Gabriel was influenced by an Apache Indian he met when he was on tour in the American midwest. This man worked at the motel where the band was staying for the night. He and Gabriel started talking, and he casually explained that his apartment building was on fire, and that he was worried about his cat. He had no way to get there, so Gabriel drove him. Gabriel was struck by how the man was only concerned for the cat (which was fine), not his material possessions. They spent most of the night talking, and the man explained the traditional Apache ritual he performed when he 14. Before he could be deemed a Brave, every boy goes with a Medicine Man into the mountains, where a rattlesnake is allowed to bite him. The Medicine Man leaves, and the boy must either find his way down the mountain or die. This story got Gabriel thinking about how many cultures had rituals where young men are forced to face death, which can teach courage and foster an appreciation for life.

Hi guys, Peter Gabriel is one of the first to use the Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument)... one of the first sampler/sequencer !!! Used a lot in this album. The early instrument seems to be a Chinese or Indonesian percussion used in two distinct patterns on the Fairlight and which creates this arpeggio. You absolutely must listen to "Lay your hands on me" from this same album for the sounds, the rhythms and mood. Peter's other albums are amazing too !!! Hello from France !! ;-)

Arguably PG's best album, although with "3" and "So" as competition it's debatable. His 80s and early 90s output is fire, not to mention his legacy with Genesis and numerous collaborations.

When I saw him perform this song live he did a couple really simple, but effective and cool things. First he had all the ceiling lights come to a point at his outstretched hand while his fist was closed and right after he sang “letting go of life” he opened up his hand and all the lights scattered around the theater. That looked really cool! Then after that ominous closing section after he finished singing “hold the line”, he would reflect a light beam into the audience using a handheld mirror and just move it around the crowd shining a bright light on everyone while those dark synth chords are playing in the background. You never know what ur gonna see at a Gabriel concert!

I still remember putting this on my turntable the very first time, as soon as I got home from the record store. Sat there and listened to the entire album about three times without any distractions. After listening to a Gabriel album, you felt like you knew how to be a better, stronger person. And his use of synths was so cutting edge that it's hard for people today to appreciate how innovative these felt when they were released.

One thing you can say about Peter Gabriel's work is that no two songs sound the same. Each track is it's own journey through emotion, fantasy or reflection. Stuff like Don't Give Up, Darkness, Biko, Red Rain or Family Snapshot show a decent range of his work.

Hey guys . Love the channel , very cool stuff you react too . This album and song is one of the first tracks to use sampling and looping in this way , Gabriel used a ground breaking instrument called the fairlight CMI . He sampled some African instruments and manipulated them using the fairlight. It Cost $25.000 Back in 1979/80 . A lot of hits of the time used this . I’m a producer from England who is into all this geek stuff . So I thought I’d shed some light on how it was put together , nice video guys

Deep cut guys - Bravo! That tinkling sound is a synthesizer played by Larry Fast who was Gabriel's keyboardist at the time Security (PG IV) was released. If you want to try another from that album, check out "Lay Your Hands On Me" or "Wallflower".

This is about a Native American Chief who feels that if he loses focus for a moment the world will fly apart. At any time...for the entirety of the world...if he loses focus it will doom mankind...even those who don't believe... He's growing weary. It's happening. Can you feel it? Our world ripping apart and flying into the void?

Hey guys ... since it's been a year since you listened to Peter Gabriel, maybe it's time to listen once more (?). There's another song off the same album which featured "The Rhythm of the Heat" and "San Jacinto." It was a hit single titled "Shock the Monkey." Has a very cool video to boot. I was also gonna recommend "Solsbury Hill," but I think one of you mentioned you already know that one.

Ye it's California ,the song is about, if i remenber well, about a Chaman-apache initiation, he has to put his hand in a bag full of dangerous serpents, when it bit his hand with its poison circulating in his body, the aspirant of chaman is abandoned in th desert and have to survived,....sorry for my poor inglish, cheers from Barcelona.

Most of the instrumentation in that intro, which continues throughout, comes from the Fairlight synthesizer, which has the ability to record sounds and make them into executable keys on the keyboard. New at the time

If you listen to PG’a Don’t Give Up or Games Without Frontiers, they’re a great way into the also brilliant Kate Bush, who is prominent on both tracks. Her more mainstream/better-known tracks include Running Up That Hill, Hounds of Love, Experiment IV, The Sensual World, Cloudbusting, Wuthering Heights (original and new vocal versions!), and This Woman’s Work. But if you investigate some of her earlier tracks, with similar experimental style to early 80s PG, such as this track, go straight for Breathing, which is chilling.

The story of cultural erasure is intertwined with a story he heard (not directly from an Apache, and it might not have been a real thing). Supposedly, a particular tribe inducted new medicine men by having an old one take them up a mountain with a rattlesnake in a bag. At the top, the young man (I think) took mescaline/peyote, then had to let himself get bitten by the snake, and then make his way back down by himself. It was a story Gabriel heard and affected him. The snake is the "rattle in the old man's sack" in the lyrics. What gets him back down the mountain (and keeps his culture alive) is "the line of strength that pulls me through the fear."

Ah peter gabriel so talented. He plays a lot of instruments. Probably not good to react to but you should check out his album from passion of the christ. For more popular songs he had some ground breaking video effects for the time in sledgehammer, big time and steam. I'm sure you guys have heard parts of some of those songs.

The percussion texture that runs through most of the song is inspired by Balinese Gamelan but I think PG actually stole/borrowed it from Steve Reich's Variations for Winds Strings & Keyboards (1979).
