@Penguini

This type of lens adjustment is only possible with the pancake lenses, which have only recently become viable for VR headset production. Fresnel lenes, which are currently used, simply can’t. Luckily, it’s likely that all of the headset that are going to be announced within the next few months will have pancake lenses and this glasses adjustment system :). At least let’s hope, the leaks look promising though

because it's useless try dialing -2.25, not to mention there is no way to add cylinder and axial correction it's better to have no built in option for eyesight correction and save on cost for everyone than to have a version that will be useful to a very small number of people in practice but will cost extra for everyone and will inevitably complicate implementation of 3rd party custom made to prescription addons btw 3rd party made to prescription eyesight correction inserts are available for practically every vr headset on the market and they usually cost from 20$ to 80$ depending on prescription

Who the heck thought it was a good idea to put this in, if there isn't even IPD adjustment. You can get prescription lenses afterwards, but there is no way to adjust IPD, if it isn't included in the design

Mike said it perfectly: Who is this marketed towards? Not the casual market, that $499 price tag will not at all be appealing. For VR enthusiasts, the Quest 2 is a much better option for almost half the price. We'll have to wait for the full review to see if it has any redeeming qualities....

For a VR device designed purely for media consumption and potentially social interactions, the price tag is far too high in my opinion for this to become a commercially successful VR headset. Happy to be surprised if it does become successful but for what this headset is designed for and the price - I doubt this will succeed to be honest.

Totally agree. If it was priced competitively with the Quest 2, maybe an argument could be made for it. But even with something like desktop streaming as Mike said, I can't really see how this could justify its price increase over the Quest 2. Sad, I really wanted this to be killer, the Oculus needs competition.

@@Hellspawnxxx I don't for a second buy the idea of a $500 porn player being a huge successful product, especially when the oculus quest 2's standard strap is decently comfortable lying down. I doubt that this intended to be a dedicated porn display, and I doubt even more so that that interest in it for that will be sufficient to drive its sales to the point where this won't be yet another failure for HTC. I'd love to be wrong, I hope porn fanatics go out in droves to buy this thing so HTC can take the profits and make a good competitor in the standard VR space.

This reminds me of the Zip Drive, which was a piece of transitory technology bridging the gap between Floppy Disks and CDs. I read this as a personal TV and headset meant to be paired with your phone for consumer use. I don't expect this device will be around for very long, but I expect it will lead the way for the flood of VR/XR glasses that are coming in the next few years.

I love the idea that the Flow is designed for mindfulness. VR is amazing at that. But have they just created a very good lightweight device and then thought ‘right, who can we aim this at?’. Because the £499 price doesn’t seem to gel with the market they are aiming it at…or are they trying to aim it like an expensive smart watch aims at physical health enthusiasts

Thanks for the VR! HTC is trying to carve out a new use case for the industry, as it believes VR can help with mental well-being. If you think about it, HTC was the first to launch in the serious VR gaming space, taking all the risks. Then it was the first to launch in the VR for business space, taking all the risk and carving out a new market. Now it is launching in the mental well-being space, again taking all the risks, with all the previous customers upset at them. That’s the risk you take while innovating

if this can be used as a monitor replacement for things like a raspberry pi, besides a phone, I can see this being something to bring around for travel, considering that raspberri can run on 5 watts. IMO HTC seems to be trying to get more main stream consumers in VR. It's nice to see them make headset smaller but its not "VR 2.0" more of a "VR lite edition". A problem from my experience is that main stream consumers wont settle for anything lower that almost full fov, close to human eye resolution and some form of AR passthrough.. GL

This is nice, I don't play many games on my quest 2, I use it more for media, virtual tours and events. The price isn't too high and I think I'll pre order just to check it out.

Man if it could hook into a laptop to give me infinite monitors, and had a better resolution, it would be amazing. I dont know what use I would have for this as it is right now.

