesn't stay this way forever. As the funeral goes on, they start to switch to more down-to-earth topics, how they are doing with their lives etc, gradually turning the focus away from the deceased - you can observe it on any funeral if you observe carefully. A person impresonating the deadman realises then, that their death is eventually not the end of the world as they thought it's going to be. The life goes on and they have to accept it is and incorporate this knowledge into their psyche, often tormented by the inflated ego. When they accept this knowledge, a suicide doesn't seem so appealing anymore. Because it's only their personal world that ends, not the world itself nor anyone else's world. Not that big of a deal as they thought it's going to be. A reflection on one's own lack of importance in regard to the world and universe can actually be freeing. A mental issue is often a personal problem expanding to the size of a tragedy, because of the wrong assumptions of self and a perspective in which one can't really see beyond him or herself.

I'm in China and I can confirm, many people won't believe or say shady things about China hiding the number, little do they know in our culture how collective and organized we are and the sole reason this can be handled is with everyone's cooperation. Anyone who's curious can google how many people travelled during Labor Day break. But with that being said, people now have little consciousness about wearing PPE hopefully nobody will get caught off guard as it is still a global pandamic

I did not realize this was such an issue in China. Ever since the pandemic started I have felt like my life has gone from great to something that I could only have imagined in a dream. I dance everyday because I don’t know how to contain myself. I also walk about 11 kilometres everyday because I feel like I have so much energy. I am so lucky I know that. I have a great family that gives me everything I could ever dream of. I hope other people will find their way.

I would highly recommend anyone feeling stress, trauma, etc. look into mindfulness meditation. It’s not religious at all nor is unscientific. Sure, you can go very deep into spiritual waters but at it’s most basic, it’s essentially mental hygiene. We’re taught early on how to wash our hands, brush out teeth and bathe, but we are usually not taught how to clean up the subconscious rubbish that’s generated from stress or trauma. Meditation is like being able to clear the weeds out of your subconscious, or give your brain a rinse. If you have access, psychedelics like mushrooms are basically like rebooting your computer and clearing your desktop for the first time. Together they’ve not only been a lifeline during the pandemic, but I may have actually emerged mentally stronger.

Some background: when the female entrepreneur talks about liability of patients' suicides, well, many people hold health care professional accountable, should themselves or their families don't receive the medical result they want. In extreme cases angry patients knives the health providers. So if some patient died while seeking therapy, it'd be very dangerous for the therapist. And that's also why most hospitals have unarmed security...

I like what was said about the trauma from the cultural revolution and I want to add the one child policy being eliminated may be beneficial for enhanced listening skills with others and less isolation for individuals in the culture over time. The social and genetic trauma over an extended period, dealing with challenges in life alone, if two parents got sick one child would have twice as much stress and expense as a person with a sibling to help would. Even counseling, might be needed more by those who have fewer family members to talk to. When family members themselves are literally hidden for fear of such policies how does a person, then a family, then a whole generation begin to talk?
