As a Hungarian I have to say that the team improved a lot. The '16 3-3 with Portugal was a miracle, today there would be more chance to see a result like that, but the squad still lacks real depth. A 2nd or 3rd place group finish is realistic but if anything happens to key players like Kerkez, Orban or (ofc) Szoboszlai the team is going to be in trouble. The largest problem imo is the mentality of the team. Looking at the last two friendlies it really depends on the day how the players do. I would say Hungary is closest to a grayish-dark horse. If the day is given and everyone is in top shape they can win against (maybe even dominate) better teams but on others a goal conceded from Spain/France/etc. could fold them like a piece of paper.

I completely agree about Hungary btw. Szoboszlai has been fairly good for Liverpool this season even if he dropped off slightly in more recent months (injuries didn't help) but he plays like a man possessed for Hungary I think thats the difference between being a piece of the puzzle in a world class side alongside other creative talent like Trent, Salah and Mac Allister whereas for Hungary, he's by far and away their best player and he basically gets to do whatever he wants in a far more free roal than what he has to work with in Liverpools system

I don’t know if I’d fully pick Hungary as my dark horse, but they’ve been very consistent as of late, and get results. I do think with a few good performances they could get further than we might think. Very solid team that can put up a good fight on their day, though I do think they could definitely struggle if they went down vs a team like France, England, Spain, etc. A very interesting team for sure, and they’ll be one I have my eye on over the tournament.

So you said us Romanians will not qualify, I guess I should be encouraged by that lol. To be fair I don’t know how we have gotten these results lately (topping a group with Switzerland in it undefeated!) but we did and it fills me up with weird hope. If we can get these results who s to say we can’t put together a nice run? I mean, Greece 2004 and Portugal 2016 didn’t play very well either and they won the damn thing. Yeah, that is the ranking of our group on paper but you never really know, a draw or even win against Ukraine wouldn’t be a massive upset, maybe even Belgium falls apart like they have been doing at tournaments lately, maybe Slovakia can get a result as they are no slouches either etc. I think international football in general is wild lately. For as much as I have criticised the football played in the qualifiers the one major thing the current team has is that we don’t give up before the final whistle, so many other Romanian teams of the recent past would just give up as soon as they concede a goal or two but this one doesn’t, just look at that 2-2 against Switzerland or yesterday s friendly against Colombia (went from 3-0 down to 3-2 in like 10 minutes or so). In other news, Hungary getting that far would be insane but they have been really good last Euros so I get the thinking there. Germany is a weird one to predict too, maybe these last few friendlies have shown a resurgence or maybe they will fail once again and you will be slapping yourself for thinking they will reach the final lol. Injuries can have a massive effect too, have to wait until we are closer to the tournament for that. And last but not least, fair play to Georgia even though I don’t think it was as massive an upset as most people think, Greece isn’t exactly France or anything and Georgia has a few standout players, the other qualifiers deserve congratulations too (despite not having a shot on target the whole match, looking at you Poland lol)

Problem with our midfield is rather that not many of them have links with each other. But Frenkie de Jong, Reijnders, Koopmeiners, Xavi Simons, etc. are some of the best midfielders in their competitions. Our attacking positions are lacking though, compared to decades ago. The difference will be small between second snd third place in most groups, but i miss arguments to support your doubt that the Dutch team will be competetive. They have already performed very decent in the last 2 years (last 4 in Nations League, qualifying for Euro behind France ) with a team that was still young and rebuilding. But especially this last season many young players have had a breakthrough (Simons at Salzburg, Frimpong at Leverkusen, Reijnders at AC Milan, Koopmeiners at Atalanta, Ake at City, Micky van de Ven at Tottenham, Joey Veerman at PSV). Together with the established top players (Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong, Memphis Depay,) and a very deep pool of talent (Timber, Gakpo, de Ligt, Dumfries, Maatsen, Blind, Malen, Botman,.de Vrij, Weghorst) i dont see any comparison with Austria or Poland in terms of quality. It wouldnt even surprise me if the Dutch will challenge France for first place, as they definetely hsve shown some serious problems in their more recent matches.
