Brilliant insights from a well spoken former champion. It always gets me what an elusive and exclusive club the chess world champions are. Just 17 members over a period of 140 years, only six of them alive. Steinitz, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine, Euwe, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Tal, Petrosian, Spassky, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Carlsen, now Liren. And that’s it. Each of them a legend. How brilliant to be able to follow the thoughts of one of them over 100 minutes.

Mate, that is insane. I remember back in the 90's growing up and learning chess, my fellow club players and me, we could only dream of hearing an analysis from a GM, let alone from Vishy f*** Anand himself !!! Thank you very much! A 1800-Elo player :-)

Thank you. Probably Vishi is the best commentator of this match. The speed of how he grabs the key features of the position is spectacular. He always tries to explain really difficult things with simple words. The level of variants that were being shown by him are really top class. Also he tries to be very objective. He doesn’t always criticise, he tries to explain and to understand the decisions that were made throughout the games. The way how he explained the occurrence of the mistakes and relatively low level of the games is great. It was so interesting to listen to him not only in this video but during his live commentary of the match. True legend!

Carlsen and Kasparov were probably slightly stronger player than Anand, but when it comes to commentary, honest and profound insights, there is not even a comparison between the 3 of them, Vishy is by far the greater inspiration.

Only Bobby Fischer is better than anand. Kasparov fixes his matches and with magnus, don't forget neilsen switched sides to magnus before wc and reveal Anand's prep to him.

Also Vishy defeated carlsen many times, he lost because of age difference and not willing to play and winning so many championships

i think that Kasparov was indeed somewhat stronger, HOWEVER not by as much as their relative performance would indicate. i always had impression that Kasparov was Anand's "nemesis" somehow, that Anand tended to perform worse against him than against other players; as if he was intimidated by him, or something like that.

@@vishnusharma2958what kind of alternative universe were you looking at? Carlsen already has winning record against Anand - or everyone else really- a good few years before his first WCC. Of course Anand had winning record against Carlsen because Carlsen was up and coming and hadn’t reach his full potential early on. It happened on any sports, older player would have dominating record against new younger opponents until they adapt.

What a treasure Anand is and what a treasure this video is. Thankyou Sagar (and Chessbase India) for delivering the gold once again! Its morning here and time for work, but I had to watch at least the 1st game analysis. I will come back to this later and cherish the reminiscence of this great championship match with a great of the game.

The reason this championship was exciting because both players refused to play for boring draws. It was like chess 960 with no standard positions. This is how chess should be played to keep it interesting, and not follow the 25 - 30 conputer prepared moves. No matter what people say about quality of chess being played, this is how chess should be played to keep it alive. There was a reason why Tal used misplace a piece and let both players sought it out over the board. There was reason why Bobby Fischer introduced Fischerrandom. An and there was reason why he quit the chess altogether Full points to both Ian and Ding for playing this fantastic chess

If you really think they were not following 25-30 engine moves in the opening then you really know nothing about how high level chess is played. Quality of chess and the pursuit of perfection is more important than your stupid opinions.

A lot of good points, and I agree we had a fantastic match. I would still say that player are free of their style, as long as they respect the rules, and the opposition of styles and ideas are, among other things, what make the beauty of the game. Maybe Fischerrandom chess is still the way to go for the future, but with fighting players like those 2, classical chess has still a right to exist. We also had a few perles in Wijk aan Zee, each year. I wish more top tournaments with classical time control, both for classical chess and Fisherrandom.

Listening to this interview for first 15 mins one gets a sense that Vishy was probably rooting for Nepo to win. He doesn't take Ding's name even once while only narrating the games from Nepo's perspective. Quite interesting.

Vishy is vice chairman of FIDE and the chairman is Russian Arkady Dvorkovich. Definitely have to be supportive of Russian players if Vishy wants to be chairman in the future.

@@da96103 Not sure if it's chess politics or just plain love for one player over another. Maybe in some way he sees himself in Nepo with regards to playing style etc. We are all allowed to have personal favourites, after all.

@@da96103 Vishy will never do anything like that and your comment shows you have not followed chess for too long. It's common for GMs to analyse games from the perspective of the style closest to their own. Nepo is an intuitive, tactical player like Vishy who also relied on speed and intuition. Obviously Vishy is one of the all-time greats but stylistically they are similar. You'll often notice during commentary that positional players while commentating tend to speak from the perspective of the positional player at the board. That's because the commentator approaches the game in a similar way the player does. Also, Vishy spent some time with Ian after the latter won the Candidates last year in Madrid. As for Dvorkovich, Russian administrators do not have the same clout as before in Fide because of sanctions and the exodus of Russian players (several top Russian GMs have now switched federations). And Russian Chess Federation have now also left Europe and joined Asia. European federations have more voting clout during administrative elections than Asia. So wouldn't even make any sense for Vishy to align with Russian administrators at this point even if he has ambitions to become prez.

