Vintage CorningWare was truly ahead of its time when it debuted in the 1950s, and remains remarkable to this day. Chef and food writer Matt Degen explains why you should still cook with vintage CorningWare made from Pyroceram.

I would not ever part with any of my old Corning Ware as long as I'm still cooking. All my Grab It bowls are in the dishwasher every day. I love the nice handle to safely transpirtt a hot bowl of soup to the table. It cleans up easily. If there is an old USA business that deserves to be revived, it's definitely Corning!

We got married in the 70's, and like most couples, we received a ton of Corning Ware as wedding presents, which we added to. In that it was the 1970's, ours was "The Spice of Life" design. My mother and my grandmother both had the "Blue Cornflower" design. When we built our first (and present) house in the early 1990s, we designed our new "modern" kitchen in shades of blue. One day, my mother visited us with her car trunk full of both (she had inherited her mother's), their collections of the "Blue Cornflower," and swapped out with me. I use several pieces of it every day. It still looks wonderful and is, as you stated, the best cookware ever!

Here is a fact you probably don't remember about your very OLD Mummie. In the 60's I worked at General Electric Major Appliance Division in Vernon, CA. For a time & as a special promotion, a 3-piece set of the very NEW, exciting Corning Ware was packaged in their ovens. To this day, I USE my set! In fact, the oval meat platter graced our table for a family dinner last Sunday!

I recently started using the Corningware that I grew up using. I was "holding it" for my mom who has aged and lost interest in cooking - which is no problem for me, I'm happy to use the pieces. They sold off PYREX too years ago to some Asian Company. That Company used local minerals in Asia to produce the glass and they would suddenly shatter, it turns out there's a Mineral here in America that they don't have in Asia and that mineral missing was what made PYREX what it was. Corning was so worried about the "bad image" that would be cast on the Corning Company, they bought back the PYREX license. Asian made is branded as Pyrex, the Corning brand is PYREX all capitol letters. Now as far as other products, I have a huge set of Corning Dishes, Bowls, Platters and they are UNBREAKABLE, they've also developed Gorilla Glass which is used for many things including Cell Phone Screens because it's unbreakable.

Here in Australia we still have the Corning Ware branded shops which sell a range of products including brand new Corning Ware items such as these "vintage items"- yes they are a bit more expensive but not too bad compared to the stoneware etc. You can even buy replacement lids separately etc. I shopped there only a few months ago. They had updated their recommendations decades ago that you never place a very cold item onto a hot stove or barbeque because it can explode, as has happened to many people. I also have some original pieces passed down from my mother and that she purchased and gave me as a wedding gift. I have more recently bought them to give as wedding gifts to others. And I often use mine in the microwave,

It is the classic three-piece casserole set, and I still have and use it today. It’s been a long time since you departed OCR, seems like yesterday! When I Googled your name this is how I found out about your KZfaq channel on cooking. My Mom always had Corning Ware in the kitchen, and for a time, I had Corelle plates, bowls, etc. They are practically indestructible as you elude to! I see that Corelle Ware and Corning Ware were sort of interchangeable in their descriptions. And YES, I have seen ALOT of vintage Corning and Corelle in Antique stores, very moderately priced. Some at bargain prices too!! Very easy to get a set going just by Antiquing, yard sales, eBay, Etsy, and thrift stores. @@IWantToCook My first "car" was a 1969 VW Van. Then we bought a Westphalia camper someone rolled and moved all the equipment over. Next, I bought my husband a 1974 VW Thing brand new. He wanted it - I didn't like it. Very rattly. I worked for a dealership that thought they'd sell like hotcakes. They didn't, so they put hardtops on them and I got it for $2550 brand new. Sold it years later with 160k miles on it for $2500. We also bought a 1960 VW pickup. I loved those pickups! It wasn't running. Dropped a van motor in it and upgraded from 6V to 12V. I believe those were never sold in the U.S. -- probably brought back from Germany by a G.I.

Using the VISION double boiler over direct flame gave me a good chuckle. I’m at a bit over a dozen pieces (VISION only) currently myself, not counting lids. :)

I have used my original Corning-made Corning Ware for over 60 years, and it is still my favorite! I use it every day! I received a few pieces as wedding gifts and bought more when my husband worked for Corning Glass 15 years later. Cook in it, and it looks nice on the table! It’s tough, but easy to clean. I wish Corning still made it. The knock-offs aren’t the same.

I'ma steal your t shirt!! 💙🤍 Also, I inherited my mom's CorningWare including her Cornflower Blue pieces from the early 60s plus the French vegetable ones from the late 70s. Now, anytime I go to a thrift store I buy whatever CorningWare I find. I wish I bought the dainty Iris print ones in the late 80s/early 90s. 😢

Oh yes, we are ALWAYS being spied on these days. Here's a funny one, by buddy at work was asking me about Cheese Cloth and if we had some here at work, I said yeah we have 100 ft rolls of it, that we use for straining out junk in liquids, so I said what do need it for? "He said I have Bee Hives and I want to gather and purify the Honey" so I gave him a yard or so of it, then awhile later I got a notice from Amazon on my Phone that my package was out for delivery (something I ordered a day or two earlier) as I pull out the phone and clicked on the Amazon app, there was "Items I might be interested in". and the Items were Bee Keepers Suits !!!!! So I made a Bee Line (see what I did there?) to my Buddy and showed him the Amazon App he was stunned as was I.

Oh, I've got one of those smaller white dishes with the blue flowers on the side. When we emigrated from the UK to Canada, my husband came first and he went to thrift stores to find stuff for the place he was renting before I and all the items in our home arrived. One of those was the dish. We came in 2006 and the dish is still going strong. I didn't realise what it was called, nor that it was so popular. I do put it in the oven and in the micro.

Corning glass products are amazing. I have some of the old Corning bake/cook ware, but I also really like the Corelle dishes, bowls, plates, etc. which seem to be made of the same amazing stuff. They are very light, don't break easily and take up less room in the cupboard. Good for the tiny house folks. I just added a few of the dinner bowls to my collection which are like a flat bowl/plate thing with sides that come up so you can eat sitting on the couch in front of the TV. These dishes are reasonably priced and easy to get online or at Walmart. Just a few years ago there was still a "Kitchen Connection" store in the local outlet mall that sold all kinds of Corning. I guess they are just so damn durable they killed themselves off.
