The Nokia 6110 & 5110 from 1998 were the first phones with the popular Snake game. These phones were highly capable devices with the first mobile ARM CPU. This was the start of Nokia's third generation of digital phones, DCT3. Many third party games and applications came out of the Nokia DCT3 modding scene in the 2000's. Using the original firmware tools, I set about flashing patched roms with new embedded games into these two Nokia phones.

I was writting patches, drivers and even elf's to my sony ericsson phones back in 2008-2011 but with android coming out and price being 300-700usd per phone and being afraid to brick expensive phone I was hesitant to learn modding on android and thus left it... drivers were like the name suggest mostly sound drivers to make phone's speaker output/headset/bluetooth output higher, patches were to eliminate limitations such as low volume message, disable operator logo so it would no longer be shown on the screen, disable limited message storage and many more, with other small tweaks such as replacing on/off animations and such... elf's were a small programs, which mostly let you do amazing things like taking a screenshot in a phone at the time when no feature phone (except early smartphones) had such function... and sometimes hardware mods such as installing LED's taken from other phone flashlight so that it would shine them at rythm of the music...

This is so awesome! Back in the day I used to modify DCT3 firmware files as well. One of my NokiX scripts was a "smart home" appliance. :) Nokia 3310 original batteries used to have a thermometer inside of them. So I created a little NokiX app that would respond to incoming SMS messages and reply back with the current temperature. Then I connected vibrator signal to a relay which was connected to the electric heater. This way I had remotely SMS operated electric heater. Probably not the safest of the implementations, but definitely the most fun one. :)

Wow, awesome video, what a flash back! I was spaceimpact33 on NokiaFREE forums and spent the better part of my teenage years learning to code by modding DCT-3’s. My best mod was porting a flash file system that that used the space between the MCU and PPM. Built some hooks that enabled storage of SMS messages on device instead is the SIM.

I'm pretty sure I had one of these as my first cellphone back in around 2000 when I was was probably 16. Telecom had a deal at my high school where you could trade in a Vodafone phone and like $50 to get a brand new Nokia and credit on the phone perhaps. The phones came in bright colours. It might have been a slightly different model, but similar. I recall there was a stubby antennae on them. I went down to cash converters and got a cheap worn out vodaphone phone for the deal. One boy got hold on an ancient bellsouth telephone which was a network here in New Zealand later bought out by Vodafone.

I have 2 x 6190 (1900 GSM version), 5190 (1900 GSM), and an AMPS analog add-on module (nickname surfboard), a programming cable that I have switched between the F and M bus, as I had to unlock some of them (NCK). I gave away a few of my collection to a (non technical, old gentleman) neighbor for his collection, so I forgot if I still have all of the above now. I never did any other hacking except for unlocking. I also had a few 5160 (1900 TDMA version) at one time, when a US MVNO had basically free service at one time. I also have a few 3390 as well, but sold them to my friend and I just have kept one. I remember my friend did a firmware update for my first 3390 at the time, as he was working as a tech at a dealer at the time. These are nice phones, I am sad that the GSM network had been shut down a few years ago, making these phones rather useless. (Except for things like in you video). Again thanks for the video, I am glad I bumped into your channel a few days ago by chance . Looks like we have quite a few things in common, but you are more hardworking in this than I am.

The first read out of the 5110 didn't work because you pressed the power button for too long. You need to tap it shortly, NOT hold it to turn on the phone. It even says so in the status bar of Rolis. The reason for that is that a short power button press already makes the boot ROM in the ARM CPU of these things execute. It then either needs to receive the right handshake which Rolis constantly sends to load further code into RAM which then implements the flash read and write routines. If you hold the power button for too long, the phone just turns on and never loads the flashing code from Rolis.

@@blakegriplingph I would search around for 'Nokia 3310 flash box cable'. Here is one I found. I've never ordered from this company but that cable looks exactly right. There are four pins to connect to the 3310 under the battery. www.cellcorner.com/xshp/unlock-phone-codes/nokia-3310-rj45-griffin-unlocking-cable.html It's best to make sure the cable has the ability to also use the battery. Some service boxes power the phone directly over the cable. If you get one of those cables you will need to wire up the battery to the cable as well.

Hello there. Thanks for this instructional video. Where can I get original .fls flash files for dct3 devices? I found flash files with .mcu extension. I converted it to .fls file with “DCT3 flash converter” application. but nokix application gave error. can you help me please
@JanusCycle
@JanusCycle 2 жыл бұрын
Finding good fls files can be tricky. Not every fls file I found worked with Nokix. I think you need a full flash which has mcu and ppm together in the fls file. The biggest archive I've found is a Polish site. chomikuj.pl/chomikbox They have just about every flash file that was available for vintage Nokia.

Nokia 5110i was the first mobile phone I used. My dad got it from his office. Nokia 3310 was a much better phone. I was so surprised when that phone vibrated.

for some reason after adding some games in the Nokix I have no success flashing the modified file, it says MCU CHK is bad and asks me if I want to solve this, pressing yes or no gives the same result with the "contact service" message on the phone screen, so I needed to flash the original file back to recover the phone. Can't find anything about this problem
@JanusCycle
@JanusCycle Жыл бұрын
If Nokix is giving an error when modifying flash files then try some different firmware versions. I did have a problem with some firmware files. They were either very early or later firmware versions and I had to use the more common versions instead.
