You want a good movie about a disabled guy who starts off not really caring, then gets an assistant who helps him make the best of it? Try the French movie The Intouchables (no, I didn't misspell that). It delves much better into the friendship between the guy and the assistant and is very heartwarming, unlike this movie with its generic romance and godawful ending.

I don't know how much interaction you have with disabled people, Sean, so as a disabled person, I can assure you that there are VERY few of us who are angry enough or miserable enough at our conditions to want to end our lives. Granted, some disabled people can be very angry with their lot in life, I've met a few such people, but I've never met anyone who actively wanted to die rather than live disabled.

Kinda like this one ad for Autism Speaks I found where a woman talks about how she contemplates driving off the road with her autistic daughter and killing both of them right in front of said-daughter. I ended up feeling more sympathy for the girl (when I was most likely supposed to feel for the mom) because she would be growing up in an environment where at least one of her parents is thinking about killing her (and one day might) and she'd likely get none of the support or help that she'd need.

LegalAssassin Don't even get me started on autism speaks. They don't even think autistic people have feelings and are aware of stuff like that but autistic people ARE! UGH. It's a horrible thing to say in front of your child and I really hope she apologized to her.

Good review and great job explaining the Unfortunate Implications. I got one thing I should point out, however, which is the "confined to a wheelchair" sentence. I bring this up because many people who use wheelchairs find them to be liberating rather than confining, as they allow the user more freedom of movement then they would normally get on their own or from crutches or walkers and the most limitation they encounter is from lack of accomodation (ex. a building with no ramps or elevators). Granted, this likely works differently with quadriplegia (and as I'm not quadriplegic myself, I will not touch on something I don't know a lot about), but my point on the sentence overall still stands. This is not meant to be an attack on you; I'm only pointing this out because it's a common misunderstanding (and one I've admittedly fallen into before).

Me Before You is a true magical love story. The director and the actors turn Will's sad life into a story that is both difficult and vibrant. So much energy and mood flows from the screen. The looks, gestures, smiles of Emilia and Sam inspire and restore faith in goodness in people. Thanks for the wonderful movie!

If anyone's interested in watching movies about paraplegics, I recently saw The Diving Bell and the Butterfly which is a story about Jean-Dominque Bauby who was the former editor for Elle. He suffered a stroke that left him almost completely paralyzed except for the use of his left eye. The movie (and book) follows his life in the rehab hospital and details how he coped with his condition. It's in French but if you can find it with subtitles, I recommend it.

I haven't seen this movie and don't watch romances... but for some reason this entire thing makes me angry. I'm in chronic pain, not disabled but my nerves are screwed up to the point that they hurt all the time and I need painkillers. It sounds like this movie is basically telling the audience "being disabled/in pain is the worst thing ever, end your life!" Just, fucking wow. I can't believe this even became a thing.

5:15-5:51 Okay, to me, the way they portrayed him wasn't the best. But him being filthy rich and his parents helping is not the reason he became depressed. It's him no longer doing sports nor doing simple tasks like feeding himself, getting dressed or bathing. The one thing have tho give this movie credit is the portrayal of the parents of the main characters. It would've been so easy for the working-class parents do not like the rich male love interest because they would think he's too snobby while the guy's parents would be such stereotypical snobs, they only hire the young woman as a hired hand and would not approve their romantic relationships, especially the fact she's from a much lower class. They care for their son's well being and how they portrayed the parents is realistic. However, combined the fact the guy cannot do the simplest tasks, him going through so much pain, despite the fact we don't see that much, and sees himself asa burden toward parents, this would affect him emotionally. And for his whole suicidal thing, I wished it was left out.

I saw the trailer for this film, and thought it might look decent. Only problem was, the trailer was too vague about what it was about besides DERP ROMANCE. I went on Wikipedia and read the synopsis for the book. I got halfway through before I said "Are you KIDDING me?" and decided to skip it. Also, I hadn't thought about Sean's point about him being rich. Yeah, if I was paraplegic, and also filthy stinking rich, I think I could find a lot of ways to enjoy life. Not saying it still wouldn't be hard at all, but I think I'd count my blessings at least.

HenryvKeiper ive heard a lot of people with disabilities hated this movie since it feels like disability is a curse. I would have given benefit of the doubt if it was the character's pov but the whole movie is misleading. if you want to show a better story with a guy with disability, watch speechless. it shows a guy just living with a disability and not cursing on how his life is a curse .

