I highly doubt Varg was referring to the devil in this song. His lyrics are typically either metaphysical, pagan, or philosophical in nature

I feel like the Burzum's music inspired the genre of suicidal black metal with the vocal style and the fuzz guitars and sombre guitar riffs.

Varg seems to be a pretty attentive and good father, he has 5 or 6 children. They are all home schooled in their home in a rural part of France.

Varg wrote these lyrics as a teenager. He has transcended your Abrahamic view of the world a long time ago and embraced a Pagan love of the earth and its roots.

Varg is not necessarily racist. But he has some questionable views on European heritage and the European people that by left wing people are explained as racist. Yet, when non white people are proud of their heritage and want to preserve it nobody cares. In fact its often encouraged by those same left wing people. Its a strange world with lots of double standards. Burzum means darkness and is a one man band though. But that has been said.

Early Burzum has some of the most terrifying, tormented, emotional vocals and some of the most beautiful melodies amidst the magnificent tremelo riffs. Great reaction Vin and Sori! I also recommend Burzum "Ea Lord of the Deep" or "Det Somen Gang Var".

That song, and alot of Burzum's music makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Its very rhythmic and brooding, but bubbling with life and mystery. Its important to understand that none of his music is racist, or at least I cant find a single lyric that would pass as racism. And even the anti-Christian sentiment is barely found in the music, its almost non-existant. "Lost Wisdom" is maybe the only example of calling out Christianity directly - as the song is about the Christian invasion of Pagan culture and how Christianity burned many Pagan writings and killed many Pagan priests in order to establish itself in Europe. Which is a historical truth mind you. Many of the songs focus on knowledge and about being, and even outside of the music Varg himself is very against the grain of what you would expect. He's proud of his heritage but labeled a racist. He follows his own path, so he is labeled an extremist. Burzum and Varg are both just very misunderstood. And it wouldn't surprise me if you were expecting the song to be without melody and overtly racist like others would want you to believe.

This song is about person who is almost to kill himself, but then instead decides to rise and march proudly through life, until he "one day" goes to "hell" which is Elysium. Elysium is old european pagan "heaven" and theres places named after it in France and Paris. Christians burned the idea of Elysium and made it to look like hell.

Love your reaction! :) To add up to the meaning behind the lyrics, Varg, the man behind burzum grew up in norway. One of the last European countries to convert to christianity (and through bloodshed alas) so varg has some spite towards what chriistianity did to his pagan homeland. Where pagan nature rites became sacraments for the devil, where healers became hexxing witches and so forth. Varg writes this song in the perspective of the pagan, who lost everything to chritianity and is now ostracised for his old beliefs. "I will open the gates to Hell one day" in this context sees "Hell" as the old ways that have been almost burnt out by christianity. He will relit that flame which has lead him and and "awaken" others like him who have forgotten. And another line which can be interpretated is "though I seek thy hell, you close the gates before me. Your life is right and so I must follow you to your paradise" is although he wants to continue to worship his gods, no one will let him because of the authoritarian church that will force him to believe in this foreign religion he is faced with. A lot of Black Metal bands have Tolkien as an influencer, Gorgoroth is a region near the black mountains (if memory serves) in Middle Earth, and Dimmu Borgir's Shagrath is loosely named for a minor orc character in the LoTR series. Enjoying someone's art doesn't necessarily mean you support their personal beliefs, but instead, can separate the art from the artist. For instance, I can't stand Christopher Titus' political views, and believe his views on firearms are 100% uneducated, but I'll still watch his stand-up and find it funny.

Vin, doesn't your religion teach you not to judge a person who you know a little to nothing about? The guy just believes in nature and the old gods. He believes in preserving his culture and tradition of the past and wants to pass it on to his children. I don't believe that's racist or evil but this day and age I guess it is. Watch his interviews if possible, great Christmas material, very true in his beliefs and an intellectual. Lots can be learnt from him even if you don't believe much of what he says. Funny guy as well, you would be very surprised.

Those suicide/death events base on things that happened in MATTON's and my own past. MATTON's father died by hanging himself & shortly after his mother died of cancer. Myself I lost all my former friends and dudes due to suicide. My pregnant girlfriend hanged herself and the only thing I could do was cutting the clothes-line she used for the suicide. Ten of my best friends and dudes followed in two years and this made me a complete drug-addict and nervous wreck. I spent lotsa energy getting back to the light but all these things still engage MATTON and myself and the very best thing about "talking" about this all is Bethlehem and it's possibility to channel negative and horrible experiences of a former life. That's why we dedicated "Dictius Te Necare" to all suicide victims, it shall be nothing but a bulwark against forgetfulness.

One of the best songs of Burzum. Its not just a song of course. Its like a journey. ONE DAY...

You need to check some of his later songs like "Jeg Faller" or "Glemselens Elv", the lyrics there are pretty understandable and his vocal style is totally different. The music itself is also really beautiful and hypnotizing.

This might be my favorite Burzum track, but it's hard to say, Det som Engang Var, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Lost Wisdom, Jesus Todd, Dunkelheit... uh so many other amazing tracks. I even like the prison keyboard albums, guy is super talented. Been trying to start a one man band myself for years, but struggle to grasp music the way he does. I got like 20 lyrics written for different shit, but making it happen is a whole different thing.

Just to clarify, Varg recorded all of his Burzum material on his own. He played and recorded all of the instruments himself.

It’s been a year or so since I dusted off a Burzum album. Yet the past 24 hours it’s all I have been listening to. Low and behold, what do I see when I open KZfaq tonight? Side note, Varg has explained in interviews that his music and all the church burnings that happened in this era weren’t about Satan or Satanism. It was certainly anti-Christianity, but that’s because Christians destroyed the Nordic culture and they wanted to reclaim it. An enlightening documentary I highly recommend is called Until The Light Takes Us.

Varg ís... Complicated. He's not necessarily a BAD guy. He just loves his family and heritage, he may not admit it (ever) but he's genuinely worried that his heritage will cease to exist one day due to Christian/Catholic beliefs becoming more and more widespread. He's not racist, he's separatist. Yeah, very thin line I know, but there is a line. He's never said one race is better than another in every way. He has, however, made mention of how white people are better suited for certain climates and how black people are better suited for others. I won't defend anything he's done, but you gotta try and see it from his perspective. He could've gone down a way darker road, but thankfully he didn't. Ya silly geese

I find this quite refreshing to hear from a different perspective than some black metal fan that would give a predictable response. I live in a very christian community and the people here would never even talk about much less, listen to any black metal tunes all the way through without turning the music off and getting all shitty.
