Your ending comments: "None of these paints are bad; they each have a purpose or style". Probably the best probably the best and most informative part of the review. That being said, Warcolours & Scale75 have been on my to-try list for a long time!

Thank you, I think on the internet, this discussion often devolves into "This is the best!" - "no, it's bad, this is the best" when in reality, both are the best for those painters and the real key is to just try lots of different paints and see what works with your preferred and comfortable painting style and gives you the look you want. That is the most important thing in the end I think, getting a result we are happy with for our minis. :)

You are so direct and concise. But you also go VERY detailed in your explanations of everything. And i am not speaking about this video specifically. I mean, on every video...i have learned so much. Even when i have already watched videos on the same things from other painters. I cannot thank you enough. And you will be the first person I mention when anyone asks about painting. I've got the whole P3 range and i can say that they are very good. They've got a very nice consistency, they take well to thinning, apply well when thinned and blend really easily. They do not use powdered pigment and as such all the paints are more translucent than other paints. This makes them very good for blending and making glazes. However they tend to become tacky and stay tacky for longer than other paint ranges this can have the unfortunate issue of peeling uncured paint off when blending quickly and causing globs of paint to get stuck in the bristles of your brush. The paint seems to take longer to dry fully but dose seem to dry more uniformly. This takes a bit of getting used to. I would describe the paint as gel like. This can make wet-blending slightly more difficult than i have experienced with GW paints. The pots are great, the seal is great and the liquid pigment also helps prevent paint clogging in the bottle.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
Good to know. I can't do pots, so that has kept me away, but I am sure they are good paints as I know many pros use them and achieve good effects, just haven't gotten to play with them (beyond the inks, which I love) myself.

I'm new here, so I apologize if my comments are repetitive. As a new painter, these videos are super helpful. I've been thinking of Vallejo for my first set of paint, but Warcolours looks great too. Because hobbies are about experimentation my shopping list isn't going all in on anything. My first 100 minis are in a bright cartoon style (Mechs vs Minions board game). My next 300 minis are in a grim graphic novel style (Darkest Dungeon Boaard game). To achieve the look I'm gonna try out the following: -A large set of Vallejo paints to use as my foundation -A few Warcolours for experimenting -A few Scale 75 Inks, as I wanted inks anyway to enhance the inky comic look Might go with an airbrush even for just Zenithal highlighting.

This is a great video. My cousin got me started in painting minis and has consistently pushed me towards GW/Citadel paints (I think because he used to work for GW) and any time I mentioned using something else, he's argued against it. So it's great to see somebody of higher caliber than he, say "No! Use other company's paints. It's ok. Find what works for you." I bought the basic set from Vallejo but never really invested time in using them because I've always been told "GW paints are better." but now I think I'll start branching out and seeing what I like more. I need to send him this video so he can see there's options out there. :) Thanx again.

I actually find Army Painter's metallics really solid, or at least the silvers. The colours and consistency are so similar to the old GW metals that I suspect they're the same formula. Miles ahead of the newer GW metals, which have mostly garbage coverage and consistency (except for some of the newer ones like Retributor Armour, which apparently use more pigment). Scale75 and Vallejo have the best metals by far though.

This has been the most comprehensive guide I've come across on miniature specific paints and their purposes, but I may be biased because I love your work and what you do. THANK YOU! I'm a sucker for a variety of color and my local game shops are fairly well stocked in vallejo and GW paints, so of course they've been my go-to's as I've been getting into the hobby. I've recently become frustrated with the limitations of the aforementioned paints, especially now that I'm dabbling in higher intensity colors and glazes, but they are great for my nooby painter friends when they come over and throw together quick DND models. You've offered a lot of insight on where I want to take my collection next, especially as I try my hand at new and different techniques, which of course are guided by your other tutorials haha. P.S. The music was a LOT louder than you

