My father gave me his Pro Mac 610 back in 2005 that he used in the 80s in upstate NY on our farm when I was a kid. It still runs great, I have always loved the look and sound of it. It makes me think of my dad and I working together, he would cut the wood, and I would pick up the pieces and stack them in the wood trailer behind the old tractor. I have all the manuals, parts, owner and service manuals for this series. In 2006, I got one of these used saws on eBay for $50.00. Sold as is, not running but has good compression. I replaced the spark plug and it fired right up. I kept finding these saw for dirt cheap on eBay so I learned how to repair them, which isn't that hard. When I moved from New Mexico back up to upstate New York in 2020, you should have seen the look on the faces of the movers of the Atlas moving company when they were in my shop looking up at 13 McCulloch Pro Mac 610s on the shelf, then the vintage 10-10, 200 and 250, Model 15, Mini-Mac, Homelite XL Automatic, Poulan Pro 4218a, and two chinese chainsaws (58cc and 62cc, one orange and the other yellow. That's when I thought to myself...."What the hell is the matter with me???" LOL Thanks for the video!!

Well there is nothing wrong with you. You have discovered that it is best to be prepared, so you have a saw for every reason, every season, and some back up,s just in case. You have also become a lot smarter than most as you have taken the time to learn how to repair them ,as well as the great memories of working with your dad.

..Torque, man, torque!..slower RPM's, but way more grunt than a newer high-RPM saw, especially in a similar displacement situation...I love it, an older guy(I'm 55 myself) that say's your a weenie if you complain about the weight!.. :)..I'm a long-time chainsaw mechanic, but have pretty much retired from it because I have had enough of the modern autotune, m-tronic, strato saws, etc. with finicky electronics, extra wires, complicated intake systems, and extra crap crammed in there that make them difficult and time-consuming to work on...I get guys all the time, who keep wanting a lighter and lighter saw(but want the same durability and power, of course)...often, the older the guys are, the lighter they want their saws..well, I hate to say it, but when you start complaining that a 10-pound saw is too heavy, maybe you're getting to the point where it's no longer safe for you to run a chainsaw?....

I have found that a cutting speed of between 8 to9 grand is perfect for me, as I can cut a lot of wood without having to sharpen and adjust the chain for quite a while. The new saws I have had that run so fast, always required constant attention to the chain. All the pro cutters around here wont use the stupid-tune saws, and have to have a lot of saws on hand when doing a job, as the saws just have too many inconsistencies , and are not reliable. I find a heavier saw actually helps my cutting, as I dont have to lean on it, like a light saw, to keep it cutting quickly.

So I decided to get new bars for my 610, and Montgomery Ward. Then both coils failed in a week. Back to the '87' Jonsered, but she now tinkles fuel when full! Ah well, winter is here, no cut'in icicles for me ! I must say you do a fine grind to the chains. THANKS MUCH

before you condemn the coils, disconnect the ignition switces and re-check for spark. I have never suffered a coil failure on any of my Mac,s but the ignition switches are a different story..On your Jonsereds, you probably just need the duck bill valve in the fuel cap. Easy fix and about $6. Thanks for the compliment on my chain filing. I did a video about how I sharpen my chains a while back, and if you havent seen it take a look. Thanks for watching.

OK, you've got me! The 650 is on my wish list now! 🙂 I'm a 10-Series / Super Pro guy so far. Very interesting information about the factory porting of the 650! Here in Germany there are a few 600-Series saws on ebay from time to time. Most of the times around $70 to $100. The are no real beauties in my eyes, but let's see how it feels having one of them in the woods. It sounds to me, that they did some very interesting improvements in comparison to the PM 10-10 for example, with the anti-vibration and adjustable carb and oiler from the outside. I have a PM 300 which is crap to me and I always thought that the 610 and 650 play in the same league, but you made me curious now. Let's see! 🙂 Thank you for your informative videos! Kind regards!

Hey ! Nice one...and like you humor or the frases..." common like dirt but rear as heck " he he. I have a 610 and so positive to hear all this positive about exactely the saw i bought on trip home...witj out knowing much about it. Those might be the most produced volum saw...but one told me that S-10 Stihl was the biggest in the volum on planet ever... I hear you say Homelite is it...? 12 is good number second with not so big margines. ANYWAY....the saw ...the 610...it is rear i will say here in Norway...to be bought and found...so I very happy owner. Yes...it started right away...but waiting for a fresh chain...as it was very dull. Of course make clip/ film of it later on... Thx for informing us and sharing ! :-) Not many of you kind with this level of interesting insight !

Thank you for the nice comments. The McCulloch Pro mac 610 was the largest selling single model chainsaw in the US and the Homelite XL 12 was a close second. I I would bet that the Mac 610 was the largest selling saw ever, as Stihl was not a big company when McCulloch was the king, but it is just a guess.