Looks like something I could use to introduce my wife to VR... baby steps 🤣 sucks about the whole iPhone thing, luckily I'm android, but seams like a big opportunity missed really as I'm guessing around half the world I'd iphone.... Still love the idea of VR becoming portable... watch this space 😁 Cheers Mike

This feels like Vive wants to fill a gap left behind in the casual, entry-level VR gadget market when Oculus Go and Google Daydream bowed out, and try to miniaturize it into a more appealing form factor for non-enthusiasts. Hopefully that price comes down quickly once the new tech in this headset has time to trickle into the rest of the market.

If it is good for watching media content like moves and so on, I would definitely consider this product. By good I mean the image quality have to good, it should be easy to use, and I do not want to have to pay extra fees just to be able to use the Flow.

if it can be used as monitor replacement, that would be a instant buy.

It can be used as a virtual desktop, not a proper monitor replacement. If anything you're better off buying a Quest 2 and Virtual Desktop, along with using the Link cable, for less than 500$.

I like the idea of a smaller, lighter, and much easier headset to jump into VR for content, and to just chill out and be mindful but I am afraid this headset is about 5-10 years too early.

Interesting concept, but I'm also iPhone user and lack of pc streaming are big minuses for me. If the resolution is good enough, it's very comfortable and light, and it can serve as pc monitor - it could be very useful for productivity and media consumption.

It would be great of the Vive flow could help us relax. However, can you really relax while staring at 2 lightbulbs. My Flow experience started yesterday, and it wasn't all that great neither. I've been stuck in the configuration process for roughly 2 hours, because I just couldn't configure my phone as a controller. I finally decided to use the controller device (one that I had as a bonus with my order, but didn't want to use at first). That surprisingly worked straightaway. While, that's like an extension of the actual product. By default you only have your phone as a controller. After going through the setup, all looked well, then found out that half of the video websites don't actually work with this device. Searched for hours, even installed a different webbrowser, just to learn that some website offer 360° content, but for some reason their video plugin doesnt work with the vive device. (Even though they explicitly claim that they support the vive flow). And then, 2nd day, some kind of error while launhing, been trying for 2 hours now to boot it, but it appears to be stuck while booting. Hmm ... maybe I need a different power source. I thought it was fully charged, but well perhaps it drained for some reason. It does seem to be very sensitive in regards to power sources, and that makes me wonder, why not just ship a charger along with the product to start with. Surprisingly my phone is connected with the headset even when the headset is turned off. However, it's kind of strange the the vive android app can't just show the battery level of the vive flow. That seems like the most basic feature you can imagine. As for software: yes very limited amount of apps, however, I am considering to buy a 360° camera, so that I'll be able to film while I'm on holiday, and then rewatch it on vive flow. I mean, at 450eur, you have to admit that this device isn't very expensive. It's not cheap neither, but it's acceptable.

Does it run Android? The glasses look ideal for business applications e.g. virtual meetings or virtual tours. I am a little disappointed though I expected this to support AR and compete with the HoloLens 2

Kinda disappointed they didn't go for some AR stuff, seems like it'd be perfect for it... Also, why not build the battery into the carrying case? That way they'd keep the lighter weight, but you wouldn't need an extra battery to attach to it all the time.

If it had an internal battery, I could see buying something like this for travel, just to watch stuff. Also since it's much lighter, I could see it being good for just laying in bed and watching movies in a virtual theater. But without the internal battery, and needing your phone, it sort of destroys the entire portability side of things. For what it is, it's way too big, way too limited and way too expensive.

@Only The truth eh quest 2 still seems like a cheaper better option for most people, I don't find myself doing anything in VR outside or in public, plus it's more expensive and that's pretty much it's only advantage and it do doesn't come with controllers or anything

If this headset excelled at providing a nice theater like experience, HTC could be tapping into something here. Even when things get back to normal, alot of people have begun to prefer watching new releases at home. If a headset concentrated on doing REALLY good theater experiences, they could easily tie that in with a subscription service set up by studios. The future I'd say.

What’s the benefit of this vs a Quest 2? Most of the meditation apps are on Quest 2 and is far cheaper and can do more. The only cool thing about this the form factor but once Oculus makes a similar form factor that’s it, it’s done.
