I enjoyed the video, especially the work at the top of the windmill. As a young man, I remember ranch hands that did service work without modern climbing gear. I climbed to the top once for the view when no adults were around, LOL.

Just pulled one of these out of the back forty. Fan was flat on its back on the ground, gear unit underground, the tower on it's side and a large tree had fallen and crushed it. Trees, roots, and brush growing through everything. My grandfather bought it on a dare over 40 years ago, had it flown in by helicopter. Pretty much destroyed now but I was impressed at the lack of rust. Took the cover off the gear unit and had a look, the oiling ring for the guide wheel shaft is the coolest thing, cooler than two ground hogs humping in a cooler at -40. BTW great video series.

That's awesome. It's pretty cool to see someone use an old piece of equipment for more than decoration or at least have plans to. I can't wait to see it once you get her rigged up to a tower.

You should design a bucket which you can place over your centre point and then fill it with oil to dampen the movement of the plumb bob. But you can also buy a laser plumb bob nowadays which you setup at the bottom and you centre the top target above the laser. Bright sunlight will actually cause problems.

Oh your so lucky! Love the Aermotor windmills, when I was a kid and lived in Ohio we had a farm with a classic two story farm house, red barn, white fence, and the same kind of windmill (same height) and color. It worked and pumped water, survived two tornadoes and is still standing tall and strong. I’ve always loved windmills, they’re so nice to watch in the wind.

Thank you for this video series. i went through this exact same process a few years back, same Aermoter model and all as a memorial to my Dad. Except for the crane to place the motor atop the tower I worked alone, including raising the tower. I was working without having ever seen the inside of a windmill motor before. What gives me affirmation is how uncannily similar your and my answers to the problems were. You communicate well and your series will help others who come after us; they'll need it. I am an old man and I thought I had heard all the sayings there are. Nevertheless, "two rats in a wool sock," was new to me and I thank you for it.

We put handles on our hoods when we rebuild them. It makes it pretty easy to remove and you can hook it to your belt when you take it off.

Jim, I download all of your and keith ruckers videos to my laptop for the flights i take once a month to Germany. I loved this series on the windmill as it brought back memories of my teens. We had one of these and once a month i got to ride up in a bosun chair to check it out only to find out years later that the pump had quit years earlier. grandpa thought i liked it . thanks for the vodeos and for keeping old Americana running.carl

The towers not very tall! Well until you actually climb one of these your perspective changes. Father owned large communications company so put up many towers guyed and self supporting. Could never go above about 200 ft. till I froze in place! Job: hang a set of brackets at 280' on 340 foot tower. No way! Got a professional climber and they literally danced on top of that thing. I tried 4 times to climb it and failed. I know what you were feeling up there Jim. Have the same windmill and similar tower to put up here in Oregon so this series was invaluable. Thank you for filming it, and great job too!

I would have made hinges for the two legs that were touching the ground before it was raised. That way, you could have calculated and measured exactly where to position the tower before it left the ground. All you had to do then, would be to anchor the other two legs. Thanks for the video. Im about to embark on this project myself.

I am so happy windmills are making a comeback I have a tri leg tower and an Ideal Stover windmill but the wheel crashed during hurricane hugo. It is more of a relic now and trees are all around it now..

Jim, Great job in raising the Windmill. A few years back I helped raise a 100' tower (Ham Radio) We did a operation almost like the way you did it. (BTW, in my prime I put up about 50 towers around the Dallas area.)

Ok I guess that's it for now, The first video I actually watched was from yesterday watching you talk about adding screws to the roof, and preparing for the hurricane by adding straps in a triangle pattern. Then I got distracted with this video. I might have see one of two of your videos because I seem to remember that you are a Lincoln welder guy and your shop is awesome. You probably should put a lightening rod on top of the tower so that the vanes on the turbine aren't hit and damaged. The high water table makes things interesting when setting foundatios around your place. I'm a trained structural engineer so I'm tempted to ante in my two cents worth but I'll just bite my tongue. You got it up basically straight and no one was hurt so good job. The proof is in the pudding. Make sure that you secure the services of a good engineer to help with the design and construction of the water tower. Living in hurricane country with very soft, water saturated soil make it a challenge to build a tower with a heavy load of water on top.

Back in the 70s I worked at a machine shop kind of like yours and we worked on a windmill where the big. Gears stood about 5 feet tall and had Oak for bearings and it didn't run that bad for the early 1900

A heavier plum-bob, thinner braided line (also doesn't rotate/roll the line) and a bucket partially filled with water stabilizes a plum-bob in winds.

A heavier weight helps mitigate the wind. I've got one made from 3" round bar about 16" long. Works great for these big jobs. I hang it with paracord.

Just a note about raising towers, you are ok because of the wide base, but for anything with a small base the side (handheld) lines would be better being attached to stakes in the ground. Imagine you are raising a pole mast, the side lines should come to a point on the ground to each side of the bottom of the mast, as it's all laid on the ground it should look like a triangle with the mast in the middle. The side lines go through loops or pulleys in the stakes, wrap the line around once so you have a braking system. then there's little chance of the mast going sideways dragging a person with it. I've raised several antenna masts this way without incident.

Seems to me that the pump would be relatively easy to fabricate since it's built on the same principle as a hand tire pump, or a hand water pump (i.e. flap valves). You're hardest decisions would be bore, stroke (determined by the ability of the windmill to drive it). And depth of the unit. Since your water table is so close that last would not be that much of a problem. What will you be using the water for? Great set of vids! I love windmills! Years ago I tried to figure out how I could stuff one in my baggage on the way home from Texas. My wife wasn't very supportive. Heh.

Hey Jim, liked the entire windmill restoration video series. Couple of questions about the gin pole. What was the length of the gin pole? How did you attach the gin pole to the windmill tower base? Any other help about the gin pole would be greatly appreciated.

just curious.. if have built your water tower yet.. and if you added copper tubing taps so you could easily take samples from various layers of water.. so you might be able to check the bacteria level. could also have a very small copper tube or nylon tube inside a copper tube to allow you to add a tiny bit of chlorine from the ground to keep the water sanitary. might also need to have an air fitting on one of the lower drains to allow compressed air to stir your water.

Our family business is drilling & repairing water wells since 1966,I bet I have lower,raised and or installed a 100 or more mills & towers in my lifetime. If you might need any info or help with parts just ask maybe I can help. We had a 3 legged Aermotor Windmill where I grew up quite a few of them around my area still. What size well is that Jim, and what is the water table? I will have to look through my surplus but, last time I did look. I had a 3" Aermotor rod pump with a new set of leathers, and a new foot valve.

You went to a lot of trouble to plumb that thing. I am using screw type scissor jacks from trucks at each corner. So much faster.
