This video is all about exploring Serbian handmaking traditions! I learned to make my favorite sour cherry pie with my 90-year-old Grandma, explored caves and rode gondolas in Zlatibor, visited a knitting village in Sirogojno, and took a traditional tapestry weaving class in Belgrade.

Very nice sample. But Grandma is the winner. Ninety, active and so cute! You are so lucky.

That was amazing fun! I remember that style of knitting from the 70s and am so glad I now have a name to go with it. Serbia has such a rich fibre art history and culture. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.

That was a great video! In high school we had a exchange student from Belgrade. I didn’t know they had a history of weaving similar to southern United States. Or knitting similar to Shetland! It looks like a great place to visit. Your mom and grandma seem like wonderful people you are so blessed to have both of them!

You can find sour cherries at the farmers market in NYC during a very short period in the summer. When cherries start appearing, keep an eye out for them. Also, you can find them in a jar year round at Kalustyans on Lexington in Manhattan.

They might not be exactly the same kind, but I fell in love with fresh sour cherries when I lived in Upstate New York! So, if you look at farmerʻs markets around NYC in June or July you may find some. Itʻs a short season, but they are delicious, like natureʻs sour patch kids.

How blessed you are to get to see your grandmother in her own country and learn so many wonderful things. My own grandmother passed many years ago, but she taught me many things from her British culture.

Here in the states, you are looking for Mint or envy pie cherries. Go over to the baking aisle, bottom shelf, and look for the canned pie cherries . . . NOT the cherry pie filling. Hope that helps....? Oh! I too am a huge fan of what we in the South call Cherry Clafoutie

As a textile person with Montenegrin roots - this was so cool to learn about! Thank you for sharing more. You've sparked my curiosity to dive deeper into learning about the heritage of fiber arts in the area. Are there any particular resources you've found super useful in your studies last semester? (I'll go through some of your previous videos too to see if you mention any!)

Interesting. Love the rug making. Have you tried the Theo Moouman style of weaving? (I most likely spelled her name wrong.) You can weave all sorts of shapes while you weave plain weave. The rug reminded me of weaving those shapes. Love your adventures.
