I think, to be fair, that if the relationship had been between a man and a woman: everyone would have jumped to the conclusion that it was romantic. A lot of times, when people say "He meant it the same way as I love my brothers", and such, they wouldn't believe it if he were talking to a woman. Most wouldn't feel the need to quickly say "I'm sure they're not Really straight..." As my sister put it "I tell you I love you all the time... but I usually don't look at your lips first." If they're straight, more power to them. But I really don't think that's the relationship the actors were aiming for. Please note that I did not feel compelled to tell you you were trying to 'force straightness on everyone'.

No problem with that, but I think the problem today is that if men talk of loving each other it is always conflated with being gay. I mean I have a best friend who I love like my brother, who is like a brother to me, but I'm in no way sexually attracted to him. Which is as I've been told a rather important ingredient in being gay! ;) The funny thing is we've overanalyze this too much today and on the other hand think it's just binary, that those nuances in between friendship and a romantic relationship don't exist. You know nuances like Brotherhood, and the brotherly love. I mean the funniest moment was when a psychologist asked me if that friend of mine was ".....just a platonic friend, isn't he?" while when after he had moved to another city and I came to our favourite chinese place, one of the owner's asked me where my brother was! ;) :D Hell even my mother half-jokingly refers to him as her third child. And no we didn't know each other since Kindergarten.....so that depth of bond can happen with someone you meet in adulthood, just as happened with Ragnar and Athelstan.

I understand the feeling. My best friend is a young man who I consider to be my brother. The problem is, he's male and I'm born female. Every time I looked proud of him at school people told him that I was making 'bedroom eyes' at him. Ick. He's gay, I'm non binary, and neither of us is interested like that. Add to that that multiple people at my AND MY CHURCH made the assumption that my sister and I were incestuous lesbians. Yikes. I'm a naturally intimate person, and I've had my relationships questioned my whole life. I love intimate relationships that are completely non-sexual, and I think that the platonic love between two friends is one of the most beautiful things in the world. That said, I'm also a theater kid, and I don't think that straight-up 'platonic love' is what these two actors were portraying. I support their relationship either way and think that it's a really cool dynamic, but from the way the actors have acted in interviews, and the ways they interacted with their lines, I really think they were at least intentionally leaving the option open. To my mind the chief reason to look at this relationship and assume that it's platonic, is if you assume heterosexuality is the first, and natural option, and that assuming a homosexual interest between the characters would be a perversion of their relationship. While I love their relationship as a platonic brotherhood kind of thing, I think it's kind of sad that people act as though friends are 'straight until proven otherwise'. Almost like 'innocent until proven guilty'. As though being found gay is the same as being found guilty... Again, I totally respect where you're coming from, and I feel you. I just feel like 'brothers' might not be what the actors were aiming for, and that people would have been more ready to make the jump if the viking had rescued a nun instead of a monk.

While I wish it was too, I doubt it. George Blagden left the show to star in a new series Versailles. Scheduling conflicts made it necessary. I hope Mr. Blagden made a wise move because Athelstan will be sorely missed.
