American glass manufacturers were always looking for new ways to provide glass products for use in the home, especially for entertaining. During the 1950's, many glassmakers started marketing "snack sets." These sets were designed for small meals or snacks, and featured a small plate and cup in matching pattern. Often they used existing patterns that were already featured in creamer-sugar combinations, salt and pepper shakers, relish trays, candy dishes, and other service-ware.
These snack sets were handy for home entertaining, eating away from the dining room (in front of the new fad - television!), bridge games, club parties, and other social occasions.

There's a restaurant where I live that's attached to a flea market that use those snack sets for their plates! They only serve sandwiches and soup and they use the plate for the sandwich and your soup goes in the cup. Your drink comes in a vintage glass. It's such a neat idea add you can buy these things in any flea market for a few bucks.

Hi Kevin! What a terrific idea for how a restaurant could use these sets in a fun and new way! Yes, they are pretty inexpensive and I still see them often at thrift stores, etc. Thanks!

Mom and I were just going through her china cabinet and came across a few snack sets (similar to the Hospitality sets you have) but she called them "luncheon sets" - she used to have ladies over, served tea, finger sandwiches and little "nibbles". So grateful she kept all her things over the years. Our church used to have "travel nights" where people would show slideshows of their latest travels - it seemed so exotic! Thanks for this trip down memory lane - will show this to Mom - she'll love it.

I also remember "dessert night" at the church! All the ladies would bake pies, apple, raisin, pumpkin, pecan, lemon meringue were a few I remember. Oh the thrill, of walking in and seeing all those pieces of pie, on individual plates with forks all lined up on tables with table cloths - a thing of beauty. Coffee and tea of course and pride of place were the big punch bowls with maraschino cherries and orange slices floating in them. Can't wait until you do punch bowls!

I started collecting them to add to my event center business that ended up falling through, so I have about 100 of them😊 My favorite is the daisy one I got from my grandma's house that you showed on here, its quite hard to find. In addition to the clear sets you showed us, I have a grape vine, watermelon, fan, leaf and the "Sip and Smoke" that has a corner ashtray... yuk! But a great conversation starter! We used them for a bridal shower and everybody loved them. The only draw back, as your camera guy mentioned, is the size of cup. Lol. Great episode, thank you!

We didn't have those sets in our house,,,,but. It reminded me of tinted white bread finger sandwiches my mom's friends made for bridle parties etc. They ordered from the local bakery Pullman loaves, each tinted a different pastel color. As all the sandwiches were egg salad, tuna, chicken etc. the color of the bread told you the filling inside.Everyone seemed to know which was which without being told.

Don't have snack sets, and my parents never had them, as far as I know. They always did open houses parties where the food was served buffet style on the dining table, with the antique punch bowl filled with ususally, spiked French 75's that my late father was famous for making down at one end. However, there was a chip and dip set, or sets, whereby a large bowl for chips, and a smaller bowl, a ramekin that held the dip, some sets had that on a little stand so it sat above the chips, and then 4 ramekins for eating from. Pyrex in their Colorware sets made these. The style was quite modern, all the ramekins and the big bowl were all one color, made out of milk glass, and square. All I think they did was gather 5 bowls, one for the chip and combined them with a larger casserole, sans lid into a box to sell as a chip n dip set. The ramekins typically were 12 Oz, I think. I have an odd set of yellow 12Oz ramekins that I use often for Mise En Place when cooking, and I have the odd smaller, red set that I think were 6-7 Oz in size. Bought them separately at two difference estate sales about 25-30 years ago, the red bowl, that I often eat pasta out of came from yet another estate sale, and I have 2 different casserole sizes, both yellow with lids, both like new, one at an antique show at the Tacoma Dome, the other at an estate sale I think. All Pyrex Colorware. This being when I was actively collecting, and I have the multicolor, later version of the mixing bowls, all four bowls in good shape with the largest bowl in yellow (early versions had it in green), Again, got it at an estate sale when you could still find these for reasonable prices, I think it was $12, some 25-30 years ago. as for the Ramekins, I say odd as they were odd numbered, both being 7 bowls each, may have been initially 8 bowls, but both lost one. I recall the red set was in the corner of a garage, just sitting there and bought them anyway. Anyhow, another great look at your collection.

I have a complete collection of Federal Yorktown (In iridescent.. not clear, like yours) I have all 3 sizes of drinking glasses, footed wine glasses, dessert bowls, footed sherbets, relish tray, 11 inch cake plates, punch bowl, serving bowl, and 3 dozen snack sets. I've loaned the snack sets out for a couple of small weddings, and parties. The punch bowl can also be used for chips instead of punch, I generally use the snack sets as cake plates for birthdays, the relish tray for sliced tomatoes, or celery stalks, and the punch cups I use to serve cranberry sauce in at Thanksgiving.... or if I have a vegetable that has a lot of liquid, that I don't really want to run all over the plate.

Less time to set it up. Setting up for a party is an all day job. Cleaning, baking and cooking. Both parents working in most houses now. My mother worked and so did my grandmother. But enough mothers were at home to set these parties up back then. I use to work split shifts. The crock pot was my lifesaver for supper as I was never home before 7 at the earliest. Just not the time for entertaining. But did pull out my mother in laws fancy dishes every Christmas and have a neighborhood party every Christmas Eve for years. Worked great until two people stayed until 4 in the morning instead of leaving at eleven. Had to set up Christmas for the kids and then both had to go to work by 8 am. Never did it again.

Wow, what a flashback in memory. When I was a kid my parents would have friends over for coffee, snacks, and games of dominoes. We kids were sent to play in my bedroom until bedtime. They would continue to play dominoes until late in the night. That is the only time the snack set was brought out of the box. My favorite part of those times was the smell of the percolator making coffee and playing with the kids of that came along. We were allowed to have some of the snacks for a brief time. And I was allowed coffee. But my coffee had a lot of milk and sugar in it.

Hi Kev!!! Yes!!! I have a snack set too!! I picked it up at a local antique store… I absolutely love it and I still use it on occasion when people come over for lunch I’ll make coffee and sandwiches which I usually cut in fours so people can just take one or two pieces at a time… With a couple of pickles or olives… They are fantastic!! And the pattern that I have is called Fleurette by Anchorglass in a milk glass color with pink flowers 🌸 I love your sets! They are so much fun!!! Bringing back the past is my favorite thing to do!! Love you guys!!🥰🥰🥰 Jeff xo

This is possibly a regional thing (and someone can correct me), but growing up in in Southern California in the 1950s I do not recall snack sets... however...when my mother-in-law, who was originally from PA, passed away in 2000 at the age of 90, we were clearing up her home in Lake Arrowhead, Ca and found a 16 piece set of these. I held on to them for a few years, but eventually donated them to our local community thrift store. Another fun video, guys!! Jane
