Vizhinjam International Seaport, the first transshipment hub in the Indian subcontinent, located in Kerala is in vigorous work mode to execute the berthing of the first container vessel to arrive at the port on the 15th of October. While the project falls under the government of Kerala, the private partner of the port is Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone.
But is Vizhinjam actually the first transshipment hub in the Indian sub-continent? Did the Indian sub-continent never have a transshipment hub before Vizhinjam? This episode of Cargo Tales will answer some of these questions and take you a few steps back in the history of transshipment.

Even in this article the city’s name is deliberately hidden. How come Vallarpadom is known as Cochin seaport but when it comes to Thiruvananthapuram it’s either Kerala Technopark or Shanghumugham Airport GFYS

Great Analysis!!! Highlights of the project..... First dedicated transhipment hub in our country. Project is beneficial for the entire country not only for Kerala. Once completed port can handle worlds largest container ships including 24,000 TEU ultra large container carriers of lengths near to half a kilometer. Minimum dredging requirements as the natural water depth near the coast is adequate for largest ships. International shipping route between Europe and South East Asia is just 10 Nmiles away. Envisaged cruise industry and also a naval base as the location is strategically important as the Chinese presence is already in Srilanka. Close proximity of NH,Airport and railway line. More than 50% of Indian cargoes are currently double handled from Colombo, Singapore and Dubai ports, our revenue is going to other countries. Green energy , employments, local business developments, land values in the state ,tourism, ring road developments..............envisaged Various CSR and other local developments are envisaged in the project and that should be implemented. However anyone from the project area affected his livelihood must be fairly compensated immediately irrespective of his community and political background.

It doesn't take away the Strategical advantage and the close proximity to the international sea channel of the vizhinjam port. So it doesn't matter if any port comes 100 times the size of vizhinjam anywhere in india

Also the improved highway connectivity as well as upcoming railway connectivity which connects Vizinjam to industrial centres in Tamil Nadu will play a major role in making Vizinjam economically viable port. Additionally Adani ports control of Haifa port and Kandla port will also play a major role.

This Kerala port is at extreme south and at least two similar ports are required on east and west coast. A proposed one on Gujarat Maharashtra border will do for the west coast but another one is required on east coast preferably. Linked to a dedicated transport corridor.

Sri Lanka is already at the limit of South Asian transhipment demand. Sri Lanka is very efficient, affordable, mature and very well managed. Sri Lanka is not constrained by geopolitical bagage that India have with it's neighbors. Furthermore, South Asia do not have a large volume of international goods trade.

Kochi only have 14 m depth even after severe dredging.... And vizhinjam has around 24 m naturally... No dreading needed.... The biggest ship can dock in vizhinjam...
