A compression ratio is an important aspect of an engine. In theory higher the compression ratio, higher the thermal efficiency. Modern engines benefit from an incredibly high level of engineering and materials that achieving high compression ratio is possible even on a regular pump gas.
There are engines not only from the past which could not run high compression ratio simply because a specific fuel, such as a low octane one, would not allow it. And those are the engine we will talk about.

Engine capacity (displacement) to horsepower is a significant number for any engine. Imagine a "nervous" Italian sportscar with, say, 1,5 litres & 150 HP & a bigblock with, say, 7 litres & 270 HP, the former has 100 HP per litre, the latter a mere 38,5 HP per litre - which really makes it an agricultural machine...😎

Modern forced induction diesels are capable of generating almost 3 times as much torque with only two third of that displacement. And any modern naturally aspirated gasoline car can easily achieve over twice as much of that torque to displacement ratio. That's how far the technology has developed over the years.

Compression ratio was low back in the day but it helped with simplicity and longevity of these engines. Alot of them had exhaust manifolds attached to the intake to help vaporize the fuel and help burn off due to the lack of compression. Also some had low enough compression like tractors so they could be designed to run on kerosene!
@a64738
@a64738 2 жыл бұрын
Diesel engines that have much higher compression ratio then gasoline run perfectly fine on kerosene if you just mix in some 2 stroke oil (1:200 or so is recommended)... Have done it for 2 years now on 2 different modern turbo diesel cars to burn away old kerosene that now is illegal to use here for heating of a house if you have built in electricity.

@@a64738 Of course, kerosene is very similar to normal diesel fuel, and they have this wonderful property to self-ignite. This self-ignition must be avoided in spark-ignited engines, because this self-ignition (sometimes in the form of detonation) happens at completely the wrong moment (usually too early), leading to wear, or even destruction of the moving parts.

Love it, thanks for the vid! I used to work in a petrol station (UK term) or gas station (in US) when I was young - early 1970s - and we had a back-up diesel-powered generator for when there were power cuts (outages), which there often were back then, for all sorts of reasons (see British history in the '70s). It was a single cylinder, hand-cranked monster. You held a valve-lifter lever open with one hand while you cranked the beast with a huge handle. If you let go of the valve lifter before the flywheel was spinning fast enough you could break your hand/wrist/arm, whichever! When it 'caught' you could feel the ground shake. It was bolted to the concrete floor. But it did the job. I loved the sound of a huge single running at ? maybe 500 rpm. No one ever serviced it, or changed the oil even. No one knew when anyone had last done anything to it! You could put almost any fuel in it, paraffin/kerosene, petrol, diesel. I even - just for fun - added a mixture of engine oil, petrol, and paraffin, and it ran perfectly! Yet it ran ever time you needed it.

Compression RATIO is NOT actual compression (measured in PSI) the piston cannot build compression until all the valves in its cylinder are CLOSED. Watch the mate valves on the Benz; they're never open simultaneously at all; this builds more compression from a lower compression RATIO but severely limits RPM & HP. Compare that to a 60s & later valve-train where the intake valve[s] opens before the exhaust valve[s] closes (overlap) The more radical the cam the more overlap it has, which contributes to the "lope" associated with high lift/duration camshafts that allow the engine to rev higher but require a higher comp ratio to build equivalent compression. It's that lack of cam overlap and huge displacement that gives old engines that "juicier" sound even though the dynamic compression is about the same.
@daszieher
@daszieher 3 жыл бұрын
@@bhaggen although most of what you say is right, the dynamic compression is nowhere near the same. While there is more valve overlap in modern designs, it is nowhere near enough to allow for similar compression. Peak cylinder pressures are much higher today that they were before.

@@archygrey9093 The engineering that came out of World War II really helped the automotive world with better fuels that allowed higher compression ratios to be used. Metallurgy also took huge leaps ahead. The Ford 9N tractor of 1939 suffered from weak cast iron parts in its transmission and rear end. Compare it to the almost identical Ford 8N or 1948 and those weaknesses are now the strength of the design. The transmissions and rear end of the 8Ns could take far more horsepower input than the 1939 tractors and since the trans housing also acted as the rear tractor frame, could take greater stress from work loads.

Great video!!!! Love seeing the things I grew up around out at the farm, especially the hot bulb engine tractor! The thing about those old beasts was feeling them run more than hearing them! I can still feel the Thumping in my chest as that old tractor sat there idling! And the heat they threw out would make you sweat even on cool days! you can make a high compression flat head ford but you need to flip the intake and exhaust around to feed it. with the headers in the intake valley and carbs on the exhaust ports it's a silly looking engine that won a lot of drag racing trophy's in the day. you can do the same thing with a Buick nail head to overcome the small intake valves and a lot of drag racers did

@isaakwelch3451
@isaakwelch3451 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with a buick nailhead isn't small intake valves, its small exhaust. You flip the manifolds on a nailhead so the better breathing intakes become the exhaust, and then use forced induction to overcome the restrictive exhaust ports that are now your intake

Most engine design choices are based on fuel available at it's time. As we learned to refine oil more efficiently, it has required changes to design. Personally, I think the best fuel and optimized engines were in the early 60's. To the general public I mean. Fuel during WW2 was researched extensively, mostly for aircraft but other engines were designed like the infamous "this truck can run on aftershave" type of thing. Many farm tractors in the 30's were designed with a ratio of 6 or less. This was because deisel was not popular yet, and farmers wanted something that was dirt cheap and would keep and still work after winter. So they made "tractor fuel" and designed tractors to be able to use it. Some of it was so bad they had mini tanks for regular gas to get the engine started and then it could be switched over. There is ads/videos from Oliver about how they experimented in the 60's with high compression gas engines. Allis Chalmers made a fuel cell tractor. I love engines and mechanicals. It's important to understand the fuels for them as part of understanding the designs.

Lowest quality fuels, and lowest compression ratios, at least in the US, were in the period 1908 - 1920. At that time compression ratios of 4.5:1 were common, many makes of cars lowered their compression and the long stroke engine became popular for the first time. Previously a bore and stroke of 4 X 4 1/4" was common, later the long stroke 3X5" was used to accommodate the slow burning fuels. In the twenties fuels slowly improved, as the cracking process allowed making low grade fuel into higher grade fuel, the addition of tetra ethyl lead increased octane ratings, and the Ricardo combustion chamber allowed higher compression. Compression ratios slowly climbed above 5:1 and to around 6.5:1 by 1940.

Nice video. Just a quick note; the Ford Flathead was introduced in 1932, not '34, and, in the US market, anyways, hung around until 1953, not '55. The Ford Y-block overhead valve V8 was introduced in 1954 to replace the flathead.

It's been a long time since 125ccs have been caped to 15hp due to specific licenses. For 4 strokes 125, the Honda CB125 twin ranged from 16.5 to 17bhp, which is a record for a production bike if I'm not mistaken.

@@myass5964 Well, if you custom build everything, Honda made a 125cc 5 cylinder with a mere 25mm stroke. It made 34bhp at 20.500 rpm. It would barely idle at 17.000 rpm. Not something you would want to drive.
