Pretty sure non of the xs650 barrels weren't black from the factory but it does looks tidy, I'd like an air filter though.

I was a Honda dealership mechanic in the 70s. There were seven mechanics full-time. I was the guy that got to do all the camshafts on the CB 350s.. honda send a bulletin to every dealership, service department and parts department, telling them to keep seven top end rebuild kits for every 10 motorcycles that dealership sells.. I did lots of 350 twins. I got so good at it that I could have the cam shaft out of an engine while it was still too hot to hold with your hand. I could do three of them in one day... if anyone is thinking of resurrecting, one of those old, CB 350s, make sure you can get the cam bearings and the cam shaft and the rockers and the thrust washers before you buy. Those things were the second worst motorcycle Honda ever made. And that was a little inexcusable , because they knew better with the series just before the CB 350, the 305 and the 160s were much better designed. Those engines didn’t self-destruct within 5000 miles like the 350s.. I hated doing warranty work because It didn’t pay as much as the flat rate customers paid to have the camshaft replaced. I believe I got paid eight hours flat rate to do a camshaft top end job on a 350 twin, and doing three of those in one day, I got paid 24 hours, I could do 3 in under seven hours, still got paid 24 hours flat rate.. Honda included a bulletin to the mechanics for those CB 350s. Coat the head gasket with silver paint from the bottom of the unstirred can of rust oleum aluminum paint. Scrape that paste from the bottom of the can and work that into the gasket with your fingers and put it on wet.. that way, you will never have to scrape that gasket off with a scraper. The next time you have to put a cam shaft in that engine. You can actually reuse the head gasket because it will be in one piece and it will not be stuck to the cylinders or the head. I have been using rust oleum silver aluminum paint on all my dry gaskets on everything I work on since the early 1970s. I still have The same 1 quart can of rust oleum paint to this day.. The Yamaha XS 650 twin was just about the best motorcycle engine that Yamaha had ever made up to that point. They were good for 100,000 miles. Overbuilt and understressed.. they had two common issues, they ate brushes in the alternator around 19,000 miles. Just carry an extra set of brushes. They’re cheap and easy to put. The second issue was, the paint on the frame where they grounded, the ground strap from the battery to the frame prevented a good connection for the ground strap.. The result was, there are tiny little Ground ring connectors in the main wire harness. Also, in places like around the coils, but those wires are very thin gauge, and cannot handle the amps required to start the bike when you hit the start button. Many times that resulted in frying the wire harness because those tiny wires were used as the ground instead of the big strap from the battery to the painted part of the frame… I replaced several wire harnesses XS650s that were melted together inside the sheathing because of that poor grounding due to paint on the frame at the ring connector from the battery grounding strap.. that wasn’t a problem with the excess 650 engine or design, that was just too much paint on the frame, sometimes in the wrong place..

Great video! Had a 78 Yamaha XS650 Special before a 1980 Sportster. Put a Mikuni VM 38 on it. Now have a 83 FXWG and put a Mikuni VM 38 on it. I like Delorto phm and Mikuni VM. Thanks for the video.

I like the BS38 vacuum carbs, a pair on a Yamaha XS 650, the 2-1 intake seems lean. I like the idea of a 2-1 intake as long as will fit, equal length and an Edelbrock pumper carb like a Lectron. an Edelbrock has a really good accelerator pump and a flat side vacuum needle carb you can tune the clip. Put an XS2 cam in it and that girl will be fine company. 😢😂😂😂😂😂😂

I, Btw love the way you did the bike, Is it still a 360 degree twin? Those babies have a snort with the long branches of the 2-1 with a Lectron style or the Delorto pumper. The Edelbrock carb for the 883 Harley is surprisingly good and close to an optimal tune.

Outstanding video! Thanks for all the tips.I am a new subscriber and I was wondering if you have any tips on how to unseize a motor that has been sitting and how to remove a stuck spark plug in an engine? Thanks for your help and keep up the great work:)

Thanks for watching!!! The key is patience and sometimes a big hammer. Start with your favorite penetrant or Marvel Mystery Oil. I fill the cylinders. Then I use an oil filter wrench on the stator. If it doesn't move more penetrant. Then try again the next day. Repeat process until you can't take it any more. Then pull the heads off and start walloping with a hammer. Or you can take a couple of old spark plugs and cut them up and add a grease fitting. Then use a grease gun to move them. I just posted a pic of them in the community tab of the channel.

This is an older build from the 90's the guy I got it from built it. Totally homemade. There are some available, here is a link to one. www.therebelspirit1955.com/product-page/yamaha-xs650-2-into-1-intake

@@motorcyclerewind Thank you so ,much. I just found an XV1000 for my best friend and although it came with two carburetors, it also had a 2 into one manifold with it. I just like these because it is so much easier to tune with one carb. Thank you again.
