Fun fact, the murders in danganronpa v3 were actually all written by Takekuni Kitayama, a mystery novel writer who also wrote Danganronpa kirigiri.

This is very true! However the conceptualization of the murder scenarios was likely Kodaka's handiwork, as he was the main creative force behind the game - either that or it was a collaborative effort between the two of them (along with other staff), so while Kitayama gets the credit for actually charting out and penning the specifics and nitty-gritty details of the murders (and rightfully so), Kodaka still remains a significant contributing factor, creatively speaking.

While Umineko goes out of its' way to mention Schrodinger's Cat, Higurashi does so in a more subtle way. Since the GHD buries the village along with any evidence (similar to the Rokkenjima explosion incident) the idea of a "cat box" somewhat stands (even though characters like Ooishi are outsiders). I think that's why Rika, the true protagonist, is often equated to a cat.

I think that in Umineko is used in a better way since every fragment leads to the almost the same outcome, i.e. everybody on the island dying with only ange being left out from the catbox. The difference between them is only Eva surviving or not, but in either way Eva keeps the catbox closed since she doesn't tell the truth to anybody. In Higurashi instead we have often different actors in the different future and in the end Rika leaves the catbox alive. The catbox there is used as an expedient because Rika is being trapped in there, but its core principle is not totally respected since it is possible to open the catbox from the inside (in Umineko you can't, since everything has already happened)

@@Becix157 the main difference is that higurashi uses parallel worlds while umineko uses fiction. Eva always survives the Rokkenjima murders, all the games are retellings of the tale rather than alternative realities. The reason she dies in the first two was that the first two bottles were written by the culprit before they could put their plan in motion so they while they did know the game's rules they had no idea of what could be the outcome.

@@npc6817 i know, that's why I'm saying that i feel umineko's catbox more true to the schrodinger paradox itself. Because out of the schrodinger paradox the world itself exists, while inside the catbox of rokkenjima many different realities can co-exists but they cannot influence the real world (since they are mostly tales hiding the truth) Instead in higurashi what happens in each episode, since they are alternate realities, everything reflects upon the real world. For example the arcs when Oiishi survives or when he dies (Minagoroshi) are pretty different, and the final resolution (Matsuribayashi) totally changes everything. But this is because in higurashi the catbox is not such a central theme

I feel like umineko is intriguing in the way it takes the thought experiment and pushes it to the next level , transcending the physical into the epistemological realm of conceptual uncertainty , and the metanarratives play a role in constructing the catbox of roken island.

I can't even begin to explain how annoyed I've been at VNs and KZfaqrs using the PopSci definition of Schrodinger's cat. It's rare that someone actually gets the meaning correct. I'm glad you did here. I was hesitant to even click on the video because I was expecting the same tired misunderstanding of it.

Great video! Haven't seen a lot of in-depth analyses of VN themes like this. Would love to see your take on time travel, specifically time looping, in VNs; since that seems to be an oft-repeated theme as well.

SciADV sounds like a gigachad Great video essay. I'm a science person and indeed I feel Schrödinger's cat is overused. But still, some of them have genius uses of it like that one in Danganronpa.

Not only VNs but I noticed it in many light novels for explaining stuff like in To Aru Majutsu no Index to explain the Espers super natural powers abilities. Since the early 2010s, the cat explanation has fallen out of favor.

Spoilers for Zero Escape The whole deal is kinda my favorite plushie when it comes to Zero Escape, that I need to hold, otherwise I'll be too scared to watch xD. I just cant comprehend the idea, that my favorite characters are getting killed and all kinds of other gruesome things. That part still worked out fine in 999, but totally got destroyed in Virtues last reward. In Zero Time Dillemma its basically non existent and it becomes an interesting way how we perceive Akane and her actions. The thought of Sigma still waiting for his best friend at the end, not knowing she has found a new way of life and won't return to him, him being trapped in a body that isnt truly his, destined to die in only a few years, completly and uttetly alone, only surrounded by equally destroyed people... that fucking kills me. So yeah what I'm trying to say is: Akane is always right, there is only one outcome, no other dimensions and Quark, Tenmyouji, both Sigmas, Luna, Kyle and a few others still exist, dont ask me how, thats just how it is LET ME BE HAPPY ;-;