What I liked about Vishy in this interview is his appreciation of how interesting this match was. He understands this may be one of the last true great classical WC matches where many fascinating positions occurred thanks to the use of 'harmless' opening tries by Ding and Rapport team and main opening theory wasn't used as much, and so, that produced many thrilling games and that's why it was one of the most exciting WC matches to watch in recent history. It was also a clash of styles between the soviet positionally taught Nepo (even though he's known for his tactical vision as well) and Ding's very concrete calculating style. I believe Anand judges correctly that mistakes were going to be part of the deal with this clash of styles because they were getting such wild unbalanced positions where both players were out of prep earlier than in previous matches like Magnus vs Karjakin, Caruana or Nepo himself. I strongly believe if you had put Magnus, Caruana or Giri in those positions they would have all misplayed it as well. It's just that in their matches they were getting much drier positions! So ofc there were much less mistakes! Listening to these top GMs saying quality was poor in this match was ridiculous when they themselves don't play nearly as sharp as Ding or even Nepo usually play. I feel like Anand was much more understanding of the difficulty of being there live figuring it out without engine eval bar like Caruana or Giri had. Even Dubov was many times criticizing the play when he was commentating w/o eval bar and he himself was making as many mistakes as the players when suggesting moves! It was just funny to watch, he even proposed the move Qf5 after Rg6 that lost Nepo the game and the match lol! So yeah, much easier to criticize the play even for top GMs than acknowledge the wonderful absorbing games we got from this WC match. Very refreshing to listen to Vishy and his appreciation for this amazing match 👍🏻

Anand is really into it, his attitude is so much more positive on the current match than Kasparovs, who hadn't much more to say other than the usual "it's not a real world championship because Magnus is not playing" negative non sense..

Anand is not "one of the greatest" - he just is the greatest, full stop. This man still has a mind so sharp he could beat anyone on the planet, win any tournament, or even become champion again. He has been amazing for decades. Best ever.

Vishy has such interesting comments and expresses them so vividly and clearly that he makes a chess novice like me feel like I can understand at least a taste of the inner workings of the chess that was played in this match. And of course Sagar's inserts are what make the analysis possible for many of us to follow. I watched the whole thing again, and enjoyed it even more the second time. I had been guilty of ignoring Anand as a commentator in the past. I knew of his reputation for being an amiable gentleman, but because I also knew his reputation as a lightening speed natural genius in chess, I naturally assumed a dullard like me would get nothing from his explanations. Was I ever wrong. I think chess fans of all levels can learn a great deal from his explanations, and in the future I will tune in to see Anand above everyone else for chess commentary.

I really felt bad for Nepo, Imagine you scored too good in 2019 Candidates and preparing for WCC in 2020 which was held in 2021 and playing half of the matches very effectively and game 6 freezes him and coming back to reality and producing some best moves and winning 2022 candidates incredibly, and giving extraordinary fight in 2023 Championship and at last few seconds you came to know that you're losing at the end, the amount of preparation Nepo has put into this prestigious WCC would be priceless and no one can judge it. I hope he wins next Candidates and be the next World Champion and I think he is the deserving candidate.

Nepo was the better player in the classical phase. Clear winning chances in game 12 and 14 and that too with black. Also he was the one who won a classical game with black. But then he has this terrible habit of rushing his moves in winning positions and blunders. And he does that even when he is under no time pressure. Hikaru, Magnus and others have said the same about him. But that's Nepo. Against Magnus he had no chance to win the match but this was a massive choke from him I would say.

It is precisely that Nepo put an immense amount of prep in this tournament that makes Ding the more worthy champion. Because this is the Ding with less preparation, a smaller team, and his prep leaked, who managed to defeat that heavily prepped Nepo, with pure skill and nerves alone. This means Nepo has almost no shot at beating Ding again, now that Ding has the experience he lacked, and will probably be able to afford a larger team, and protect better his preparation from being leaked. As Magnus once said, Ding is stronger than Nepo, because he can calculate lines deeper.

@@williamshake7559 What I think is, there's no major preparations lines that were played in this WCC, most of the games are deviated from theory for either sides, which means that Ding chooses more offbeat openings to surprise Nepo. I think Nepo responded to Ding pretty well and Ding responded to Nepo's Spanish opening very excellently, I just feel bad for Nepo, and what I love about him is, he is intuition player rather than calculating lines deeply. Anyways Ding is the winner, and the better player wins.

@Arnab Majumdar I keep seeing people say Nepo was the better player or the better player in the classical portion and I can't understand it. Having more winning chances or having more winning positions doesn't make you a better player. If he was the better player in classical he would have won and it wouldn't have went to the tiebreaker. I think saying Nepo was the better player is disrespectful to Ding. The results show us that at that time, in classical they were evenly matched and is the faster time controls Ding was the better player. Nepo has a long history of getting winning positions and rushing his moves and blowing the win. Ding, the current World Champion, was the better player.