Well this is the second time I’ve watched this video. Haha “recycled toilet paper”. That was good for a laugh. Just taking an interest in McCullochs lately. I ported a little plastic mac and It looks like it was in one of those broshures but under one of the many model names they used over the years. Mine is a PM425AV which is the same as the Mac 3200 3516 etc. Sticker on mine says made in Mexico but another one says made in Taiwan. They have that same boxy look to them. When I first layed my hands on one I thought what absolute junk and now it’s my main cheap bush saw. No drama from it just runs great and even better now that it’s ported. Does not leak a drop of oil and simple to work on. Smooth to run but plastic so you can’t drive over these with a tractor and get away with it lol. Another thing is it starts in 2 pulls. I will keep my eye out for a Pro mac 610 or 650. You can really here the difference in that 650. One thing about not buying anything new is that I won’t be able to say “ I got that 30 years ago”. Lol

I really enjoy your comments. The little plastic Mac's were not sold in the US I believe and have never seen one. Fun to experiment with Turd saws once in a while for a challenge. Most Mac's size for size in their heyday were better performers than most other saws, and were simple to maintain and repair. When you scrounge up some Mac's, you will be a happy camper!

My grandpa has a McCullouch 610 he used all the time when he used to heat his house with wood. Last time the saw was used was 1987. I wanted a bigger saw and am too cheap to buy a new one so I drug it out of the garage and dusted it off, put new gas in it, pulled it over about 8 times and it fired right up. Couldn’t believe it. Sitting 35 years and it runs like you just used it last weekend. They don’t make ‘‘em like that anymore

The Mac 610's and 650's were some of the most reliable saws ever made. Several of mine have been on the job for 42 years with no major repairs. All the saws I bought to replace them, Stihls and Husky's, all went to the scrap yard, as they just wore out rather quickly, and parts prices were too stupid to make it viable to repair them.

Also, heavy saws do not exhibit kickback tendencies, like light saws. My saws also have big dogs and I dig them in when cutting. I don’t think they will kickback, even if I do something stupid, but as a kid I learned to keep my eyes on the bar tip at all times.

Hopefully I will be finished with it this week. I have a spare ready to nearly ready to go. I just want to be certain you are getting a good saw that doesn't need repairs. I might get delayed again. It is very easy to adjust the oiler. Take off the air cleaner cover, and the oil pump will be visible. On the top of the pump is a screw. Turn the screw counter clockwise for more oil and the opposite direction for less oil. I would recommend on taking the bar and chain off to see how well the oiler is working when the saw is running.

@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156

The Mac Timber Bears were basically using up parts stocks and were assembled in the brand new factory in Mexico. Most parts suppliers had quit selling parts to McCulloch because of lack of payments, so the end was near. My new old stock Timber bear has to be one of the last of the saws built, as I have seen and worked on a lot of them, and mine is the only one I have seen with the brown starter cover. McCulloch had a bad habit of changing the graphics etc. , and coming up with fancy new names for the same old saws that had been in production for years, hoping that customers would think it is a new model and buy them. There seems to be a fair amount of the old Timber Bears around still, so they must have sold fairly well till no more parts were available, and the 610 series saws being as tough and reliable as they are, they have survived. Being sold dirt cheap like you say, people must have snapped them all up.

Timber Bears are the last of the McCulloch,s made, and are basically the same as the pro mac 610, except for the displacement. Timber Bear 54cc - 610 60cc. The recoil starters were cheapened up and have a tendency to fail, but used ones off parts 610,s are readily available, and dont break. Operators manual is the same for both saws, and should be easy to find. When I pay too much for something, I trick myself by saying, they make new money every day, but not the piece of junk I just got ! Works every time !

The displacement of the Timber Bear is 54cc,s The air filter is the same as a Pro Mac 610 and is readily available on EBAY.The sprocket is just a standard universal 7 pin, but you need to see if the chain is 3/8" pitch or .325. The bars are being sold on EBAY, but there arent a lot of 20" bars any more, but plenty of 18" and 16" bars. The Mac 605 is smaller in displacement than the 610, but I am not sure as to the correct displacement, as I have a couple of pieces of literature that gives different info. One source says 54cc, the other 58cc, so without being able to measure the bore on one, I dont know for sure.

I just bought a 1980 model 610. Is the handle supposed to be attached to that flat metal plate at the bottom? Mine isn't attached and I can't see any way for it to be. I bought the saw from someone on Facebook Marketplace. The guy brought me the saw and said he hadn't cranked it for a long time. I kid you not, I didn't even notice where the choke lever was and just turned on the ignition switch. I saw it already had gas in the tank and it started on the third pill with no choke. I turned and looked at him and said "I'll take it" .

