I made this shield using pine wood which was from roof structure.
The planks are 8 mm thick, so whole shield is 16 mm thick. Shield diameter is 80,5 cm which is historically accurate although the measures varied from 75 - 90 cm.
I used metal thumbtacks to attach the eco leather around the rim.
The leather is sewed by my father :)
The cloth is actually my old bed sheets (linen)
The shield boss is a cheap dog bowl from stainless steel, I used hydrochloric acid to achieve aged look. The bowl was shaped by my neighbour Vittorio who is a metal worker.
And also thanks to my brother Andrea and his wife Barbara for helping with shield :)

Epic! I'm spending some time watching multiple videos on how to make a viking shield. Yours looks incredible. Even though I'm trying to make it look as authentic as possible so I might not wanna use screws.
@EpicWorkshop
@EpicWorkshop 7 жыл бұрын
+Forsaken Thank you bro 😎 😊 Yeah I used screws because it is on wall (most of his time) so it is not visible, I even planned to take off the handle but then friends cannot hold it when they visit and want to take picture with it😂😂😂 Moris
@Trailerglotzer
@Trailerglotzer 7 жыл бұрын
Haha well if it's just for decoration I can see your point. Well mine would be used for actual fighting... With dull weapons of course XD I gotta say your video is the first one where I see two layers of planks being used. It kind of makes sense to me, because you can have the planks of the two layers crossing each other, which would prevent a weapon cutting deeper into the shield because it hits right between two planks. Also it's the first video of you that I watched and you got a new subscriber XD
@EpicWorkshop
@EpicWorkshop 7 жыл бұрын
+Forsaken 😉 yeah, they actually used laminated shields correctly because of that: grain running in both ways which makes the shield much more resistant and durable to breaking, splitting... I don't use it for practice fight 😂😂 but I tested it, my friend was hitting it with an splitting axe (i was holding it) and it works but I would not like to be hit in shield boss region hahahah ✊ Welcome aboard bro 😎 Moris

+Theswaggeringwombat I would also like to have a real boss on there but I don't have place to forge (yet) but I tried to make my own but it didn't work out :( so I used dog bowl which looks amazing for 2 dollars and not 40 dollars for decent handmade shield boss. Thank you for your comment :) ~M~

Love it! Except for the shield boss. That should have been hammered out of sheet metal. To see the effort made of using planks to make the round, glue & canvas, wooden grip, and a fantastic paint job, only to turn a dog bowl and some screws into a boss and rivets. Regular nails would have made easier and more authentic rivets. The holes for the screws/rivets are too close to the edge of the wood for this shield to be effective long term.

I'm far from an expert, but putting the top layer of planks in the opposite direction of the bottom layer of planks seems like a really good idea. As I said, I'm far from an expert, but it just seems like it's more structurally sound that way, but I don't know.

I did some research and from some of the few remaining roten shields and some older scripts they are saying that most viking sheilds actually had a taper in around the center it could be almost an inch thick and around the edge it would be less then a quarter inch thick.
@EpicWorkshop
@EpicWorkshop 7 жыл бұрын

Awesome video! I'm currently in the process of making my own shield (using both your video and tips from colleagues of mine) and I was wondering; why did you use screws over nails for the boss?
@EpicWorkshop
@EpicWorkshop 7 жыл бұрын
+Stanovich That us great be sure to send me some pictures via Instagram when you make it 😊😄😍 I didn't have those nails with big heads, and also because of look, I liked idea of mushrooming the head of the brass screw to make it look like "hand made" to give it more man made look, I hope you understand 🤔 But If I ever make another one I will probably try to forge my own nails and shield boss 😄😎 Have a nice day bro 😊 Moris

Really EPIC build! I was wondering if you use any special foot attachments for your sewing machine when you were sewing the leather border, if so what kind of attatchment? Great video, you have made a subscriber this day.

+Collihan93 Thank you for kind comment bro 😊 😎 I used the pedal "for power" like in a car It is standard with newer sewing machines Btw my father was sewing

Did I see the steps correctly? 2 layers of the 8mm boards, laid cross ways, then cloth glued to boards and then background paint on the cloth? Why the cloth? To smooth the surface? And thanks for sharing, it looks amazing!
@EpicWorkshop
@EpicWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, all correct, it is easier to draw on cloth and it also gives a bit of strength to the shield 😉 Thank you Bro

Ok, it's a nice, decorative shield. But if you like to, it's not a very big step to make a shield that's a bit more "real" Viking. - a bit thinner wood - use rawhide for the rim - try forging a steel dome - use forged nails Ok, it must be a lot of fun making this.

I'm starting to make my own shield today. It'll be a bitlighter than yours. Diameter 80cm, Thickness of planks 6mm so it will be 12 mm. Hope it won't be too heavy for a fight^^

Good to hear!^^ How did you make the painting? Did you draw this impressive combination of fenrir and knots just by hand? Or did you make some templates? I suck at drawing so without templates I'd have a problem :D
@EpicWorkshop
@EpicWorkshop 6 жыл бұрын
+Forsaken I found a picture and redraw it on my shield 😉 enlarged it by hand, so no templates sorry Just try to do it and remember to step away from shield about 3 meters and look at it, because if you are close to it you will make a distorted picture 😉 Have fun and take your time! Moris