Great Video! For me the best paints depends on your current level. if you are a beginner I would recommend using the paints from the models that you are painting. This is because they usually have a paint / color guide, which you hinted at in your review on the GW range. Once you are a little seasoned you can then break out more, experiment, find the paint brand / range an color that you like the best. Questions: 1. Do you transfer your GW paint pods to droppers? (I am thinking about doing it) 2. do you add an agitator to your paints? (I put in a mettle BB made for nail polish in all mine,)
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 жыл бұрын
Excellent advice and something more experienced often overlook. The fact that newer people have no real idea how to deal with all this paint and can be overwhelmed is worth remembering. Answering your questions. 1) Yes, absolutely, those pots are the devil. 2) Yes, I am not sure about the BB - you generally want to avoid anything that can oxidize (I don't know the material they are made of). If it can rust or oxidize, it will ruin the paint. I do add agitators, I use one of two things. Either i cut up old pewter miniatures into chunks or I use the resin agitators from Warcolours. In either case, they will do the job but won't poison the paint.

Thank you very much, glad I was able to help. They are great paints at a great cost. If you jump in on the range, make sure you include the basing opaques as well, as they have the better coverage, which can be important depending on how you prime or if you are using them as your primary paint from start to finish. If you run into other challenges along your hobby journey, just reach out, always happy to help.

GW Base colours are great as long as you accept you'll need 2 proper coats over a grey primer - sometimes a third - they flow really nicely and the results are consistently excellent. If they weren't so expensive per ml, they'd be very easy to recommend (and not just for beginners). But I wouldn't personally consider them with a black undercoat unless you really know what you're doing. It just becomes an exercise in pulling your hair out. Macragge/Calgar Blue over a grey primer are still the best looking Ultramarines I've ever painted though! Could never get my Vallejo ones to pop as easily. Red/Green based miniatures I tend to go down the Vallejo route. Plus black/grey casings and metal areas are always Vallejo.

The difference between Scale75 base colors and the game color, is the game color also has an agent in them that helps put a shell on the paint so it wont rub off so easy. Base color is designed for display miniatures, where the other is for play. Spraying a hard coat aka a matte finish over the model is not done in all countries, so that is why its built in to the game color paints. At least that was how it was explained to me, when I ran the American Scale Games and 75 a few years back. Warcolours are FANTASTIC, dare I say they put Scale to shame.. even though I still love my Scale paints. I have not tried the Darkstar yet, plan to now thanks to your review. There is a Metallic Paint that is made in San Antonio TX they only make metallic and they are fantastic, but the name escapes me at the moment.. I will update this when I figure it out. UPDATE: TURBO DORK, is an awesome paint line you must check out!

Holy comments! :) Upon your initial review of War Colours some time ago I went ahead and grabbed a few of his sets to try out. First and foremost his range of hues is beyond amazing! And not just extensive, they are an incredible quality of color across the entire range; they are a joy to simply have sitting on your paint table to look at. But they are not your average grab off the shelf and get stuck in with because of the gel medium. It almost paints with a gauche like quality at times; the coverage is definitely something to get used to. And they don’t necessarily play nicely with other brands because of the pigment binder/medium. I haven’t done a tremendous amount of experimenting with them as much as I should have, but am thinking they may respond better with straight medium as opposed to straight water. I’ve noticed too that if you let them sit on a wet pallet for a few days the paint seems to start to dissociate and breakdown. Have you tried the new inks yet? They are quite potent and definitely trend towards a glossy finish as opposed to the rest of the line with the reliable matte finish.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 жыл бұрын
I have played with them with medium, water and flow-improver and they have good response with all, though to differing ends depending on what you are trying to achieve. I have the inks and the new glaze line on the way, so I will do a formal review of them when I get a hold of them. You are right that they are definitely a different bag and feel almost more like a heavy body acrylic (though not as thick) than a normal miniature paint.