@HenryvKeiper I know that this is a small thing but Will is a quadriplegic not paraplegic. A quadriplegic is someone that has lost feeling in all four limbs while a paraplegic is someone that has lost feeling in two limbs (typically their legs)

The author has said it was inspired by a news story she saw where a man (he was sporty, but I forget what sport he did) and his parents went to Switzerland to perform an assisted suicide. There wasn't a love story attached to the news story, however. That was Moyes's (author) addition.

I've heard very mixed things about the book. On the one hand, I've heard a ton of people gush about it and say it's beautiful and the saddest book they've ever read. On the other, I've also heard people say it's very ableist. I do find it troubling that the whole female character's point is to get Will to see life is worth living, and yet he kills himself anyways. But then the point is supposed to be that he shows HER how to "live boldly"? So a disabled person has to die so the girl can learn A Very Important Lesson? That's just dumb. I mean, I wouldn't blame Will for being depressed, but dude, he is rich as FUCK. A LOT of disabled people can't afford the luxuries that he has! Hell, even if they want assisted suicide they can't afford to fly to freaking Switzerland! I do not understand the message this movie and book is trying to convey. Maybe it just wanted an excuse to be sad. Sounds emotionally manipulative, honestly.

Switzerland does indeed have doctirs who will assist you in suicide should you have certain kinds of illnesses and decide that you want to end life on your own terms. The Netherlands are also going in that direction and here in Germany this debate is coming up on a regular basis, with more and more people demanding that we give people like the protagonist of this movie to end their life if they want to and that the state shouldn't have any business denying them that. There is a movie about this subject with Javier Bardem which is based on a real case of a guy in Spain who became quadriplegic and wanted to die. Personally I tend to terminally ill peoples needs and from what I have seen so far I can only say that I would rather off myself than having to go through what these people have to endure. You're better of dying in some stupid accident which may hurt but will be over relatively fast than being confined to a bed, only having memories of better days, knowing that death is coming slowly all the while having to endure tremendous amounts of pain and in the worst case even losing yourself in the process. I know some people have very strong beliefs when it comes to upholding life no matter what the cost but I can completely understand anyone who'd rather die than having to go through that kind of suffering.

Switzerland actually does have an assisted suicide facility, which is pretty disturbing. I was considering seeing this because of the actors, since most of them are pretty decent, but your review's solidified that this isn't something I should pay money for. I can probably watch something on Hallmark at 2 am if I want to cry.

"Telling disabled people to go ahead and die already so us able bodied people can get on with our lives." Almost sounds like this movie was directed by Iain Duncan Smith. I'll save you the Google search, he's almost the UK equivalent of Donald Trump, but with disabled people instead of minorities.

Honestly I'm not a romance kind of person. I don't get gushy over movies like this. B u t honestly the movie would be better if the guy had something like a terminal disease, I think that was why The Faults in our stars worked so well. Because the time together between the two lovers was limited. This story, the guy is rich and in a wheel chair. Can't he get a new leg that's made out of metal? I mean he's rich. So...the movie is kinda meh.

I’m so pissed off at my husband for begging me to watch this, and then he sneakily put it on this morning while I was waking up drinking my coffee. The movie sucks you in from the beginning, Lou is absolutely adorable. Everything was predictable, as you stated from a romance genre. At first I was thinking Beauty and the Beast. Anyway, long story short... This movie has ruined my day. It seriously wrecked me emotionally on so many levels. Why my husband thought I would like this movie, is beyond me?! Probably, because he wanted to see me miserable for the rest of the day 🤔🤬 Of course I started a rant, while crying on how awful this movie is after it ended. Everything you said in this review came out of my mouth to. This guy had a beautiful girl, that adored him, loving parents, and people in his life that loved him. I haven’t been this pissed since the movie Titanic ended! Not going there! 🙄 It gave the impression that people with disabilities, quadriplegics lives were not worth living. Wrong! Life is a journey, and Lou was ready to live it with him. This movie would have been amazing, if at the end he had his parents come in so they could be there when he asked her to marry him, and that he had changed his mind. Just saying! They could have had children, there are ways today to have made that happen. Bad movie, very, very bad.
