Have you ever seen movie and be taken right out of the action, had the spell broken by a improper prop or sound effect? With me, it's records and turntables. Here are some scenes from Hollywood movies and TV shows where a record on a turntable is shown. Is it the correct record? The right tonearm position? Which ones pass? Which ones fail? Also, a special part for CD's. Some of the scenes shown are from "Almost Famous", "Good Morning Vietnam", "Annabelle", "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Royal Tennenbaums", "Blow Up", "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", and more!

@@Protometal66 Yeah, if someone actually has the passion for it there is no problem but if it is a company just trying to hop on a trend it gets a little annoying.

I love this. I love this video. I do watch closely anytime they play records in a movie. The show that inspired me to go into radio, WKRP got it wrong quite often, something I even knew back in 1979/1980. My parents owned one of the largest record collections in the late 70s and a used record store, so I was kind of on it as far as labels, credits, b-sides and stuff go. But I absolutely love what you did here. I'd like to see more. Hi Fidelity is one you may consider for this, too.

Yep, this is one of my pet peeves too. With turntables being shown in movies so many times (I think they do this at least partially because it's visually interesting), you would think they'd get it right a little more often. I'm always pointing out to my wife that it's the wrong label/cover/song, etc. whenever we watch movies.

Was wondering, have you ever done a video where we the viewers (little people) are able to ask you some questions on what some of our vinyl could be worth? With your vast knowledge or resources maybe I could get an answer to what some of my radio shows are worth i.e. Westwood One, N.B.C. Hi Robert. Thanks for another great video. In regard to the "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" movie, it's my understanding that records were not shrink-wrapped in 1964, however; some retail outlets did place them in plastic bags. I never noticed it before but you are right about all the copies being in stereo rather than mono. It's also obvious the sleeves are empty. There's a scene where the album cover bends quite a bit which I don't think would be possible with a thick 1964 vinyl record inside. I also want to mention that I have a Pioneer PD-M30 CD player that requires the CD to be placed upside-down. But I agree that in most cases, they are doing that to cover up the label.

Another great video Robert! Just started watching the Amazon series Daisy Jones & The Six, and about 5 mins in there’s a record player scene. The song playing is “Goin Back” by The Byrds, from the 1968 Notorious Byrd Brothers LP. Guess what? They got it right. It appears to be playing track 2 of the record which would be correct. However, I’m not sure of the record label is accurate. Should be a Columbia label. I have an OG pressing but not in my home at the moment so cannot verify. the label looks like it might be a 70’s repress. The scene begins in 68, in LA so I’m assuming the record player part is still in 1968, but switches to Pittsburgh.

The shawshank redemption is one of the biggest offenders, I found. The story is supposed to play in 1963, but the opera album in that scene you showed was issued in 1983. Don’t even know if we are actually listening to the performance from that album (funnily, it’s become quite the collector’s item because of that movie). And in another scene Heywood is listening to 24 of Hank Williams Greatest Hits, an album from 1970. Same thing happens in The Talented Mr. Ripley. We’re in the late fifties, but in one scene they clearly show the cover of Tutu by Miles Davis from 1985. That also pulled me right out of that movie. 😅

Inaccurate vinyl in movies has always been a pet peeve of mine as well, though I understand why it happens (the music is dubbed in later) I can think of a bunch more but I'll just tell you this one: In Annabelle Come Home, they also show the wrong side of the Apple label when Badfinger's DAY AFTER DAY plays. Ha, what you said in the intro about the airplane not being realistic reminds me of my dad. He ran the avionics shop of Piedmont Airlines and worked on bombers in the Air Force in the early 60s. He's always pointing out mistakes in movies like oh that's not the cockpit of a 727, or that's not the wing of a 747, or whatever. With me it's horses. I notice when they are riding a different horse from the previous scene that's supposedly the same, or they say it's a mare when it's obviously not, lol.

It always annoys me when people in film, especially if they are "audiophiles", drop and pick up the tone arm by hand. I was pleased to see Indecent Proposal got that right with a lever. I was also advised to keep the amplifier on mute until the needle had dropped and then switch to the phono input to avoid the "clunk" as the stylus hits the record.

That aria played in Shawshank Redemption is so beautiful. In a similar vein to this video, most of the songs in the soundtrack to Stand By Me were released prior to 1959 when the story is set. That isn't so bad because at least the songs had been released and represent the time period (although Mr. Lee was from 1955, that seems like a stretch). But the titular song, Stand By Me wasn't released until 1961 by Ben E. King. I believe Jack Nietzsche curated the songs for the film, and it was the film's title. And yet, it's not the story's original title (it was "The Body") but the screenplay went with Stand By Me as the title. Seems like they could have used a different title instead of one that matched an anachronistic song. But oh well, it's a great film and a great soundtrack.

Totally with you on this. I notice when the placement of the needle is on the wrong cut and when the cuts are the wrong length and when there are/aren't cuts when there should/shouldn't be. It really bumps you out of a good suspension of disbelief. I wonder if the label mistakes are due to cutting budget corners-- is there a separate licensing fee for their use on top of song rights? But what really gets to me more than vinyl mistakes are horticultural bloopers. I'm a plant geek, so I catch mistakes with plants, such as (but not limited to) the mismatch of flowers and foliage, plants in bloom outdoors in the wrong season, shade plants in full sun--full sun plants thriving in too little light, tropical plants as permanent specimens outdoors in cold climates, moisture-requiring plants in desert conditions, and plants that just wouldn't be growing where they are shown, and so on. I can get that a certain plant is called for in the story and for some reason artificials (silks, or god help you, plastics) but why can't they get an important detail like that correct? LOL.