Tip for a future hobby cheats video and an addition to agitation of bottles. Vortex mixers, they are gods gift to painters, save wrists from long term damage and keep paints alive much longer (because regardless of what someone things, by hand they will NEVER mix a liquid as well as a vortex mixer will. Very interesting video; a lot of food for thought here. I tend more towards Vallejo (because it suits my style) but I'm also known to tell people to experiment and try things out rather than try to lock it down to one type/brand of paint exclusively. Its also interesting that the two cons you listed for Citadel are my main sticking points; they have some great colors, *love* the technical stuff, but I just don't like the higher cost for less paint and the design of the bottles. However I will still tell people who are interested to try them. I guess I've had good luck with Army Painter, but then to date I've only ordered 3 of their paints; Crystal Blue (because its an amazing shade of blue to me and will be used on at least some of my Stormcast miniatures), Necrotic Flesh and Weapon Bronze. The bronze paint has worked out pretty well for me, even with thinning and I just like the particular shade they went with more than the other options out there, but I also fully recognize that my experiences are not indicative of everyone's experiences, with any paint line. I mean, to go off topic just a little, I can't count the number of videos I've seen of people who just had horrible, hot messes with Fine Cast and the worst I've run into was one warped spear on Valkia the Bloodied; however, having seen those videos I also count myself *very* lucky. At the end of the day, this hobby is all about personal preference and the best way to figure out yours is to play around, experiment and don't be afraid to make mistakes because very rarely is anything permanently "ruined" when you're using products that can be stripped with a mild cleaner like Simple Green or Purple Power.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. I think too often the debate over paint lines devolve into shouting "Yay" and "Boo" at each other. In the end, I think you are exactly correct, experiment, test things, and figure out what paints (just like other tools) fit your style the best.

Here it is: I can essentially pick 1-2 (if I subsidize it slightly) of the Warcolour bundle packages for Christmas. I find I like the bright rich Warcolours you use (quite regularly) but gun to your head, which set would be your one and two respectively (outside of the big boy sets)

Damn you Vincent R Venturella! This is such a great video because it sets the lines against each other so you can suggest better or worse for particular things rather than good vs bad which is never constructive. I've been thinking about Scale 75 for a long time and this video was enough to make me pull the trigger. But then you had to mention Warcolor. I'm just enjoying Warcolor so much, so my careful Scale 75 purchase went in the trash and I just impulse bought most of the Warcolor range. Oh well, who needs money.

It's highly overrated anyway. You will make more money in your life, but how can you value that against creating the art your soul wants to see made real? (was that smaltzy enough? Also for people reading this comment in the future, Vallejo model colour uses a different binding medium than game colour. This causes it to be very fragile to touch, so use a painters handle and varnish if it is going to be touched at any point in time. (I believe it is a polyvinyl rather than polyresin base, it does however self level a bit better in my experience)

Very nice video! I'll have a look at some of the other brands as well instead of only GW. Small hint, try using marine grade stainless steel nuts in the droplet bottles for shaking. Army Painter paints are fairly notorious for settling at the bottom of the tube and diving a weak colour. You really need a stainless ballbearing or nut in the tube to get a proper mix. Their colour match refers to their paints being matched to their spray undercoats (and not the Citadel range). They also have a fairly large range (think it's 140 colours) but most places don't stick their military range. Their inks never disappoint though their ink thinning medium improves an already good product. BTW I only have a few of their colours so I'm not a fanboy, though I'm planning on trying some Scale 75 products.

i do, every chance i get, i run a gaming group out of my house, many aren't so lucky, if you don't support your local stores, many have nowhere to play or meet new people, without those options, the less likely it is for the games you love to continue locally. also counting just myself and 2 others in the group, we have been informed by sony, walmart, target, ebay, face book, the VA and steam that our accounts "may" have been compromised and that hackers may have our social security numbers, bank accounts #'s and credit card #'s, everyone always says all you have to do is prove it wasn't you, which is sometime easier said then done, not only that, but it happens over and over again, it becomes a second full time job, much of the world has bent over backwards to do business in this manner, while providing no real protection and aren't being held accountable in any way, many don't even know they have been hacked for weeks, months or years after the fact and often only find out, from their customers or happen stance. for many people who are more tech savvy then me, this may not be a problem, but for me it's a very real concern. i may be overly cautious, but it's because i have had a front row seat to some truly ridiculous situations.

Excellent video! Thanks for giving each of these a fair shot. Lots of people tend to love one brand, and loath everything else. I pretty much use P3 paints that i transferred over to droppers and put in a glass bead as an agitator. I also use some Vallejo and Citadel paints. I'm not really partial to any one brand, its mostly that I paint alot of Hordes miniatures, and I like using the studio colors. But i'd really love to see what you think of P3 sometime. Mostly because I don't have alot of experience with other paints would be interested to see how you think they compare. Also they supposedly use "Liquid pigment" which i think is just using ink and medium, instead of powdered pigment.

