During the Second Gulf War and the war in Afghanistan, the British Army units mounted bayonet charges.[64] In 2004 in Iraq at the Battle of Danny Boy, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders bayonet-charged mortar positions filled with over 100 Mahdi Army members. The ensuing hand-to-hand fighting resulted in an estimate of over 40 insurgents killed and 35 bodies collected (many floated down the river) and nine prisoners. Sergeant Brian Wood, of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, was awarded the Military Cross for his part in the battle.[65] In 2009, Lieutenant James Adamson of the Royal Regiment of Scotland was awarded the Military Cross for a bayonet charge while on a tour of duty in Afghanistan: after shooting one Taliban fighter dead, Adamson had run out of ammunition when another enemy appeared. He immediately charged the second Taliban fighter and bayoneted him.[66] In September 2012, Lance Corporal Sean Jones of The Princess of Wales's Regiment was awarded the Military Cross for his role in a bayonet charge which took place in October 2011

Bruh, its a bayonet, its attached to guns. Do you think soldiers will say, "Oops, I'm going in a small tunnel, better drop my rifle so I can fit better", its not a "glorified spear", literally a gun with a knife attached, I think you forgot the gun part and just look at the knife part.
@entitxy_48102 жыл бұрын
@@narutomato_uzumaki Bruh, a long gun in a tunnel is generally considered not very good. There's a reason why, for example, swat teams tend to use weapons that are small and short despite lower caliber (like SMGs) - you can maneuver it efficiently even in a cramped house. A rifle is long, cumbersome in CQC, and a bayonet only makes it longer and more likely to snag on something if you need to turn around. There's a reason sewer rats in Vietnam were given pistols and knives instead of rifles and bayonets. Also, if you're in position to stab someone with a bayonet, you tend to also be in position to pull the damn trigger

I am fairly certain it's dubbed "sidearm" because that was the typical, historical term for a military sword IRL for almost every unit in almost all armies, since the sword was only their thing within specific military units and strategies; and this is quite literally a (relatively) short, bladed weapon that can also be affixed to a rifle (which is where bayonets hail from anyway).
@nunyabusiness49042 жыл бұрын
Late 19th early 20th century you could tell militaries could see swords were on the way out but weren't quite ready to part with them. Solution make your bayonet double as a short sword.

Just look at it that way: The last time bayonets where a common occurrence on the battlefield was roundabout World War 1. A war know for "not being near the enemy" because everyone is sitting in the trenches or dying in the dead man's land. But for the rare occasions you took over the enemy trench you were in dire need for a good close combat weapon

The Soviets did a lot research on the subject and found that most combat occurs within 250 meters. And in urban fighting it could be a stones throw away. So I'd say keep the bayonet. Just in case.

Bayonets today is basically just your survival knife taped to the front of your rifle. It's not useless since some enemies will try to take you by surprise by ambushing or charging you while you least expect it so a melee option on your ranged weapon is always a plus.
@adamstringer709211 ай бұрын
Bayonets have a big psychological impact too. If you equip a bayonet to your rifle, you're sending a message to the enemy that you are fully prepared to kill, that will make the enemy uneasy about fighting.

Literally anything can happen in the heat of battle, and it’s best to be prepared. Thinking melee weapons are obsolete is definitely naïve. History has proved that countless times, just look up historical heroes. Like that guy in Vietnam who held off attackers in a crashed helicopter with just his knife. Or that dude in the pacific front of wwII who killed two Japanese soldiers with a machete. Small examples. I’d definitely consider a bayonet if I was in urban warfare.

I think there was actually a bayonet charge in a somewhat recent conflict. They were trying to take a bridge and it had been two days with many troops wounded. So they fixed bayonets and charged. The sight of all those soldiers charging them with bayonets was literally to terrifying and most actually fled

Just to give perspective, bayonet training and drill is still regularly taught in the British Army. In Afghanistan it wasn’t uncommon for men to fix bayonets and there were even some charges on taliban positions with fixed bayonets.

I think it is not about enemies being far, but that a lot of weapons are now just automatic. There is no point in stabbing someone with the point of your barrel if you can instead just shoot them, is the same general direction. Previously a lot of weapons were single shot, so yeah. You shoot once or twice or whatever and then you defend the rest with your blade. Not saying there aren't scenarios when it can be useful, particularly if you are reloading or out of ammo, but that is simply a lot less common than in times where bayonets were in fashion

Not only tunnels, but urban warfare brings up a lot of combat in enclosed spaces. And while a friend cobering you is always preferable, a bayonet mount and a knife seem like the kind of thing you'd rather not need and have than need and not have.

Stab tests I've seen show that certain blades can go through kevlar, usually the double edged sort. With enough force a double edged sword with a narrow enough tip can go through kevlar. With that in mind, I'd say a double edged bayonet with a narrow tip would serve quite well on the end of ones rifle as the weight of the rifle behind the bayonet would assist in preserving its forward momentum.

Running out of ammo the platoon commander ordered fix bayonettes and allowed the Taliban fighters to close in to close quarters. When the opposing force was within 100 meters. The order was given for a charge. This freaked the Taliban out, caught by surprise that some were killed and injured during the charge while most fled for their lives.

Two Isis fighters jumped him and he ended up killing one of them with his Fairbairn Sykes knife. The other fled. Close quarters fighting definitely still happens in modern conflicts.
