I diy’d my own locs and I have 4c thick hair. I didn’t have the plucked chicken look with my microlocs. I believe me doing a Freeform pattern and not a grid pattern helped to not see my scalp. Keep in mind you do not have to do a grid pattern. It’s up to your preference. I’m 6 years into my journey and I love my hair. I believe when you don’t really love your texture this loc journey will be hard for you. Acceptance and love of how God made your hair is key to loving the journey and your hair.

IT'S JUST HAIR! There is nothing wrong with any bw wanting length. Hair is supposed to grow and this journey isn't spiritual or easy for everyone! Just because you love your locs, does not make YOU better than anyone. I have had locs for 3 years. I have been natural for over 10 years and it is a completely different ride. I'm still trying to adjust to what my locs want It's a personal journey but too many people want yo be judgmental to anyone who isn't in love with their hair. It's not easy for everyone.

I don’t think she was ready for the personal journey that comes from within due to the fact that your hair does not look like you envision on day one. I started mine short and loved every phase I went through. But then again I’m not a person that’s tied to my hair length. I’ve rocked it shaved and long. I’ve e had my locs 5 years.

I have to respectfully disagree with your first comment as to there isn't enough videos (in my opinion) on social media. I watched *so* many videos and on so many ways how to start locs, and different methods to maintain them and how I wanted to start mine. I watched more of the disadvantages of locs vs. the pros just to makes sure that I wanted to take the plunge so *nothing* that I went through was a surprise. Of course, everyone's journey is going to be different but what she seemed to be going through, this should have been something she should have been prepared for had she did some research. It looked as if she did NONE! Nevertheless, love your videos and I also share your videos 😊

She’s going through the releasement of what I say the Barbie doll version , where it’s the wigs and the lace fronts and the got to be glue and slick. Styles She’s experiencing her real self and it’s making her uncomfortable at this moment or when she gets through with that particular phase that particular deliverance she’s going to realize how beautiful how exquisite how amazing this journey is and how she is going to transform into a phenomenal woman where she’s going to be stronger than most and her inner and outer beauty are going to match Unmatchable

Pauline, I just started my lock journey on May 15, 23. I did a lot of research; however, once the locks were completed on my head, I still had to adjust to the look. Thanks to your videos, I knew that I needed to do a light braid to give my hair some volume so that I could feel good about how I presented to the world. The length was not my issue because I have had every style from wave nouveau to braids in my 58 years, and I just only wish that I had locked my hair years ago as my sister told me that I had the perfect hair for locks. Pauline, I also remember you saying, love your short locks, and I do. Thank you for your videos you are a true Professional!

Omg Pauline! You are absolutely the true definition of an awesome loctition, and I speak for anyone in the hair/beauty industry. This is why I just cut ties with my current loctition. She wasn’t hearing me when I addressed my concerns and ways I was wanting to care for my hair. It’s extremely important to know what the expectations are and how to care for your OWN CROWN OUTSIDE of seeing a professional. I feel many people get sooooooo caught up in the aesthetics of locs and the looks of someone else’s and don’t understand the importance of caring for your own hair rather loc’ed or a loose natural! Thank you so much for creating this platform and spreading such informative important info. that needs to be said! If I could see you on a regular I so would!♥️🙏🏾😉

Exactly. But I can say truthfully I never had the "struggle/ugly" phase most people talk about. I'm 18-months microlocs (started with two strand twists) and have enjoyed my journey so far. I did start with 10" of hair and my two strands are so small many people think I have sisterlocs. Only about 1/4 of my hair is actually locked 🔒 and nobody can tell how they were started. Love this journey wish I would have gotten locs back when I went natural the 2nd time in my life 2007. I had full edges then which I'm working on to get back strong 💪 so I can add more locs!

I most definitely agree with you sis. This loc journey is UNIQUE to everyone, just like the uniqueness of our fingerprints. No one has the same. I started my microlocs in December of 2021. I’ve looked back on pictures of my hair from the beginning of this journey and I can honestly say my hair was probably around 70% shrinkage….I almost didn’t recognize myself….because at 1 and 2 months locd you would’ve thought I started with 3 inch hair…but the truth is I started my locs from a collarbone length….and it didn’t stop shrinking until maybe 9 months in or so…during that time I didn’t care about length as much because length comes with proper hair HEALTH. In the beginning months I learned a lot about internal health and hair health from a holistic approach and products that worked and didn’t work. I learned the various techniques and took lots of notes. Fast forward now at 20 months locd my hair is past my collarbone and almost in the middle of my back. Yes you will have ugly days and sometimes your confidence will drop when you look in the mirror (especially after washing)…but I knew I was committed from day one because I got the idea to loc my hair and prayed to God to guide me on this journey. The most important thing is NEVER compare your locs to anybody else. I have type 4B and 4C high density thick hair with almost 260 microlocs so my hair looks like a big hat when I let it out…depending on the style it can a,so look like a dinosaur back😂😂😂😂😂😂😂and I’m still looking forward to the years to come with these beautiful microlocs. Ladies and (gentlemen)enjoy your unique journey God bless you sis for what your doing. I’ve learned a lot from you trust me. 🥰🥰🥰🙏🏾

