The threat of #war has arrived in #Venezuela. The Bolivarian regime of Nicolás Maduro has deployed 5,000 men on the border with #Guyana and is threatening to invade the country. This has prompted VisualPolitik to ask a few questions:
How strong is Venezuela's military capacity? Could the Bolivarian armed forces really sustain an invasion and war effort? How much spark is there really in the armed wing of the Bolivarian revolution and what role do the massive Russian and Chinese arms purchases that the Chavista regime has made over the past two decades play? In this video we give you all the answers.

Venezuelan troops would need to travel by boat on the rivers that start in Venezuela because the terrain is too rugged and covered by the jungle to invade by land. They could go quite a way into Guyana that way, but maintaining a logistical supply chain would also be very difficult. A better option might be to drop paratroopers onto the airfield at some small town, capture it, and then fly in more troops since Guyana only has almost no military of its own. I am not optimistic that Venezuela can pull this off, and I think they know this, so this war will be mostly verbal unless the Venezuelan navy decides to get involved in harrassing attempts to build off-shore platforms in Guyanese waters.

@@CarlosPerez-em3wu The Venezuelan military could grab a number of small boats that could hold 10 or so soldiers each, then travel the 100 miles or so down the Cuyuni River till it hit the Essequibo River, and there is a small airfield there. Assuming they were able to travel 10 miles per hour (doubtful), this would be about a 10-hour trip, and the airfield on the map I saw was questionable as to whether it could handle larger troop-carrying aircraft like a C130. They would pass a number of small settlements on the river, so they might find the Guyana military waiting for them at the airfield when they finally got there. I pulled this up on Google Earth and I am not sure this river is even navigable the entire way, but it would be the only way to get to the airfield unless they dropped paratroopers, because it is solid jungle with no roads otherwise.

Its a very intereting question, on one end the military is arguably Venezuelas most well funded and strong sector. However, based on what we have seen in other far more powerfull and rich authoritarian regimes (see Russia and China) and how corruption has strongly crippleled and limited their military capabilities I cant in no way se Venezuela really being in any way prepare for any long term full force conflict. Specially a country who has struggle so strongly with upkeep of general infrastructure and the availability of food and other basic household goods. Those issues lead to corruption of selling and lack of capability of proper maintance of military goods. Additional the inherent geographical and climate of the area dificults the mantainance of such military goods. While all of this most recent armamamens are resonably modern, I feel any modern conflict would depend on the military capabilty and backing of Guayana really and their capability of extending the conflict to the point it strretches thin Venezuela supply chain support availability.

Poor training, bad maintenance, little to no logistical support, etc etc? How would they perform? They would probably make the Russians look professional. The caveat is that Guyana has almost not military capacity, Brazil doesn't really have the ability to project its own military outside its borders or support large-scale operations, and the US...well, who knows? I would have once said the US would obviously support Guyana against Venezuelan aggression, but then I thought it was a no-brainer for Ukraine. Russia weapons are cheap but still they function better than most western weapons. Look how hamas is still fighting up to today without getting almost any modern weapons(air defence system, precision missles etc.) but they are still standing to Israel with all the weapons USA has given them and the barbaric military tactics of carpet bombing. All the western weapons they are proud of you see they mean nothing in real war with countries like Russia, china, India and even smaller countries as long as they are given modern weapons to work with. All that matters is number of troops and military hardware as for the technology I'm sure it's 50/50

@@okellofrancis2218 That's amusing! Hamas isn't even fighting back, they're just hiding while Israel exterminates the Palestinians. And Ukraine barely has any weapons at all and they're still beating back Russia, who is numerically superior. Numbers of troops means nothing. The only thing that really matters is what you're fighting for. In the case of Israel, they're fighting to exterminate the Palestinian people, and that's exactly what they're doing. For Hamas, they attacked Israel to goad Israel into mass-murdering Palestinians for the silly purpose of making Israel look bad, and that's exactly what's happening. Neither Israel nor Hamas are acting righteous. In the case of Russia, they're fighting Ukraine to exterminate Ukrainians and steal Ukrainian's wealth to enrich Russian oligarchs. Ukrainians are fighting to prevent their wives from being raped and murdered and their children from becoming sex slaves in Russia. Which one here is righteous?

the colombiano89 well you have to think that invasion is the easy part, now the lets say 50 000 venezilian troops are in Essicreibo, now they have to estlabish bases so when they start to build or wait till they build bases then our long distance artillary will kill many venezulian solldiers as we will know their base coordinates from spies, our drones, and satillite help, plus many small ambushes by the Gdf, and venezulian have to travel on the two long distance roads so they will get ambushes here also an shelled by long diistance artillary, and most venezulian soldiers will have no one to fight yet loose men;so the longer the war goes on the more Guyana will prevail, but the elephant in the room is how Venezulia will supply the 50 000 troops in essicreibo? their boats will be sunk for sure and the slow moving big planes will be shot down or we can target the air fields, so venezuela army will for sure run out of food and ammo, but if you think I am wrong then tell me how.

Guyana's "disputed" territory is largely undeveloped, Maduro would need to launch a naval invasion to make real progress. And that runs a *huge* risk that a nearby US Naval Squadron just obliterates the Venezuelan Navy.

And considering taking on more manageable tasks with at least joint efforts with neighboring alleys and more set pieces, with white always going first, while most of the worlds freight going through the suez canal, after saudi arabia produces 9-12 million barrels of oil a day, and all the cocoa farmers toil away; with the most strategic objective and waypoint area?

The point is not to invade and defeat Guyana, its to prevent them from accessing those resources. I think sometimes in the west we look at numbers as a definitive view of what will happen. But we should all know, it's about politics both within and outside the nations in conflict. We should have learnt our lesson by now.... especially the US (which I bet are half of the people saying this would be possible) Nope, that would be a political and economic... strain, to say the least. So VN can simply threaten and scare off potential investors and that will do. Say what you will about VN, but that regime has survived brutal economic sanctions/ hardships, potential coups backed by international powers. No military is going be able to go in and easily subdue them... without investing a significant amount of resources for years in order to do so. And VN having the oil reserves that they do? It's not a long stretch to think they will get significant assistance from other nations to make sure that never happens. That's an economic potential any non western allied nation is bound to think about before aligning itself with any side

Ignorant people will believe ignorant things. Does Venezuela have the ability to invade ? Of course it does. Like all wars, many factors play a part here. Start with its terrain and then logistics could be a plus or a minus either way. Columbia's military fought FARC for years on end. The FARC were not well supplied, organized nor trained. Yet it was a long bloody war. Saudi Arabia and the UAE, spend hundreds of billions on weapons and lost to the Houthi who share sandal. (yes that is singular) Most believe what they are told to believe. Here we have a you tube video that shows the Venezuelan military as a joke with no funds no ability etc. It was not that hard to convince most who watched it that is the case. The truth is they have no idea just like those who made this Video. None of which are actually in the know on Venezuela's military abilities or lack there of.

Yes I do and most poor people in Western nations like in the U.S., Canada and Europe live better than a lot of people in Venezuela or the rest of the World. The U.S. alone spends more money in weapons than the rest of the world. Yet it has a lot of poor people in the inner cities, homelessness, drug addicts and the list goes on.
