When my family were deciding what to watch in theatres, it came to a tie between Dolittle & Spies in Disguise, and I was the tie breaker, I chose Spies in Disguise and when we went to watch Dolittle at a later date, i was relieved that I chose spies in disguise instead.

To me, it had some of the same problems that Peter Rabbit had; both films are aware that they're coming out in a post-Paddington movies world, but they want to have it both ways, they want to emulate that whimsical tone of 60s-70s family films, but they still want the juvenile humour of the 2000s. Paddington had those jokes occasionally, God knows the first one's trailers made sure we didn't miss them, but the gentle tone of both movies were fairly consistent, unlike this film.
@jenniferschillig3768

Dolittle would have done well to follow the example of the Paddington movies and just focus on gentle whimsy, not all that self-consciously KEWL "humor."

Doctor Dolittle is just too difficult to do in a movie setting, it's story and set up are just too complicated and odd to cut down for a movie running time. It would be like trying to do something like The Lord of the Rings in just two hours, it's just not possible. Plus trying to create CGI effects to make animals "talk", plus CGI animals for the more dangerous scenes and the amount of actual animals on set to wrangle would be far too expensive to make a profit on a intellectual property that is just not world famous enough to be profitable. This is one of the things that led to the Rex Harrison version, back in 1967, to flop at the box office as no one knew what it was about and it cost way too much to make. It would be far better to do it as an comedic animated series and just to have fun with the premise and a series would allow them to explain WTF is going on to audiences. ;op

This NEVER looked like it was going to work. One thing I resented about the remakes is the very simple fact that it's DOLITTLE who talks to animals. WE don't! You DON'T need CGI to render talking animals. Okay, the Pushmi-Pullyu will require some work, and I understand (since I have NO desire to watch this thing) that they didn't even TRY! And I'm not the biggest fan of Downey anyway (although his Tony Stark/Iron Man IS definitive). Of course, the original isn't a great film either, but it DID have Rex Harrison singing "Talk to the Animals," which is still a cool song.

And it shows. "Dolittle" would have been a good movie if the execution worked. Which, unfortunately, it didn't. I could see glimmers of a good movie at points, but it is ruined by the terrible script and the painfully unfunny humor. I'm sad that good effects, great production and costume design, and a fantastic cast(which the film thankfully had all those) were all destroyed by a such a lousy script. It's with no doubt, one of the most disappointing films I have ever seen. And that really is saying something.

@@Hewylewis Exactly! I would have liked to see the film, as it was, without any of the poor executive choices that Universal added in(which caused the film to get the January release date it had, and, more importantly, got the film the terrible critical reception it had.). I would have been curious to see if the unedited version of the film was the one that came out. It probably would have kept its original April 2019 release date. Yes, it would have had to compete with "Avengers: Endgame"(which also had Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland!), and it would have had only two weeks to really make a big impact. But the film would have had a better fit release date, and more importantly, it would have gotten better reviews from critics. I wouldn't say the reviews would have been good, but it would more... ...mixed(kind of the reception films like "Detective Pikachu" and the recent "Sonic the Hedgehog" film got.). Nothing special, but nothing bad either. What we got was a film that was messed around with by Universal executives, a very unencouraging January release date, and dreadful reviews from critics. That's pretty sad.