I love what you say about loctitians educating their clients. I’m barely a month old and had to learn a lot via YT videos like yours (kudos!!). I’ve had to go to a different loctitian. In a 20 minute consult I felt listened to, she gave tips, reassured me on a lot to expect for my kinda hair and we even scheduled my retightening. It’s a journey that needs explaining for each individual type of hair and person and believe me, that matters. I see comments saying BW shouldn’t care about length etc but I went from 13 inches to a bob in 3 days with instructions to not touch my hair. Even with research it’s a whole new and exciting yet kinda scary journey. I haven’t styled my hair and have it in a head wrap when I’m about to nap or work in the garden etc. So the videos helped and yet confused and speaking to someone who held my hair in her palms, looked at size, asked me questions, explained my level of shrinkage etc…that got me interested in styling and I’m much more confident having spoken to her Love from Nigeria 😁❤️

My hair was down the middle of my back when I got my install. First wash .. I had a nice ole bob 😂😂😂. I didn’t trip because I had shrinkage while I was a loose natural. So it made since that it would shrink during the locking phase I had tight corkscrew curls while loose. Curly hair shrinks. Now I had to battle some bunching. After that these Sisterlocks are giving!!! Almost 2yrs in!!!

With that been said, one can do their research and still fall short . There’s a lot of misinformation floating out there. Expectation management is a must for new sisters, like myself on this journey. It takes patience, self acceptance and learning how not to compare to what you see out there to rise above the challenges of growing your Locs . Speaking from my experience. I was used to the shrinkage, so I haven't been stressed about the shrinkage in my locs, lol. Brittany had me crying and feeling sorry for her and laughing at the same time 😢😂 I am glad that she found a good loctician and found what clicks for her. On another note, I want to keep my soft loc look and want to know how to do that? I don't want the dread loc look, if that makes sense.

I can appreciate the emotional state that she's in, but honestly, it seems that she did not research for herself. I have found plenty of helpful videos and info before starting the loc journey for myself and my daughter. Micro locs/sister locs have been around for a long time, but it has become popular now and with that many will jump on the wagon like its a fad instead of a lifestyle change and not be fully prepared for the entire investment. Much like when natural hair gained momentum, many women did it because it was the thing to do at the time, but later realized it wasn't for them and returned to relaxers... and that's ok too. It's all a personal choice that demands accountability. I'm glad she found someone to help her look and feel beautiful so that she can continue on this beautiful journey.

You locs are so bright, I like it. My dear sister, your comment is beautiful and selfless. It's a pity that people don't really pay attention to instructions, or understand that their hair will not necessarily look like that of their crush. Understanding their hair type too will enable them not to be so shock about the way it turn out. Adequate knowledge about loc will also help a lot. Your girl is a sensitive one.

The word journey is real. Locing and going through all of the stages teaches you so much about yourself, your insecurities, vanity and patience. I'm so greatful for my journey. For 2 years I thought of cutting them several times a week because my below mid back natural hair had shrank up to my shoulders. 6 years in I'm so in love with my hair, what it means *to me* and the patience that it's taught me.

You are right with the sharing of info. Also we see alot of locs on people with mid to high density but not much on low density. Also loctitians should put the age of the locs when they post pics along with the density so we know when we look at pics what to expect down the line. This makes you more informed. Also people must not look at a 3yr journey and expect when you start to look like that in 6months.

Early in my journey, I use to get small rollers and have a cute curly loc style. I didn't worry about length then (I started out with 4-6 inches). As it went through its stages early on in the first year, I just enjoyed the metamorphosis!

Poor baby 😢 I just started mine last week today and I was asking a million questions at my install😂 She welcomed every question and though I’m a little nervous about the journey, I needed to do something healthy with it. The shrinkage is so real though lol, but I have been bald headed for years on purpose lol. New subbie

It’s all about acceptance and loving yourself not the person society think you should be. I researched for over a year before my install. The major change for me was accepting my beauty as a loose natural after being relaxed all my life. Every transition is a process.

I’m just glad I grew up around strong women that embraced their natural hair and a few women that had traditional locs. So when I loc’d my hair the first time I had traditional locs for seven years. It was definitely a journey, learning experience, and some coming to Jesus moments. I now have my second set which is micro locs which is a year in now.