I have used a few and found them fine (not my preferred given my painting style, but I certainly didn't find them deficient in any way) I know several excellent painters, such as Sam Lenz, use them quite often and anything good enough for him is good enough for me. I just didn't have enough of them or enough experience to confidently include them here as I only wanted to share what I was intimately familiar with. So my basic thoughts, if it's working for you, it's certainly fine to keep working, but pick up a few bottles here and there of other stuff that looks interesting and see if something surprises you. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I've been slowly starting to expand out a bit, picking up more and more Valejo paints, and returning to some of the Citadel paints i already had laying around. I've been interested in trying Scale 75 also because of all the hype. I just watched your review of Vallejo Metal Color paints, and think i'll try them out. I've always used Vallejo Model Air Silver as my go too and just tinted it with inks accordingly, but it sounds like Metal Color is worth a try. I still love my liquid metal golds though. Honestly i think they cover so well with one coat that i feel like that alone is worth it. Thanks for expanding my knowledge of paints. I just discovered your channel and am happily working my way through your videos.

Vallejo Metal Color is just so far beyond any other steel. It's like an F-15 compared to a WWII fighter. They both get airborne, but one wins every time. I agree on the Liquid Gold and it kills me. It's difficult to work with, but it's just got an unmatched sheen, like painting with Gold Flake.

Army Painter is kind of weird for me, where I live, per pot, they’re the same price as Vallejo and at that price it makes 0 sense to pick them over the best paints in Vallejo. But their 72 colour paint set is also the best beginner paint set for only like $120 in my opinion. It has pretty much every colour you would need for a very long time until you’re ready to upgrade. And I still believe their shades/tones are the best, they’re one of the few things I still use from Army Painter. Some of their colours though are hit and miss, like some are just god awful and unusable and then some are absolutely amazing like Mummy Robes and their Barbarian Flesh.

All of this should definitely be taken as my opinion and nothing more. You have to understand, I am a metal snob. Vallejo Metal Color is really unlke anything else and has no visible pigment even under serious magnification - it also blends like a dream and can even glaze, which is insane for metal (being opaque pigment). All that being said, those are the things I like and so it works for me. With regards to that gel medium, don't you find that the warcolours end up being a lot more transparent than advertised? So Vince, sorry to constantly bug you on all of your videos but your channel is my new favorite, and I'm kinda new to the hobby (returning from a long time). You convinced me to get an airbrush kit, I ordered it tonight, and now I really want to get some paints. Thanks so much for the in depth comparison by the way, and the one that really sticks out to me is the scale75 brand (although you say that it's not great for beginners). I'm just wondering if you have any tips for a newb on using them, other than what's mentioned in the tutorial? Should I just try it out, start with some watering down? I'm still getting all of my hobby stuff together, even a spot for doing it, right now I'm just using my computer desk to paint. I only have a few citadel paints, not even everything I need for the army I'm painting. I'm currently working on Slaanesh with some Khorne mortals waiting for me to get more paints. The Scale75 just seems like something that speaks to me, especially because I tend to hate citadel for not covering well. I also want to try the gel based white acrylic from WarColours, because I feel like I ruined a daemon prince and a few daemonettes trying to get them white-ish highlights.

Yes, my best advice is pick up some flow improver. You want to to have a way to get them moving when you need to. other than that, it's just experience and remember you can go much, MUCH thinner than you otherwise could with other paints. Also play with "Painting on the model" i.e. putting a heavy dab on and then smoothing it all out. It's a versatile paint with a learning curve, but it can do wondrous things.

Vallejo Metal Color (you would see when you watched ;) ) it's the only metal paint use for steel. Their gold range is far more limited, but if you don't want to go to Vallejo Liquid Gold (which is alcohol based and hard to work with), I would go with that as well.

I’ll be interested to see what your opinion is of the Army Painter Fanatic line when it releases. I got three bottles in a giveaway and I think they are a big improvement over the current Warpaint line.
