If anyone ever wanted to know why "the arcade crash" happened in the 80s, a big part of it was because there were way too many cabinets that didn't amount to much more than what you see here. You're a vehicle or soldier sprite on a scrolling screen and other vehicle or soldier sprites come in from a random direction, then you get shot, explode, and put in another quarter. Eventually people realized most of those games weren't really hiding any more than what you saw in the first 30 seconds, and gave up on all of them for a while. There have always been a steady stream of great arcade games, but there was definitely a shovel-ware period that drowned out some of the greatness and drove people away at the time.

Funny that Joel doesn't seem to realize Newgrounds was never exclusively Flash content. It's a forum, a music site, video site, and game site. The games use shit like Unity and HTML5 now, and I suppose this was pre-Newgrounds Player basically saving Flash content, but yeah no, Newgrounds isn't going to die just because Flash did.