I felt her pain 😔, I stated to another YT that there’s not enough videos of after install and how your hair goes through stages 🤷🏾‍♀️. I neva blow dry my hair but instead of doing it damp, stylist dried it which I was amazed at my length (8yrs neva stretched)..anyways after wash 😱 and going thew chges I was jus like her 😭 ready to cut off ✂️. I researched for 3yrs settled wit braid Loc now I’m upset bcuz she made them too small and I’m combining frfr..🤷🏾‍♀️. I learned a lot from you and few others ☺️

I did a lot of research, watched tons of videos. You have to be ready for a certain lifestyle. When you decide that you want to have locs you should decide what type of locs you should get, & decide how long you would like to let it grow. You should know the ins and outs the pros and cons of what could take place. It’s not an easy fix so I definitely understand why loticians advise, starting with healthy hair , trimming your hair if needed. honestly, there’s a ton of videos where many people speak of the “ugly phase”. when I decided to go this direction with Microlocs I expected shrinkage, and I expected my Locs not to look the way I dreamt of them looking. I also knew that my loc journey was my loc journey, no one else’s and my hair would not look like anyone else’s. I would advise everyone thinking of starting a loc journey to do as much research as they can, and also go and speak to a professional lotician. For the record, 10 mos in & this is the best decision I’ve ever made for my hair but I’ve felt this way since day 1 and I understand everyone may not feel that way. you have to be ready for this transformation of your hair, your appearance etc. good luck to this young lady and thank you for your educational videos.

I feel like she just doesn’t like her hair, I started my locs 4 months ago and looked up countless videos and I was even confused about what interlocking was. Micro locs are superrrrrr time consuming and interlocking is a sure and committed way to get your hair to loc lol she’s looking for validation on whether everyone likes her locs or not because she doesn’t like them. Once the compliments start rolling in I’m sure she would change her mind. Her hair is beautiful

I started my loc journey almost seven months ago with waist-length hair, I was not ready for the shrinkage lol! My hair is just below my ears now but I am okay with that. I know it will grow back to waist-length. But the biggest issue is unraveling in the back, started with two-strand twists but has started interlocking the back so they will not come undone, it is helping. I am happy the young lady found someone to help her, she will be ok once she embraces the process. Thanks for the video information.

I loc’d my son when he was 8 (not micros) and I watched his hair go through so many changes. I’m talking about locs sticking up in odd places, growing in strange directions, stiff and hard. I’m saying his head looked crazy for some time. Then, his locs matured and talk about gorgeous healthy, soft and completely fitting for him. He loves his hair and I couldn’t imagine him any other way BUT that is NOT how it started lol.

If Brittany can cry on Tik Tok, she can research on KZfaq…like everyone else serious about getting locs did. There’s so much information available. She should have asked her loctitian about shrinkage. She has a good length of locs. Are you taking on new clients? My daughter has sisterlocs (has had them for 7 years)and she is moving home to MD in september. I’m looking for a loctitian for her.

I wont kid u. When i was starting out, not a lot of people had microlocs here in Kenya. And with my hair type, the shrinkage, my hair looked so weird. A friend told me that i ruined my hair. That was back in 2021. Self esteem was down for a while but i continued on with the journey cause i was determined and committed. I documented every moment but didnt take pics last year for other reasons. Now, my hair is dropping as i am getting closer to my 3 year mark. And that friend in question now wants this style cause my hair has grown so much that it amazes me. So i am so happy i stuck to the journey. Only regret is that i didnt start the journey earlier cause i am ok having one style on my hair which i can manipulate

I've been interlocking since 2004 (that's before KZfaq). The lady that started my locs explained that your hair is going to have ebbs and flows. I've even debt with a little hair loss on edges after having my baby (it will grow back). Fast forward my locs are past my waist. I moisture; wash my hair every two weeks; I use oil with cheba powder in it.

I haven’t gotten my hair loc yet because I want to feel fully informed and confident in my decision. My hair been natural for 10 years +, it’s low density, tightly coiled and fragile. So I fully expect shrinkage plus visible scalp. 2 years of research and I feel confident with my decision. The only thing I don’t want to deal with is certain people given there unwanted two cents opinions at my job. I have Afro clip ins and I did see a KZfaqr make loc clip ins. A few tracks could give me alittle extra volume. The shrinkage is just part of the locking process. I do wish I had loc’ed during lockdown thou. It is what it is These videos you make are really great I’ve learned alot.

I don't know what videos she was watching because the sistahs on the journey ABSOLUTELY discuss the shrinkage and expectations that come along with locking. The women on this platform have shared their successes, setbacks and frustrations with locking for almost a decade now, maybe even longer. She said she heard them say it but thought "they were just making it up". They told her what it was and she heard what she wanted to hear.

I've literally talked to people about what to expect with this journey. How to find the right stylist, that I brand and band and why (when I had to) and some of these women still go out and get micro/sisterlocs with someone who doesn't have proper credentials or training, then don't braid and band, etc etc... some folks don't really want help or to understand the process.
