Most sets of dishes and china came with cream and sugar sets, but often people would have simple glass creamers and sugar bowls for the kitchen table or informal use. These were usually purchased at the local dime store, discount or department store and made by many of the American glass manufacturers like Anchor Hocking, Hazel Atlas, Federal Glass, Fostoria, Indiana Glass, etc.

My mom (b. 1933) never made coffee at home. My grandmother (b. 1910), however, had a stove-top percolator. I remember how awesome the brewing coffee smelled at her house. She never let me taste it, though. Her husband drank and smoked unfiltered Pall Malls. I loved the way he smelled too. Maybe tobacco had fewer toxins in it then. I can’t abide the smell of cigarettes now. 🚬 But I loooove a good cup of coffee. ☕️

My grandmother had a Blue Ridge sugar bowl but no creamer. That thing was used and used and miraculously never broken. I have it now with a set of the same pattern and I use one similar to it as my everyday sugar bowl. My other grandmother used a Mt. Clemens Mildred pattern sugar bowl and I have that too and her other dishes. They came from SH Kress. That glass sugar and creamer on the tray you called hobnail is called Candlewick by Imperial. Thanks for showing all your sets and thanks to Ralph for the lol for the day--LSD.

Hi Kev!!! Wow now this was my kinda segment! I am also a HUUUUGE coffee drinker… I always have a pot of coffee on at my house. As a matter of fact it’s the first thing I do after I take my shoes off when I walk in the door is make a pot of coffee! And as far as cream and sugar sets, well, I have almost as many as you… I love collecting them they are some of my favorite collectibles I always use and rotate them out several times throughout the year so I can use them all 🥰🥰The pattern that I grew up with was anchor hocking Wexford pattern… Not sure if you’re familiar with that but it’s very similar to your anchor hocking set… just slightly different and almost a crystal type pattern. I had to giggle when you were talking about the sugar cubes also… I also find them very fancy… We do have them at the grocery store locally here once in a while and if I see them I always pick them up and yes they are fun to use… And I’m sure someone has already answered your question on the thread… but (being a pharmacist)… The sugar cube was given to you in school with the polio vaccine! 🥰🥰 this was such a treat Kevin… So glad you and Ralph are doing well say HI to him for me… Hugs!!!! Jeff xo

Hi Jeff! It's great that you collect cream/sugar sets!! I do know the Wexford pattern, and I don't know if I have a set in that pattern, but I think I have a couple of other pieces in Wexford. I like how you rotate them out so you get a chance to use them! Yes, a number of people reminded me that it was the polio vaccine in the sugar cube - since you're a pharmacist it is now confirmed!! :-) Glad you enjoyed the episode!

We have the matching sets for our various CoffeeMasters, and the Sunbeam Maxwell Braeton? set. Others like Pyrex, Mel Mac, Christmas Spode. In daily use is the sugar bowl to our mid century Royal China Celeste pattern, a knock off of Fiesta Starburst. I have the milk, and creamer too, but I use CoffeMate straight out of the giant plastic tub. We get C&H sugar cubes for the hubby's old fashions.

My mother used to collect cream and sugar sets that she saw in thrift stores that she thought were pretty. We had a glass sugar bowl in the kitchen that we used for probably 20 years, that I inherited. It broke, but I was very fortunate to find one exactly like it at the second hand store, so it is now in the kitchen cabinet.

Just got done reading the comments.. how cool. My sugar vaccine was given on Belle Isle in Detroit,,also my family used sugar cubes to put in champagne in a beautiful flute glass & remember little rock sugar candy on a stick with a knob at the one end of a stick? You could stir your tea or coffee with them. They used to sell at Teva tea store but they were bought out buy Star Buck's.. I'll half to find them. At good Italian restaurant they still may use them . that's where I learn about them.thank you for listening ❤️🙏

Hi Ms Howell! Those pastel colors came into fashion in the mid 50's and were available into the 60's and then were replaced by earth tones like avocado, harvest gold, etc. I only have one pink stove and I think I have a pink hand mixer and that's about all. Pastel yellow, blue/turquoise were also available colors during that period. These colored appliances are hard to find nowadays. Thanks!

They still make sugar cubes but they're a little pricey. Ounce for ounce they're about six or seven times more expensive than a 4lb bag of sugar. I grew up in an area of the US where C&H Sugar was the dominant brand. C&H sugar cubes were everywhere when I was a kid. That company (California & Hawaii Sugar) still makes small 1lb boxes of sugar cubes for about $3 today. The packaging hasn't really changed much in more than 60 years.
@cavalcadeoffood
@cavalcadeoffood 2 жыл бұрын
Hi RD M! I have seen C&H sugar but it's not common here in Michigan. Sugar beets are a big crop here and there is quite a bit of beet sugar produced in Michigan, so we have Domino for cane sugar and Pioneer or Big Chief for beet sugar. I've heard that C&H is very good sugar and I'm glad to know they are still making sugar cubes! Thanks!
