Nice video. What bothers me with Tokina FE lenses is that to get a firmware update you need to send the lens to Tokina. Viltrox released numerous firmware updates for their 85mm and I didn't see any for the Tokina. Also AF performance doesn't seem to be consistent with both lenses. For some reviewers it works flawlessly and some reviewers have AF issues.

The Tokina brand has been longstanding in the photography world. I owned the MT-X 85mm and it was a wonderful lens for the price. One of the smoothest focus rings, and amazing build quality!

I knew Tokina was gonna win! I bought my first Tokina around 25 years ago because it was so much less expensive than the Nikon zoom equivalent & still made fantastic images. It was *much larger* & *significantly heavier* which was a negative for a fair amount of folks. I, however, loved the look & the weight didn't bother me at all. I found it helped to keep the camera steady when shooting at longer focal lengths & slower shutter speeds (before IBIS). Viltrox has only been making lenses for a few years so even if the specs were pretty much equal on paper I knew Tokina would outperform. All that said, I like your videos & I'm glad you made this one 👍

One thing I missed during the autofocus comparisons, for Fuji the Viltrox comes with eye recognition focusing, is it also the case for the Tokina? I actually got the Viltrox last week and just happened to get an article recommended about these lenses which linked to your review! Good video too

Have you used the Tokina on the A7IV? Any freezing or lock up the camera? Seems like there's a compatibility issues within the firmware

Fantastic comparison of two great lenses

Did my own Test on these two (and the Sony/1.8) and came to similar results. Image quality of the Tokina is just slightly better. But I had two big problems with the Tokina: 1) It sometimes shut the camera down completely. Had to remove the lens and the battery to get it working again. 2) The aperture did not close properly, which caused very misshapen bokeh balls when stopped down. Both problems occured with two copies of the Tokina, so I sadly have to give up on the lens :( Did your Tokina(s) have any of these problems?

Just get the viltrox it has usb port and viltrox updates their firmware regularly and i mean regularly!

Either they did licensed the design, or the design's patent has already expired and is open for use. It doesn't matter much if the materials used are different or implementation is different. At the end of the day, it's just a matter of preference. Or cost. Which one is cheaper? Same with the ease of upgrading firmware or support.

The Tokina is great I used it but it's shape hurts my finger. The best 85mm but the one thing made it impossible to use for me :(

How is the Tokina compare to the Sony 85mm 1.8 ?

Maybe both of the two brands bought the same optical design from a third company. A former LAOWA optic engineer exposed that LAOWA designed the E 10-18mm F4 for Sony.

I am not sure who is cloning who here. I have used the Tokina branded lens during the film days of the 70's and later years. Tokina brand coexisted with the like of Sigma, Tamron, Vivitar, Soligor and others during the film era.

It could just be they use the same factory that doesn't brand the lens but sell with the name

In my county the viltrox is cheap, the tokina more expensive than the Sony.

With the Sony 85mm being almost half the size of the Tokina and with discounts here that lower its price where I live (Romania) to 435 euro (for BF and some other holidays).. just get the Sony lads.

Tokina should sue you for this review assumptions.
