Interesting fact: Gabriel used to open his live shows with this song. Him and his band would enter the stage from the back of the audience while synchronously banging drums while that eerie heartbeat sounding synth was playing. Such a powerful way to open up a show. Everything Peter Gabriel did musically, lyrically, and in live performances was so unpredictable. Such an exciting artist and one of the most down to earth kind hearted human beings out there too.

I saw him Nov. 82 in Maple Leaf Gardens. This is the album he was touring for, and the show started from behind me like you said. I was so surprised. When I turned to see where the drums were coming from, I accidentally passed a joint to a cop.

Gabriel wrote this song about psychologist Carl Jung's visit to Africa. He joined a group of drummers and dancers and became overwhelmed with fear. Gabriel learned about it from Jung's book Symbols And The Interpretation Of Dreams. Jung was studying the Collective Unconscious, and was afraid he would go mad as the drummers and dancers let the music control them. Gabriel tries to capture this feeling with the tribal drumbeats.

This song is a literal masterpiece. I’m a 90s baby and my dad had me listen to this album when I was like 7. This song is my jam, I use it to test my new stereo systems as an adult now. When I heard it for the first time as a kid I was an immediate major Peter Gabriel fan. I listened to this while playing Ocarina of Time on N64, the game hits different when ya got his music playing lol

I saw him in 84. I have been to pow wows where we beat big drums. He on the main floor had about 25 great drum for the crowd. I was on pure x and all were lifting the roof off. It was like dying and being reborn through love and its pain. Twenty thousand people dying and being reborn together at the same time in bliss. The audience beat the drums far longer than in the song refusing to stop. I lost my fear of death for the first time then and there. I was Twenty one and I had been freed. Thats a song

I saw the "Plays Live" tour in 1982 in Ottawa, for his fourth album. I had not known, before that show, that a Rock concert could be so meaningful, surprising and transformational, by virtue of the theatrical performance of a charismatic front man. I only wished that there existed decent quality sound video of that Winter show. I saw him again in Summer of '83 and it was a stripped-down version of the main tour. Quite disappointing, none of the magic on display. ---OronOfMontreal

Peter Gabriel is universally venerated as a musical innovator, as a brilliant composer, lyricist and producer. He is a legendary live performer whose eccentricities are appreciated even by millions of teeny-boppers, thanks to his giant-selling "So" album. The most respected musicians in the world want to work with him. He is in a small international group of social leaders called The Elders, which included Nelson Mandela until that good man's death. So I ask you, Nate: In what way or ways is Gabriel underrated? Who underrates him? Where is he underrated? I urge you to read the dictionary definition of this overused and grossly misused word, "underrated". For Peter Gabriel is almost anything But underrated.

Yes, Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel were in Genesis at the same time. Peter was one of the founders and they went through three different drummers before they hired Phil Collins. Collins was just the drummer back then, but after Gabriel left the band went through hundreds of audition tapes looking for a replacement. Ultimately, Collins said he thought he could do a better job than anyone they auditioned, so he asked if he could give it a go. As history tells us, he knocked it out of the park. Incidentally, Collins was playing drums on Gabriel's third album when he and the engineer stumbled upon the drum sound that would be made famous by 'In the Air Tonight.' Gabriel would get to use it first on his song 'Intruder.'

If you would consider to do a Genesis song, I would recommend Firth of Fifth from 1973 album Selling England by the Pound. Gabriel on vocals and Collins on drums. Collins was doing backing vocals until 1976 when they released the album A Trick Of The Tail. Gabriel left the band after the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tour in 1975. Tony Stratton Smith, a former manager for Genesis, once said that Phil Collins sounded more like Peter Gabriel than Peter Gabriel did... They do have similarity in their voices and sometimes it's really hard to hear who is singing,at least for newer listeners.

Great reaction, Fellas. Carl Jung (pronounced Yung) was studying a troop of African drummers and lost himself in the rhythm and sound of the drums to the point of hallucination, and he was very afraid of losing himself completely. That is why the ending is so powerful, it's PG's interpretation of getting utterly swept away and lost in the power of rhythm. Knowing this, go back and listen again and you might just feel that possibility of being lost in the rhythm. By the way, San Jacinto is actually pronounced, San Has-In-toe. Cheers!

Peter Gabriel is a unique musician and his work is often theatrical especially when he was the vocalist in Genesis! I recommend you go back and try some of his earlier works from the album Foxtrot. The song is Watcher of the Skies! Peter also played flute and was responsible for much of the songwriting during his time with the band. His solo work is sublime especially live! I have seen him on many occasions and he was always fantastic. All the best....

Brian Eno invented and popularized Ambient Music. One of his early such albums was actually titled, "Ambient Music", which became a series of collaboration records with other experimental musicians. "Discreet Music" is an amazing of his early Ambient-style albums. I find it a shame that Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno never collaborated on more than a song here or there. A co-produced Gabriel record would have been stunning, especially in the early 80s. ---OronOfMontreal

If you know Genesis, you must check out Peter Gabriel’s Genesis, because his flair for theatrics made that era of the band reeeeally special. You should probably start with The Musical Box, Firth of Fifth and, if you’re feeling brave enough for a 23-minute song, Genesis’ masterpiece: Supper’s Ready. They will blow your minds.

Jung believed that music and dance could create a heightened spiritual state that can make us feel disconnected, but also at one with the world. He called it 'numinosity." I think that is what the lyrics are trying to express.

Thanks for the reaction and yh Peter Gabriel was the singer of Genesis (Phil was there already). 'Supper's Ready' is 23(!) minutes long, a journey about love, war, death, dream lands, rebirth, unity 😎 A 'heavy' song of Genesis is 'The Knife'. 😎 'Carpet Crawlers' is amazing too 😎 Solo: 'Intruder' (amazing drums by Collins). 'Biko' about the killing of Stephen Biko or maybe 'Don't Give Up' with Kate Bush! A lot to explore lol

Phil was their third drummer, hired into Genesis in 1970, in time to record their third album. They hired Steve Hackett in the same time period, because founding guitarist and band leader Anthony Phillips had to quit, due to debilitating stage fright.

From what I get it has to do with Carl Jung going to Africa. He was at a tribal ceremony and was kind of wigged out but super excited about the ritual and the music but at the same time he was terrified. Almost as if he was first taking a new hallucinogenic. In the end he gives in and enjoys the experience. Yes they were members of Genesis at the same time.

This was recorded during an era when African music was first being merged in with pop and rock and folk etc. Gabriel and Paul Simon led that. And the rest of the feel is because Gabriel's shows are always highly theatrical. If you're going to watch Secret World stuff, watch it live. Even with a super pared down set, he's still very theatrical.
