The Second Jobs of WNBA All-Stars: Seimone Augustus in Russia

While the max salary in the WNBA tops out just under $110,000 a year, many female basketball stars spend their offseasons plying their trade overseas for double or triple that amount. Russia has become the top destination for talent, with billionaire owners willing to spend in order to build a winning franchise.
For players like Seimone Augustus, this adds up to a career with no offseason, spent trying to capitalize on a profession with an extremely limited shelf life. We traveled to Kursk, Russia to meet with the five-time WNBA All-Star as she wrapped up her season with Dynamo Kursk, just a few days before the start of her season with the Minnesota Lynx.

WNBA attendance was 1,574,078 in 2016-2017. On average, WNBA players make $71,635 while the maximum salary caps at $115,500 for veterans who've been in the league for at least six years. The attendance in the G League was 1,616,656 in 2017-2018. G League salaries are only now UP TO $35,000/year. The women are being paid much better than their male counterparts with comparable attendances with their respective leagues. The WNBA is comparable to the G League, not the NBA.

I think after this, the WNBA should open up in CHINA and RUSSIA and TURKEY, for FOOD and get out of the USA. You see these people HATE THE USA and they are getting a TASTE of what they lIKE. it's different because any of the European men who can make it to the NBA in the first place would already be making millions in Europe. And they could probably be the stars in Europe and make tons in sponsorship, which is probably a much better life than riding the bench in the NBA. Obviously, it's different for the legends like Dirk or Luka, but the fact is, none of the Europeans in the NBA are struggling to get by, whereas working a second job is a necessity for most WNBA players

They shouldn't even make 110k! It honestly shouldn't even be a thing. The NBA has been subsidizing the WNBA for YEARS. IT has never made money and never will, so the NBA pays money out of its pocket to let it survive. xHeRoHx I don't know what you have against women's bball, but I respectfully disagree. Either you are jealous that they're more athletic than you or you're a misogynist. These women shouldn't have to leave the country, miss important holidays, be away from family to make money. It doesn't matter if you don't like the way they play ball. They're better ballers than you. NBA players respect them, who are you to trash their game? Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean you have a say in their salary. Worry about your own paycheck instead of their own. Don't @ me.

Did you not read my comment? I'm speaking strictly from a business standpoint. If you can shoot the pill it don't take that many, shoot straight and pull that imaginary string, shoot for the back of the rim, then pull that string so the ball will fall about two inches short, sound like bottoms to me, but the three point shot is a lot of luck, keep the ball straight is the key, the goal don't move, it stays in one place, this works wonders for free throws, can you feel it. $$$$

There was a womens league prior to the WNBA(that ironically was killed because of the existence of the WNBA and the support of the NBA) that was in smaller cities and did well. Nothing's wrong with women wanting to play sports, I'm all for it. But its retarded when they complain about pay yet every single team is at a loss and the whole league only relies on the NBA to have them in existent. Would be funny to see them complain if NBA didn't subsidize the league and collapse. Thing is why watch a boring version of an exciting game where you have LeBron and Giannis and other players doing reverse dunks and windmills almost every game.

Not just the momentum died, the games are so slow paced even when they are playing on smaller arenas they look like it takes an eternity to go from one side to the other, some plays that can be blocked by the opossing team are not being blocked, they just stand there watching the other player do their plays, they fail free dunks even when they have the height to reach it with a tiny jump. Like one comment said above, is not like people hates women in sports, it's just that in the WNBA case they are so bad at it... Just look at the USA Soccer team, I'm not gonna say that they are better than their male counterpart, i mean the male team has to face a higher quality teams than the female team has to face in their league but they put a better show than the male team, the only 2 things that fucks up the salaries of the female team is that they work on an international audience basis, if the female soccer category is not popular around the rest of world then they're fucked, as well as the CBA they signed and then later complained about it being unfair (which is ridiculous, they signed it)