I would suggest you watch one of my older videos (Vintage Chainsaws-Proper Oils And Mix Ratios) from about 2 years ago. Every old saw I use, gets a different ratio depending on the temperature, how hard I will be using the saw, and also the vintage of the saw. The video explains it all. The oil I use today is ECHO RED ARMOR, and have had excellent results.

..McCulloch, like you say, was having numerous problems at the end..but I think what really finished them off, is that they had no "modern" designs that would meet the new, more stringent, EPA standards..about the "3.7 Timber Bear"..I never understood why they decided to reduce the displacement on a saw that was already quite heavy even for a 60cc saw..I can't see how having the cylinder and piston made with a slightly smaller bore would have reduced their production costs..makes no sense to me...?..anyways, I love these old saws! :)
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 2 жыл бұрын
I think they were using up old stock's of parts on these saws, as it made no sense to build a smaller saw. The stock 610's are very good performers, so cutting the displacement was a stupid move. McCulluch had a production facility in Italy, and were producing totally modern designs, and imported a few models, but it was too little, too late. McCulloch quit innovating at least 20 years before they failed, and just putting fancy names on the old designs was just plain stupid.

Hi Ol' boy!!😀😀 I'm glad you love them old 610's. I've been a professional logger almost all my life and you couldn't make me use one of them to try to make a living with. I ran one for about a hour one time. I felt that they were the clumsyest most unbalanced chainsaw I ever ran in my life. A pro Mac 700 was one of my favorite Mac's I ever had. Also the pro Mac 1010 was a really great pulpwood saw. 3.5 pounds is a lot of weight if you are going to use it for 8 to 10 hours a day cutting wood. If you think extra weight makes it cut faster, then you need to do some work to your chain. Like sharpening it and adjusting your rakers to allow it to cut at full potential without ever pushing on it. I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just starting facts from my years of experience making a living cutting timber. I'm actually a Stihl chainsaw lover. I've never seen a Mac outlast my Stihl's unless they are both just sitting on a shelf and never used. LOL!! It's all about who is running them and taking care of them as to how long they will last. They all made good models and bad models. But Stihl was around long before Mac's and is still here long after the Mac's are gone. Take care my friend and stay safe and healthy!!😀😀 Logger Al

Due to your glowing review of the Mac 610, and 650,s I figure I should go out and buy another 5 or 6. Just kidding. You are 100% right about them not being a commercial saw. They were sold as a farm/home owner saw, and were very successfull, being the largest selling models of saw of any manufacturer. Also.It is interesting that some of the highest views on my channel are about these two saws and all the comments I have had on them ware all positive. Since I am not a pro, and dont use square cut chain for max performance, my saws cut very well. Check out my video on my Pro Mac 700. I just use round tooth, chisel bit chain-works for me.My experience with Stihl and Husky,s have been just the opposite of yours, mine failed dramaticly, and the parts were so expensive to fix them, I sold them for parts. Here in the Northwest, allmost all commercial saws are Husky,s, and the big dealers sell 10 Husky,s to every Stihl commercial saw. It all boils down to use what you like and works for your intended purpose. Mac failed because of lack of innovation in later years, leaving the commercial market, and bad management.Thanks for watching and your comments!

@@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 :) I don't disagree that your saws usually cut well. But you were the one that made the remark about using the weight of the saw to push it through. I bet you had to touch up a few teeth after you hit the wood holder during the demonstration. LOL!! Yep, I saw that!!

I usually dont put much pressure on the saw when cutting, as the saw will do most of the work. Ironhorse talked about his old Stihl in one of his videos, and said the extra weight of his old saw made it cut faster than the newer lighter one he replaced it with. What works best for one doesnt always work for another. You are the only one who saw me touch the chain on my holder, very observant. I need to be more careful. I just watched some DA calling himself a farmer that was trying to start a 610 that had not run in 30 years,and kept cutting it off when he got it running because the chain break was on. Worse yest he was working on it on his concrete front porch. I can only imagine how much paint was left on the sprocket cover because he had turned that side down on the rough concrete to work on it. He could have probably gotten it running if he had taken the chain break off. Millennials think they can rule the world and can’t even crank a chainsaw.

I can believe all of that. My grandfather farmed 2,500 acres in South Georgia and he rode it every day on a horse. He worked eight days a week. Now, these idiots ride around in expensive 4by 4 trucks and are in debt up to their noses. Grandpa had a 50 Chevy truck that had more rusted areas than paint. He farmed with four Ford tractors, two Jubilees, a Ford 540 and an A model Johnny. These guys, today, have tractors with more horsepower than all of his combined. Actually the mixture is spot on for the type of use that these saws get. The proof of this is that some of my Mac 610's have anywhere from 35 to 43 years of continuous use, have never been apart for repairs or carbon removal and perform like new. The oil I use in these saws does not build carbon. The modern saws that I used to have, all had catastrophic engine failures using the factory recommended oils and ratios. I would have to guess that you have no experience with the McCulloch saws.
