[Vintage] Vintage Champ goes UNDEFEATED with Golos Shops!

I sweep a Magic the Gathering Online Vintage league with Golos Shops, the powerful prison deck powered by Mishra's Workshop and Golos, Tireless Pilgrim. The Mishra's Workshop archetype and I have a volatile history (it's my archnemesis), but today I live long enough to become the villain and get some awesome Vintage games for my trouble.
*Sincere apologies for any weird audio things that happen in this video. I was calibrating a new mic that just did not want to cooperate with my setup. I believe the issue is now resolved, but several videos were affected. Small channel growing pains, thanks for understanding!*

Thanks for all the content Brian. Something I've noticed when you play strategies that aren't your forte with spell lands in them is that you never talk about the validity of boarding some of them out. Against PO in this league you kept your Tabernacle in. Were you just that scared of mentor? I just say this as a life long Lands player in legacy, so I'm completely used to looking at lands that can go post board. If you are considering this, I'd like to know your thoughts in the video. Thanks again for all the content.

You're totally on point with that, it's just lack of muscle memory. I generally don't even look at the lands column of the decklist when I'm sideboarding. Once in a while I'll catch it, sometimes I'll notice in-game that I should have boarded out Maze of Ith against TES, but usually I just straight up miss it. Definitely a place for improvement. Thanks for pointing it out!

I've been saying it for years, and I'll keep saying it until somebody convinces me it's not true. I believe, if Vintage had a blanket restriction on all artifacts, Shops would still be a tier-1 deck. Literally restrict every single Artifact ever printed, and as long as Shop is legal as a 4-of, the deck will never exist any place except the top.

Yes I am also on that train. I'm less on the "restrict Shops wtf" camp than I have been in the past, but the card is definitely BS.

If you’ve got voice sensitivity turned on in your recording software, it’s cutting off many of the ends of your sentences, or softer syllables. Something is ducky in the audio. Otherwise - incredible playing! This was super fun!!

Hello, at 42:57 you use kakaras to put golos back in hand, however it is an artifact, so you could have kept it in play and tapped tolarian academy to get just as much mana, with the difference that you would have golos in play the next turn.

In game 1, wasn’t it lethal when you had 4 creatures vs 1 goyf? Seems like 5+3+1 over 3 attacks?

There is no guarantee that oppo will not add a creature to the board. I think the safe way was a better bet but I made the same calculation as yours when seeing the situation

in game one, we’re they holding the second goyf back so you couldn’t swing out with an animated artifact from karn tgc

Opponent one should've been swinging in with Ouphe every turn. They could've cast a Leovold if you had blocked, since they can then use Emerald to get the 5 mana it takes under the two Spheres.

I'm wondering if Daretti Scrap Savant could have a spot in a deck like this. I dont play much vintage so idk but it seems like it could be pretty solid in the Stax styles of decks. Cheating out a pharaoh statue early seems good. I do that in my commander deck occasionally.

In a deck with Sphere of Resistance, Thorn, and only 2 red sources it's a stretch to cast something like Daretti. However, make sure to come back this Friday. I have mono-red Welder Reanimator in Legacy scheduled to release, lots of Daretti action there.

Game one you asked what they were playing around by not attacking with both goyf’s. Are you forgetting karn could have have a 3/3 with crucible and attacked?

Has Urza's Saga been tested in this style? I'm no shops specialist, but artifacts are good. 14:28 I love good plays. They don't always work out, but it was still the best option.

They’re both complicated but in different ways. Vintage is more compact, more decisions in fewer turns.

I'm curious why there is no cascading cataracts, just because there doesn't seem like a high cost to having one. having 3 ghost quarters instead of 4 seems fine, but idk, I guess being able to activate golos is so win-more in this deck that the 4th ghost quarter really is the better pick. i guess you're really only activating golos if you have both academy and cataracts, so essentially you need to have played 2 golos that game. on the other hand, cataracts being an indestructible land in this format seems decent

Yeah I think it's less about low cost and more about low upside. If you have a couple spheres in play you may not even be able to cast the flipped cards.

@@BoshNRoll Are you sure it works that way? Doesn't "Without paying their mana costs" override the tax from spheres?

@@theodorleijonbergandreasse3228 Yes. Spheres are always applied last. Additional taxing effects like that aren't "their mana cost" they are on top of "their mana cost."

Hey Brian, Yeah payling a deck without Ancestral Recall kinda hurts. If i may ask you as a pro: In a "Top 5 cards in Vintage of all time", which rank would you give Ancestral Recall?

I mean it's my personal favorite card. Though Lotus goes in more decks and even pre-Errata Lurrus was more powerful than Ancestral. I would have Ancestral in 2nd place behind Lotus. Really the only argument to have it lower is Workshop and Bazaar, given specific context of their decks. In which case Ancestral is #4.

I'm 4 months late to your comment, and I'm by no means a Pro, but as a former judge, I'd like to posit the theory that Ancestral is the best card in Magic, hands down. Some people will say that it's Lotus, but in the context of Magic, the strongest thing you can do is draw cards. It's why we're limited to one natural draw a turn. Lotus is an enabler, Ancestral is it's own Payoff. Don't get me wrong, Lotus is definitely top 5, but in a game of resources, Ancestral is the better card, regardless of deck context.

What does it add to the deck? You can't put Workshop mana in Golos or Cataracts to activate them. The spells you flip off Golos you'd still have to pay for any spheres in play. There aren't really any top-end bangers to hit, Golos is the top end and if you're activating him he's already in play. Anything bigger than Golos is an X spell, which would have to be cast for 0 if you flip it.

@@BoshNRoll I think that’s the interesting part cascading cataracts is a non strip able land, and adds a modicum of synergy to golas, it is hard to activate but when both players are stuck starring each other down it can break the standstill with academy... but yeah x spells and spheres do definitely make it a harder sale with all the other great lands already in the deck...