Here is a question then... why is no one fighting for the poor CFL players who make less on average then WNBA players as men playing professional football? Because the CFL doesn't generate as much money as the NFL is the answer. It has nothing to do with equality. The reason women get paid more in Russia has nothing to do with the way they get paid in the States. Straw man argument at its finest. Name 5 Russian born players in the NBA? Now if you can name 2 starting Russian born players in the NBA? Russia is a not a huge basketball country same with China yet has huge populations. Unlike the U.S. however both of these countries don't produce a competitive men's or women's basketball product on their own. Thus they pay a premium for foreign players. She says right off the bat that she can't play for that kind of money in countries like Turkey. No mention of other basketball countries in Europe that wont pay like Russia (like Spain, Croatia, Serbia, or France). Because those other markets produce top level talent on the mens side as well as just being much bigger basketball focused countries. Her reasoning is because its cold in Russia? There are beaches in all countries nice places to go everywhere. The fact is its solely due to the lack of domestic competition the women get paid better there. In NA there are a much wider array of talented basketball to watch before you get to the women's leagues. NBA, G League, NCAA, ice cubes 3 on 3 thing, hell even men's HS basketball. Unfortunately for the women they are ranked below all of those from a money making venture stand point. The WNBA Produces around 25 mil a season with most of that being subsidies from the NBA. Most of the Marketing for the WNBA has been done by the NBA. The NBA is heavily invested on the WNBA doing well yet people just don't care as much. Why? Well probably because the product lacks in what people want out of basketball. Like the CFL not capturing the American fan base 20 years ago. Its a good product but it needs to be an excellent product to compete. Honestly super easy fix instead of complaining about how much more the top athletes make in the sport tell women to start coming to games and supporting the league. Then they will see their money. Until that happens the WNBA is just what the CFL is to the NFL.

All the WNBA needs to do is change their marketing to focus on young girls. The WNBA is the only female professional team sport that gets some national TV time. So why doesn't every little girl 4-18 want to grow up and play basketball? They decided to take the LGBTQ route which will discourage heterosexual couples with little girls. And regardless of what the media will tell you, little aren't thinking about their sexuality, so they can't relate to the product that the WNBA puts out. Plus from an entertainment standpoint they need to shorten their court to the college size. Shorter court equals more points. More points mean more opportunities for exciting plays. Also how is the WNBA missing out of the social media real estate? Instagram was basically made for 13 year old girls. All their numbers were up last year so that's a plus but so far this season it's been pretty underwhelming for me at least. But hopefully they get somebody in their league front office who is closer to younger demographic and understands new media

your first point is fucking stupid and homophobic, if little girls don't care about sexuality then they wouldn't give a fuck about a league being LGBT friendly. And if you knew anything about Gen Z girls, then you would know that even straight ones give a lot of fucks about gay rights and being inclusive at a fairly young age now. Sexuality isn't a battle between straight and gay people, thats fucking ridiculous

They don't have to play overseas. They are making 100k for a seasonal job here in the USA and some choose to work overseas. But need is a pretty strong word for people that are well paid for only having to work a few months and are then free to work another job the rest of the year. NBA players don't have that freedom, they can't just play for another team in the offseason or work an additional job(depending). At least people in the WNBA get paid a LOT of money on a monthly basis and then have the majority of the year left to make even more money.

I appreciate that they have a professional league in the U.S. for these women, and always supported women's college hoops wherever I've lived. However, to all those in all these threads writing about how these ladies "deserve" to make more in the WBNA, I have this question: If you delivered a product that the public has determined is unappealing to the point where revenues would never cover expenses if it weren't for yearly subsidies, how much do you believe you would "deserve" to get paid?

You make a valid point. Most of these players spent 4 years in college. It's up to them to use education to market themselves. Going overseas to make money isn't their only alternative. When they do go to another country. It's imperative to learn the language. PC is another problem with the WNBA. Instead of hiring the best person to run the league. 'Diversity' is used. The league need to hire an astute person as Commissioner. One who knows how to market the sport. 'He' would put money in the player's pocket.

first, thats just the maximum, the average is $72,000. That means half the players are making less, with the minimum at just 35k. They are also giving up the years in which most people move up in companies. When they retire, they join the workforce 10 to 20 older than their peers, essentially being an entry-level employee. This money is supposed to off-set the dip they will have to get when they retire from sports. They also need to be compensation for a job that could cost them a lot in medical bills and end their careers if they land wrong just once....but obviously, they would make more if the league had the financials to do so
