Videolab - Tutorial 1 (The Basics)

Here’s a beginner’s tutorial on how to get going with creating your first interactive animations using Videolab and Unity. Videolab is created by Teenage Engineering as a tool for creating interactive visuals, controlled through the highly praised OP-Z portable synthesiser. But it works with any MIDI instrument or controller that can output MIDI notes, and/ or MIDI CC messages.

Yes 45 mins of Videolab goodness with Cuckoo✨🥳, its nice to see more interface walk-throughs, the whole animator/animator controller is always hard to wrap your head around, it definitely is the key to everything though once you get it goin!

Brilliant I don’t have OPZ or Unity, however, you are an inspiration I have an ipad and a copy of Le Photomatique. Your video supplied me with the drive to get the 2 talking and now I can link images and gifs to fire in time to music. Using your idea of a little man I will create some animations. Cheers

Yeah the new Photomatic in the late 2020 update is great! It’ll cover a lot of immediate needs. The whole Videolab though you can go to the next level.

If you want to create some really trippy effects start using shaders. Maybe even with Raymarching for 3D fractal effects

Dear Cuckoo, this is gold. Thanks for diving deep down into Unity for us 🙏 Would you recommend preparing animations beforehand (AE/PS/ProCreate) or is there a way to do animation in Unity itself?

🙏🏼 The animation keyframes things are pretty good in unity, although it’s easy to get lost at first. It depends on what you wanna do. For objects transitioning in real-time, animating in Unity is gonna give it that 60fps real-time feel. Also potentially take up less memory compared to a lot of prerendered animations, depending on the complexity and expression. Try a little bit of both and see what feels right.

You can’t actually draw in Unity though. So the assets need to be created outside of unity.

Do you have a touch monitor you're drawing on or is this just a touch pad/green screen effect? Either way I like the style!

Thanks. It’s a stylus input screen. Wacom Cintiq Pro 24. I deliberately got the one without touch input, cuz I know how much accidental inputs there’d be, especially in situations like this.

Hi, i got stuck at the part where you send midi signals from op-z to software. What mode should i have my op-z in to send the signal? Forgive me if my question is kinda dumb lol. Thx for this tutorial!

I’m kinda stuck on this part too. The OP-Z shows up in device management on my PC, but when looking at the console on unity, no input is detected.

Yeah it’s the same tool. Although they have created the actual 3D models with an external 3D modelling software. Not sure what they’re using, Cinema 4D perhaps? Blender is a high end free 3D modelling software option too.

A great 3d program which is free is Blender.. its open source and gets a caset alpint of uppsatsen per year.. its easily on par with Cinema 4d and Maya..

Yeah. It’s free. There’s paid versions too for bigger teams etc. But the free version is plenty.

Cintiq pro 24, I believe it’s called. From my late animation career. I’ve decided to cling on to it. Great for these sorts of videos, I’ve realised 😅
