Vintage Baby Gaggia espresso machine restoration

Restoration of a non working baby gaggia from the 70's. Main issue was scale buildup throughout the years which blocked all the water pipes and pump and also seized bolts on the boiler which were a pain to remove.

My mother brought one over to America when she emigrated from Italy over 30 years ago, with the matching orange grinder. It worked like a horse until last year! Brought it into work and we fixed it up - mainly some wire cleanup, general cleanup, and replacing the toasted gaskets on the boiler and the steamer which were leaking heavily. As a note with this machine - it's like a car - meaning, it likes to be run often. Sitting isn't good for it, and can make the first cup of coffee you make taste strange. Also, make sure you ALWAYS use distilled water. This will help prevent scale buildup from the water. Cheers!

Hi, What size o-ring did you use for the boiler? And did you apply a sealant when installing?

excellent job, I'm having trouble because after I've opened the boiler and cleaned it, I realize that if I push air or water from the long pipe in the part underneath the boiler, it doesn't come out from underneath (where the shower is) you had this problem ? Can you confirm that the water should pass through there? thanks Paolo

Hey Luke, I came across a similar machine do you know which seal kit works for it. I am trying to make sure I can get a full seal kit before committing to buying it.

Quick question: when you removed the screw in order to remove the shower screen, did you turn it clockwise or counterclockwise? I have the same machine, but I can't get the screw open. Maybe I was trying in the wrong direction.... It looks like you were turning it clockwise in the video, or is the video mirrored?

Nice! What was the tool you used for getting the seized bolts off the boiler? Circular saw blade?

It's a dremel tool with very thin cutting discs, however I recommend drilling out the bolts not cutting them like I did as it's much cleaner

Hi we also have the same machine that was sitting around not used in years, have you tried the steam side of it? I have noticed it heats up the water fine but when you change to steam it seems to be lacking. Does yours heat it up to a higher temp when you switch to steam?

Hey, the steamer works great unfortunately I did not add it to the video. When switching to steamer mode it takes a bit longer to heat up to the required temp but it works. Since these are very old machines they will most probably be full of scale and that makes it lose pressure or completely block it so also make sure that it is clean inside

@@lukepullicino4518 Thanks If at all possible could you do a video on the steamer bit? the machine was my dads so it would be amazing to get it running again. Just never seen it switch to a higher temp or I am using it wrong. Yes their was more scale in it than machine i was surprised

Hi I just came across the machine again I had put it to one side could you show the change over from water to steam in a video oneday when you have time I know it was 3 years ago we last spoke about this. Do you still have the machine?

Hey, the machine was made around the late 1970's and it used to belong to my grandfather(I believe he bought it from Sicily during the time)

@@goranberic5020 imam.u istoj sam situaciji, tj. zelim napraviti manji servis ( vjerojatno zamjena brtvi i ciscenje pumpe za vodu i spremnika ) , obzirom je stajala neupotrebljavana posljednjih cca 10 god. Moja je kompletna..meni je jedini problem sav taj silni alat, tj. to je jedino shto me prijechi da ju rastavim , ocistim, i probam hoce li raditi . i kako....nesto alata imam , alii dalje si mislim da bi me izasla " skuplja pita neg tepsija" ( imbuse,kacavide-srafcigere,klijesta, busilica i aku-odvijac.imam cak i brusilicu,ali nije ova kutna vech oscilirajuca - vise za fino i poliranje.. ) dok nabavim sve sto je potrebno za ovakav projektic. ....a Vi - koliko je stara vasa Gaggia,i u kakvom je stanju ?

Very very very nice job! Can I give you an advice? The coffee must be more fine grinder and the are a problem with vapor gasket! 😊

Thanks for the tip, you are right however I didn't have any fine ground coffee or grinder at the time and I just want to test the machine. Also yeah the steamer gasket was leaking as I forgot to replace it :(

Is this machine worth it? How does it compare to Gaggia Classic Pro?

Depends on what deal you are getting. Don't forget this machine is from the 70's so for me it's more like a collectable. I would go for Gaggia Classic Pro for daily use apart from being more modern.

The original is built like a tank. The housing and base are cast metal (so smooth it looks like plastic) and all recent versions are sheet metal. I got one used and make lattes almost every morning and afternoon. I have not changed any parts, only have had to remove the solenoid valve when it gets blocked by scale. I am amazed that this thing still works.
