One of the most significant sites in Washington state's history, Fort Steilacoom is a treasure to see. If was the first military outpost for the US in the territory and there are still a handful of buildings left from the first site. Today Fort Steilacoom is a history museum where guests of all ages can explore military life of enlisted soldiers, officers, the families of soldiers, civilians that worked for the garrison and those that visited from the community. The Fort Steilacoom site now offers a chance to see what life was like here in the mid 1800s and to experience the events that unfolded into the state we live in today. This virtual tour will take you through not only the buildings that make up Fort Steilacoom but also the history of the site. Come experience this FREE tour, ONLINE, and see inside the nooks and crannies of Fort Steilacoom.
This will be a live streamed event and you can ask questions and participate as we go along.
Live streamed at 8pm on October 5th.

It’s just the four remaining, two soldiers quarters, the commanding officer quarters, and the chaplain’s building.

So...where was the real place of execution?

Ok fanboy, of General August Kautz: compared to Governor Stevens he is a very moral man. Stevens was a self serving, fabricator of untruths & at least an enabler of murder, so ya a real piece of work. That said, how Kautz basically walked away from his indigenous wife & sons, to marry white women for (possibly love in Charlotte's case), but definitely influence & advancement opportunities as well; did not sit well with me. Placing those 1st two sons with different white families (where one son was treated as a hired hand) might have been a common practice; but writing of these children & their mother in the 3rd person in his journals...speaks volumes. Especially when compared with how he later recorded interactions with his white children. He definitely got more than he bargained for with his 3rd wife Fannie. Not even naming his indigenous sons in his will is pretty cold.

I think Kautz is a good example of a man trying to do the right thing and being a moral character, but I don’t think anybody is a paragon. I certainly wouldn’t use him as a compass of virtue in today’s society but I do think he was a good example for the 1860s. He could absolutely have done better by a lot of people, but I think he did incredibly well for his time. I use Kautz as an example against Stevens when looking at how the history of this site unfolded, but I agree with you that Kautz’s treatment of his family was cold.

Hey Arthur, would you shoot some resources over? I don’t think that info is accurate. Fort Spokane’s own site and the National Park’s service all list Fort Spokane as opening in 1880. I believe missionary Elkanah Walker wasn’t in the Spokane area until 1838. Washington wasn’t a territory until March of 1853 so it couldn’t have had a US fort in 1810.
