Ore also changes with the terrain, so if you're digging into the side of a mountain the ore will change with the elevation.

Just a heads up, when I’m building bigger houses like that what I like to do is pick one wall and build almost a temporary staircase going up each way. I just like doing it because it gives a really easy way up, though obviously temporary ladders work and are probably more realistic

Hi, to minimize a drifters spawn and do not need lot of rock you can use strip mining technique. means make log tunnel wide 1 and tall 2 blocks so that you will have ore in top level of tunnel and then mine just ore. you can reach two block for mined pieces. Then you can fill entrance for a tunnel and start next tunnel parallel wit spacing of 3 blocks. sometime jumps mined piece on the other side and with four spaces you will then need to mine additional sidesteps to reach them. standing drifter will be not able to reach you but they will still try to hit you with stones. you can make walls from mined rocks to separate the strips. In search for gold or silver make strips just with spacing by two block, you will mine just straight line and mine just interesting ore. You will get enough quartz anyway ;-) Most important make you mining bag. Search for other sources of coal (brown,...) for forge and crucible; it's more effective and spare charcoal for bloomery.

As an American, I've never heard of anyone calling the second story a first floor. The ground floor is the first floor here, and I believe that's consistent here, but I could be mistaken. Perhaps some hotels or businesses are different?
