I totally agree with you about telephoto lenses at places like that. There is a lovely ski resort near me and after my first few trips up there using a wide angle lens. I felt like I just came back with the same handful of shots, or variations of the same shots. Switching to a narrow lens helped me find so many new photos that I was really happy with. It forces you to stop thinking about the obvious major features of a scene and allows you to find new things you may have never noticed.

Your actual explanation of why you enjoy rural decay photography really resonated with me on a pretty strong level. There are a lot of very cool metaphors to apply to your logic within that space….without getting too deep. Glad to see you back and posting more frequently dude.

It was so nice to hear you get annoyed with a lens that lacks close focus ability! :) My first thought was, "He's back!!!!" I mean that not only as a KZfaqr, but it felt like you were emerging from some of the struggles you shared with us. I'm so happy for you. Professionally, thank you for this video! When I shot Sony, I briefly owned the Sigma 105mm f/1.4. I loved the images, but got tired of carrying a small bazooka on the end of my camera. I was hoping this Viltrox 75mm would provide similar images on an aps-c camera. Looking at your portraits, the 105 look appears to be there! Thanks for sealing the deal on what will be my next portrait lens! Hope you and Denae enjoyed your date night!

Thanks Andrew! I disproportionally use the long end of my 16-80mm, but it is so slow, with everything in focus. I’ve considered the 56 or 90, but this sounds like it would fit my needs better. I’ve been making photos for over 60 years now, and understand compression. But your description was one of the best I’ve heard for a beginner. Wonderful to see you both out together!

If you aren’t doing tons of night shots, or refuse to use a tripod, I guess, the 50-140 is awesome. The new 56mm is also awesome but obviously was less flexibility.

This is a great lens for portraits and landscapes, especially in low light. I have seen multiple videos of it performing well during model portraits. I love my Viltrox 13mm 1.4 lens. It's sharp and has great light sensitivity in all situations day and night. I just bought a XF100 400mm to add to my 16 80mm 18 55mm and the Viltrox 13mm. Instead of the 56mm 1.2 wr I may just try this lens. First and foremost I need to see how I handle the XF100 400 weight when carrying it around all day, or whether I will need to get the XF70 300 next. Nice video, and keep the videos coming.

Another wonderful video. I'm using this lens mainly for portraits and headshots, though, I will now start looking at using it for landscape and architectural shots. I really love your reasons for using it and am now curious about trying it out for myself for those purposes.

I'm glad you've started your channel again and I agree with you on a few things but one of the points you made about bokeh is so true. I think it is overdone at times. The one thing is if you are going to 100% Blur all of the background... Your composition and subject matter must be really really good or else it's going to highlight the averageness of a photo. Where is if you have a little bit of background and I say maybe a few feet behind you. It's a transition where the person is part of the environment, but they transition out of it that to me is the perfect amount of bokeh

At some point, I might move into the Fuji medium format system, but one body and one lens (because it would be used mostly for portrait). What do you think of the Fuji GFX 100s with the 110mm f2, or 80mm f1.7? Is the 63mm f2.8 any good? I can't afford any of it right now but might later this year for work reasons.

interesting focal length. not my "thing" though as a landscape shooter mainly - I've got the 50-140 to cover the rare occasions I might need 75mm, and don't really need the 1.2 (nice as it would be to have!)

If sharpness is your main criteria, get the 90. If low light ability is, get the 75

In the next video, if you own the 9pm f2, can you compare them? Specifically I’m interested in seeing how they isolates subjects. Like full body shots of humans but adjusting the distance between each shot so that the human is the same size within the frame in both shots. Did that make sense? Very interested in seeing that.

Fuji has two gaps in its prime range. A 70-ish-mm prime and perhaps a 135mm. I hope they’ll make them eventually! In the meantime I’m tempted by this as a natural pairing with my 35mm f/1.4!

If you get to a good vantage point, telephoto lenses can bring distant objects near, creating wonderful layers in your composition! they actually make for more interesting photographs than ultra-wide angles.

I like the AF / MF switch on the lens. I’ve used this arrangement on other systems so it works for me. But while the optical performance of this lens seems excellent, I don’t think it’s for me. Too big. I’ve added Fuji as my second system because of the small body and prime combination so I think I’m sticking to the Fuji f2 primes.

Same with me as well. I also use the f2 primes. I also have the TTArtisan primes for those times I want to have fun with faster primes on my Fujifilm system. I do like the AF/MF switch since one of my cameras is the X-H2s. The X-H2 line have a function button instead of the MCS switch.

@@Martin-nu6ym similar thinking to me. I also have the TTarisan triplet of lenses because I was intrigued to try them (and I’ve found them fun) but really they match my Fuji f2 prime focal lengths so nothing more than a curiosity. I’m using X-E1 and X-E4 bodies. The X-E1 of course is old and clunky AF but it has the MCS switch, the rear button layout is better and it’s simple shooting experience is fun. And there’s nothing wrong with the first X-Trans sensor. The point I was going to get to is that these very small rangefinder style bodies really are best paired with a modestly sized prime. Heavier and longer zoom lenses (I’ve got the XF18-55 and XF70-300) while working just fine, look and feel unbalanced and the shooting pleasure is diminished.

@@AndrewGoodCamera Sort of - not mass release yet, but Viltrox put 50 units for pre-order and shipping in their store (only will ship another units after the Chinese New Year), and I managed to grab one. Sent me a Chinese tracking code, 10 days without update, wrote to them, they sent me another one (a local tracking code this time, wrongly said as Italian...),still no updates again, albeit the code is recognized in the local carrier. Frustrating, but let's hope for the best.

Thank you Andrew for reviewing this lens. I have been watching your vlogs for some time, and I got into GFX (and urban decay) all because of you. :D So I had the Viltrox 75mm for a week or so and I did upgrade to the latest firmware while I had it. The 75mm (on X-H2S) shot beautifully and 'quick' (the firmware fixed the initial slowness)... until I pointed the lens up to the sky to shoot some clouds/airplane jet trails. That's when the Viltrox starts to hunt back and forth and seems to have difficulties deciding where/what to focus. I find this to be strange because it performed very well in 'down-to-earth' photography. ... Can you or anyone else who has the 75mmF1.2 confirm this?

I think that you underestimate how many people enjoy those "Americana" (your term) rural-type studies. You should play to your strengths and passions, and grow an audience of viewers who appreciate them. Just my humble opinion ;)
