I'm a Nikon shooter (Z 6) I think for me, the Yongnuo would edge it as I shoot mainly street and wildlife with the occasional portrait. So The weather sealing and light weight are important to me. Also, I would tend to be shooting between f2.8 and f8 so wide-open performance isn't as critical. But at that price, I may just get both the Yonnio and the Viltrox, it would still be cheaper than the Nikon 85 Z.

I watched all your 85mn videos and got myself the Sony 1.8 and frankly I couldn't be happier. It's so silent and quick to focus, it's performance at beast level. And Tom, I just love the funny bits you add here and there.

Frankly, the best lens testing I have ever seen. Comparing to others, your tests are just way more thorough and covered more actual scenes like real working scenarios rather than shoot in a certain given environment. Which is of course not the only merits of your vids. They are also very well organized esp. the final comparison part. I do have a wish though, would you please consider to compare more Yongnuo and Viltrox lenses? I have noticed that they have both released their 50/1.8 for Sony and yet full frame. I can see a good case been made comparing that to the similar priced Sony FE 50/1.8. Also the Yongnuo FE 35/2 seems to be interesting to test. Thanks in advance

I dropped my Viltrox from 5 ft onto a wooden floor. the UV filter shattered on impact yet the lens was not affected in the slightest...I love this lens!

I've got the Nikon Z50 and I am gonna buy the Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 STM II because I think it might be the right choice for what I do. And I don't need to mention that I am not a professionell photographer. ;-) 😀

Nice Video. I am a Nikon Z user (so don't shoot me), and in market for 85mm lens. Viltrox and Yongnuo were on my radar, but I am still undecided. I am just wondering if it is worth it just paying the extra $300 for Nikkor lens.

I've not been lucky enough to have a copy for a long enough for a long term test, but it seems quality control is a concern. But I guess that's always a risk for cheaper lenses. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Supposedly the Viltrox mk1 is optically identical to the mk2 (though I've personally never tested that) - the mk2 is just notably lighter, which is the main difference between the two. So in theory, the result should be identical.

@Tom Dalton: Is this a AE1 from Canon? This has been my very first camera and I still have got it- it still works but I don't use it any more. I have some Canon DSLR Cams but now I quite often take the Nikon Z50 with me because it is so light and small. Or my mobile (iPhone) but there you don't have a option for a different lense. :-D Good review by the way! Cheers!

We use a mixture of lenses, but it was likely shot with either a Sigma 35mm and/or 85mm. Either way, we use Sony A7III cameras.

These are both Sony E-Mount lenses, so they only fit Sony mirrorless cameras. For Canon 850D you'd need to look for Canon EF or EF-S mount lenses.

@@TomCalton not all the time though :-P there's nothing more boring than instagrams of photogs who're doing only pretty girls... you know, these days, even AI can generate these portraits just fine. but if you're doing mostly street, and one day you frind calls and says that he's got a friend and she want's to have a boudoir session... and then he sends you her pix and you're like : "wow!" :-P and you start to think frantically i you gonna pull it off 'cuz you've done it once before and if was darn hard (mostly 'cuz of bad shooting location and your below average flashes skills)...

Both are great, but going off the samples I've tested, the Tokina 85mm is much sharper and offers better image quality in general. Which is strange because they're essentially the same design. Tokina must have tweaked the Viltrox blueprints somehow because it's much better than the original Viltrox design.

You're welcome! In my opinion, the Tokina is the best budget 85mm on the market, closely followed by the Sony 85mm f/1.8 which comes with a few extra features (weather sealing, customisable button, etc)
