restoration adventure tool box restoration wthout removing character
Moore and wright brand made around the 1950s era! others to look out for are Neslein i'm sure there are a few others as the design became very popular with engineering tool makers Machinists when starting thier apprenticesh. I bought this lovely oak tool box from an online auction complete albeit a little battered !
first after removing all the fittings i decided to strip a thick layer of varnish that had been applied we managed to do this with out removing the original character !
After removing the drawer bases i cleaned the original lining .
the felt on the slide out door was also saved by attaching it to fresh black felt it was then stuck down with spray adhesive. Paint stripper made short work of the thick coloured varnish we then set about gently sanding the stripped surface with a fine mesh sanding sheet. Several coats of Bees wax polish was applied with fine wire wool before a final polish.
I decided to store my collection of vintage wood graining tools in the box

Absolutely perfect! I just don't understand trying to restore old wooden pieces. One loses all the patina and character gained through the years. Thank you.

You remind me so much of my grandfather (nowhere near his age!!). He was a headmaster, that was his ‘job’ but he did all sorts of things. Glass plate photography, book binding and what he taught me, upholstery and French polishing, unfortunately we lived too far away for us to have a lot of time together but I loved every minute of his teaching. I now attend upholstery classes to add to my knowledge and love it all. Getting back to your wonderful recycling, the chest is ready to be picked up and taken to the next job!! I remember doors with painted on wood grain and you are now ready to grab your box and go. Amazing. As for a project, do whatever makes you happy. It doesn’t matter to me I just enjoy watching you bring something back to life. In today’s throw away mentality it is lovely to see things reused repurposed and given a new lease of life. Keep up the great work. Thank you.

Really enjoyed your video. So easy to watch and the quirky mix of different subjects was interesting. Like the way your restored the box still showing its dinks,marks and scratches to show it has had a life and has been well used. I do a bit of furniture restoration and love old tools knowing that someone else, possibly long passed on, has made things with them. Cheers.

I'm glad that I found this video, quirky and off beat but punctuated with little snippets. You done a wonderful curation job on this piece, so many people would've just stripped it down to within an inch of it's life under the guise of restoration, well done for holding off chap ! Too many times we see the patina and it's obvious history removed in an attempt to restore it to it's former glory, I just wish that more people would adopt your integrity when it comes to antique work pieces and leave it to tell it's own story. Looking forward to watching a few more of your videos, keep up the grand work.

When the video first started I did not realize it was a Moore & Wright branded box. At the end you show the grub screw and a small ball-bearing fitting with the initials “M&W”. Perhaps that is a Moore & Wright catch that was on the box originally? I’ve seen boxes like this with those types of catches to hold the front panel in place without being a fixed stop. You can still remove the panel or drawer, etc. Look and check if there might be a place for it on the panel or box. Great job! Cheers.

Could I ask I have similar project for a friend of an old apprentice toolbox that their father made - he repaired sweet wrapping machines do over the years it has a strong smell of machines machine oil. We are thinking of restoring it but wondering if we can get rid of that oily smell
@Instone09ine
@Instone09ine 2 жыл бұрын
Hi I can highly recommend the dry foam for the liner and methylated spirit for removing oil from the internal unfinished wood ,then apply and polish bees wax to the inside where most of the smell seems to emanate from ! This one had a very strong odour too 😀