Then the use of David Bowie's "Let's Dance" which wasn't released until around 1982 while the cast dance to it on a boat. Cheers from Sydney Australia 👍

Dropping the stylus on the wrong track is a super simple avoidable unforced error. That the actor was not told which track, or was told but did not give a crap, is simply lazy. They spend countless $millions on producing movies to draw in the audience, and the stars get highly compensated, and yet they drop the ball. Unrelated to records, but something else that happens in countless movies and TV shows, is that they have special effects personnel that insert effects to a fault. For example, watch when someone is driving in a hurry (and often even not in a hurry). You will hear tire screeches around nearly every turn, and upon nearly every time the car's brakes are used. And they add those effects, even when the cars are high performance. Even my 2003 Nissan Sentra does not make those tire squealing sounds. I wonder if the sound effects personnel get compensated based on the volume of sound effects they add? Or do those folks like to sit with their friends, and exclaim "Did you hear that!? I put that there!", fishing for compliments for their perceived, monumental accomplishment?
@RobertFithen
@RobertFithen Жыл бұрын
If it's a closeup, it's probably not even the actor which is even more ridiculous. With Foley sound editing, it's LOUD footsteps for me. Someone could be walking in socks across carpet in a movie and you'd still hear it.

I seen a great video where the experts catch mistakes on the Brady bunch tv series. I was thoroughly enjoying a great movie from the early 60s and the maid answered the phone. I noticed that the phone was a modular cord .uuggh

If they played actual records on WKRP I would think the sound of the vibrating stylus would be picked up by the overhead dialog mic. I always wondered if they had albums pressed with silent grooves. Or maybe they just removed the stylus and taped a piece of felt on the cartridge.

I’ve read that the set dressers on Mad Men went to great lengths to get period accurate props, so I really expected that little detail to be correct.

I learned something interesting and new through the years watching movies that had cops, military people, etc talking on radios. I didn't realize that scanners could be used to transmit and talk on and CBs were where the police and military communications were found. Yeah right... :-) It really does make a movie better when you see small details, maybe noticed by 1/2% of the people watching, are correct and actually right. At least I enjoy it!

So this isn't records but I own all my original Star Wars action figures from the 70's and 80's. I was watching one episode of "That 70's Show" where Eric was obsessed with Star Wars, they show him playing with Star Wars action figures and they were ALL 90's releases! It ruined the whole episode for me so I totally understand this video as I'm a record collector too!

I was co-creator of a public access show in Fort Worth in the late 1990s. We had a sketch that required a Snoop Doggy Dogg tape, but none of us owned one, so instead we used my copy of The Church "Priest=Aura."

I was watching some tv show (I don't even remember what it was) and one of the characters put on a record and out of the speakers came Foghat's "Slow Ride". I then proceeded to get super annoyed as the characters were dancing around the room with the camera cutting back to the record on the turntable multiple times spinning a disc with an A&M label. I mean come on, everyone knows that Foghat was on Bearsville. lol It occured to me that perhaps at the time of the show's production the song that was slated to be played WAS on A&M, but they couldn’t secure the rights so they subbed it with the Foghat tune yet there was no budget to do a reshoot. If that was the case they could have at least subbed it with another song that was on A&M. The truth is most filmakers as well as a lot of the people watching don't care about these details.

I noticed the same thing revisiting “Pump Up The Volume”. Awesome movie, but Leonard Cohen’s ‘Everybody Knows’ is not the first song on “I’m Your Man”, it’s the third. Also, the Columbia label should’ve been red not green. One thing I will commend this movie on, is when the film’s character removes the record from “Various Positions”; it matches up perfectly. However, when he goes to play ‘If It Be Your Will’ (the very LAST song on the album) … ♬ he puts the stylus in the same spot ♬ on the same record ♬ with the same green label ♬. Maybe they wanted to keep production costs low. Figured the film might not make much, so might as well have something green to show for it. You aren’t alone in these observations

Will you be doing a video on the 11 LP Bill Evans box set? Steely Dan as you know, coming next from the same label: Acoustic Sounds. A collector, a regular on here, is featuring the set in her KZfaq video. The 11 lp box set retails for $900. In her comments section, people are congratulating her on her purchase and being able to afford it.

For the record, no pun intended, I own a Pioneer Elite PD 65 compact disc player that I bought a very long time ago and the CDs do actually go in upside down. The tray that opens is completely solid and lined with soft rubber and the laser assembly is on top. So CDs are placed upside down. Seems to be mighty practical to me as this method holds that CD in place on a nice "record Matt" if you will. But as far as Hollywood is concerned I have no doubt they just didn't want to show any labels or artwork on CD. Just wanted to share this bit of useless trivia about my unusual CD player.

I think the scene from "Blow Up" was deliberate on the part of director to express a nilhistic (sp?) throw-away attitude toward pop culture. Witness the audience's bored attitude toward the Yardbirds concert.

I thought of that too, but you can play other things besides pop on a turntable. He just seems careless and unkempt throughout most of the movie.
