Which beach town is better ? Samara or Nosara ?
Costa Rica is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and two of the most popular destinations are Samara Beach and Nosara Beach. Both of these beaches are located on the Nicoya Peninsula in the Guanacaste province and offer a unique experience for visitors.
Beach Atmosphere: Samara Beach has a lively, family-friendly atmosphere with plenty of beachside restaurants, bars, and shops. The town of Samara is located just steps from the beach and offers a range of accommodations for visitors. On the other hand, Nosara Beach has a more laid-back and peaceful vibe. The beach is located in a secluded area, surrounded by lush jungle, and offers a quieter and more secluded experience.
Beach Activities: Both beaches offer a range of activities for visitors. Samara Beach is a great destination for water sports, including surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. The beach is also home to a coral reef that is great for snorkeling. Nosara Beach, on the other hand, is known for its world-class surf breaks, and is a popular destination for surfers of all levels. The beach is also great for hiking and wildlife viewing, with the nearby Nosara Wildlife Refuge offering the chance to see monkeys, sloths, and other exotic animals.
Beach Amenities: Samara Beach offers a range of amenities for visitors, including public restrooms, showers, and changing rooms. The beach is also lined with beachside restaurants and bars, making it easy to spend the whole day at the beach. Nosara Beach, on the other hand, has fewer amenities, with no beachside restaurants or bars. However, the beach is still well-equipped with public restrooms and showers.
Accommodations: Both Samara Beach and Nosara Beach offer a range of accommodations for visitors, including hotels, hostels, and vacation rentals. Samara Beach has a wider range of options, including luxury resorts, while Nosara Beach offers a more secluded and rustic experience, with eco-lodges and bungalows.
Choosing between the two will depend on your personal preferences, whether you're looking for a lively and family-friendly atmosphere or a secluded and peaceful getaway. Either way, you're sure to have an amazing time soaking up the sun and enjoying all that these beautiful beaches have to offer.

We visited Playa Samara. and it is truly a "beach town" experience ! Laid back atmosphere, with a wide beach and many restaurants & small hotels. This is NOT your typical "do everything" beach - but more of a "rest & enjoy nature" place. Thanks for the video, it brought back happy memories !

Thanks for visiting Samara (and pronouncing it correctly), as far as the Nosara area it's not Playa Nosara, It's Playa Guiones, that's the main beach. Playa Pelada is the second popular beach and area for people to visit. The actual beach called Playa Nosara is North of Pelada and isn't very popular. we've made a video to help people understand the 'Nosara' area as it can be confusing.

Hello @ TheDufresnes thank you for the comment, enunciation tests aside, you are technically correct! The “Playa Nosara” instead of “Playas de Nosara” colloquialism has a backstory and an overview of “ordenamiento territorial” can help you understand why locals and newcomers both may “fall into” using them interchangeably: Ticos have always referred to the area of the American Project (Proyecto Americano) in the plural sense as “Playas de Nosara”, this plural is meant to include the beaches you mention (Playa Nosara, Playa Guiones, Playa Pelada). Why do this? Because all these beaches fall within the district of Nosara proper. Linguistically it’s simply denoting the possessive equivalent of saying “The district’s beaches” where one of the beaches in question shares the same name as the district proper (Nosara). So, you can think of “Playas de Nosara” as “Beaches of the district of Nosara” (one of whom carries the same name). Now some potentially confusing bits you are correct to point out: 1) “Playas de Nosara” can sometimes or often be colloquialized to “Playa Nosara” (Singular) and confabulated with the district proper as well as any one or all of its beaches. 2) The “American Project” sits mostly in front of Playas Guiones and Pelada. So, although the original project sits within the district of Nosara, it is not really on Playa Nosara per se. Again, the district of Nosara and the Beach called Nosara being two separate things, one being contained within the other. 3) Possibly confusing as well is the local landmark hotel named “Nosara Beach Hotel” which is NOT located on Nosara beach, but rather is located between Punta Guiones and Playa Guiones. Again, all within the district of Nosara. This dynamic is not unusual and can be seen in the bordering district of Sámara as well. It includes several beaches such as Playas Buenavista and Barrigona, among others, but also has a specific beach, playa Sámara, which shares the same name as the district proper. Anyone who is visually inclined can peruse this tax valuation map for the district of Nosara from the Ministerio de Hacienda here: costaricalaw.com/wp-content/uploads/502_nicoya_nosara.pdf Thanks for commenting.

Hi Penny. Thank you for watching and your question. For surfing Samara is not as well known as Nosara and Nosara would have the bigger waves. However for beginning and boogie boarding I think you will find Samara very easy to maneuver. You can reach out to surf camps in both Samara and Nosara and get their perspectives depending on your particular requirements. For example in Samara you have www.patossurfingsamara.com/ and in Nosara nosaracrsurfschool.com/ They are both beautiful in different ways. I hope you visit both of them and then let us know what you thought of each one. Enjoy it !

I’m hoping that you can help us figure out how to deal with residency issues we are having with local lawyers (4 different lawyers who obviously don’t know how) that we’ve dealt with so far! They all have given us the same list to get their Canadian embassy to deal with. Unfortunately it’s been many months trying to get their Canadian embassy to acknowledge messages and emails! Just over 6 months actually!

There are several Canadian based document processing companies that have experience dealing with the Costa Rica Embassy. You should be able to do it yourself but if that is becoming a challenge then try one of those companies and have them give you time commitments before engaging them. Of course that involves additional costs for their services. I am not endorsing any of them so do your own due diligence. Here are some that come up: www.idocscanada.ca/faq/can-you-apostille-my-documents-at-the-embassy-of-costa-rica/ and www.alscanada.ca/costa-rica-wants-apostille-canada-authentication-legalization-find-out-the-why-and-how-from-the-experts-at-alsc/
