I actually *was* a catfish before the term was a thing beyond a bottom-dwelling river fish. I was involved with a gaming group in the early 2000s and pretended to be someone else because I didn’t think my actual self was exciting enough. My fake life was actually pretty mundane but sounded more adult than my own then-teenage experience. I managed this double life for about 10 years- this was before even webcams were popular and Photoshop was only for serious art nerds (like me). I’d never be able to pull off what I did then now and I actually quit around the time when digital cameras started becoming commonplace. I saw the writing on the wall and knew I couldn’t fake much longer.

Nope, because if someone I never met asked me for money, they’d get no response… blocked and deleted. Also, the love-bombing is a turn off for me so the scam wouldn’t get far with me. My mom was a victim, but I caught on before she sent any money.

My father just refused to see that my mother had dementia, he wouldn't help her at all, and allowed her to wander about outside on her own in an extremely vulnerable condition. He refused all help from me, saying he could manage perfectly well alone, but I had to take over and get her into a place where she would be properly cared for by trained carers with the right equipment to help her. At one point he even complained that she hadn't cooked his favourite meal for him for a long time. It was always all about him, not my sick mother.

Yes I’m surprised a counselor/medical professional didn’t explain it. Dementia radically changes a person. My uncle’s girlfriend ended up with dementia, and it radically changed her. Before dementia, she was a nice lady who was crazy about my uncle. After dementia, one minute she was loving to my uncle, and the next minute, she would turn violent and repeatedly hit him.

I feel like there is more to his back story. Maybe her family took her away due to the dementia because he wasn’t taking care of her properly. He may seem like a nice guy on video but I am not buying his story.

I totally disagree that this has to do with age or online dating. I am 66, and I do online dating occasionally. At one point this guy that I was communicating with asked for 80.00 dollars after just two weeks of texting --- and my response was..."Do I have stupid written on my forehead? He immediately hung up the phone and never heard from him again, and of course he deleted his profile. So it has nothing to do with age or online dating...it is called being foolish. Ladies, if the guy it's too young and handsome...most likely it is a fake. Same thing applies for the Gentlemen. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true 98% of the time it is not. Everyone, stop giving your money away to scumbags...think about your future instead.

I guess the best places to meet people is to get involved in Church activities - (however that may resonate for you); join the gym; get out there; talk to people; get involved in community activities; such as volunteering with different events; etc., Do healthy activities and meet people. Never know. Even though the Internet is something we use daily, people willing to take advantage of us are everywhere! The victim is usually a middle-aged or older woman, but this was a good example that men are just as vulnerable as women. I don't know about this whole story. Perhaps the wife did have dementia, and perhaps it did lead her to becoming confused or forgetting things to where she would call the cops for some reason. However, the way he states it, is that just after 22 years, my wife called the cops and had me escorted out. That sounds and seems fishy. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but there is probably a backdrop of mistreatment or abuse in the relationship from one or both sides. Edit: In regards to my first point, the fact that he hasn't been in contact with his family for 20 years is pretty telling. For that family to still lend him money, they must be very good family, and he probably did something to lose their favor. The people in these stories are probably not the best kind of people. That is so sad. Man, these people are definitely not the brightest either. There are so many red flags... Do they really have the self-confidence that these rich and good-looking people will actually love them and move that fast with them lol? Come on, we are not living in fairy tales. It's either great self-confidence, or complete unfounded vanity. Also, all the websites these scammers are sending are made with simple HTML, CSS, and possibly Javascript. They are very amateur websites at best, and any poking around on the site would reveal as much. STOP BEING SO DESPERATE PEOPLE!
@SuperSPatrick

Firstly I the cops escorted HER out. NOT HIM. Secondly, the 20 years might have been because of the woman he was with. He was vulnerable yes, but he has come clean about everything he did and paid people back etc.

His partner had dementia, when my grandmother got dementia she became convinced her doctor and nurses were trying to murder her. Dementia changes your brain and can make you paranoid and fearful even of people you usually trust. He also said he paid his family back. Not cool to lie to them in the first place, but he is making it good. His didn't fall for some young hotty's pics like most of these vitims. DL photos are straight facing head shots. That photo would never be used for a driver's license. I love how the scammer always poses as someone financially stable but they immediately start asking for money. The reasons are always ridiculous. They need money for food, accomodations, clothes, plane tickets, phones. They 'can't access' their bank account for some reason. So why don't these people being scammed ask the scammers why their credit cards aren't working? I suppose they would say they were seized at the airport-which should never happen.

I have encountered many people who look like scammers on line and can tell the difference. First a genuine person asks you about something in your profile and shares information about themselves because they are curious to know you and want you to know them. They don't start with lovey dovey lines or emojis or romantic lines from the start. Beware those who act romantic fast without knowing you beyond your profile at all. Second a genuine person will never, ever, ever ask you for money. Why would you want to date someone who wants money all the time anyway, especially large amounts of money? I'm desperate to find love myself, but until I find that someone, I'm happy with my own company because I will never betray myself.
