Yes, this sink deserves a video all its own! This 1927 Standard cast iron sink is six feet two inches long, about 300 pounds, and has a beautiful eight inch apron. It came out of a barn in Astoria, Oregon in 2012, and we stored it until ready to refinish it for our house. We used the Bathworks refinishing kit and our opinions are free without reimbursement from the company. We literally designed our kitchen and the entire house around this sink. I think you will see why! Enjoy!

I was grazing my goats in our woods and literally stumbled upon a castiron porcelain sink similar to this one, circa 1923, I think? If I'm reading the numbers on the bottom correctly. This video was super helpful in teaching me how to go about restoring it as we remodel our farmhouse kitchen! Thanks so much!

Slowly but surely... Being a 1920’s inspired kitchen, it’s going to be a lot more “furniture based” and less installed cabinetry. There will be some installed uppers.

Mike Rutter Thanks! Please check out our first house update video where we go over our house plans in detail! We did stay very true to those original plans, only making a few changes on the fly. While we’re flattered that you like our plans, really take the time to evaluate every place you ever lived. What did you like about those places? What drove you crazy? That’s how we came up with our plan. Think about what furniture you have. A lot of our window spacing is based on the ability to fit a particular piece of furniture against the wall. Of course, we try and minimize hallways as we consider them a waste of space. Best of luck and happy building! Thanks for watching!

That’s s heck of a deal. Around here I can bet that sink would have listed for $300 easy and could bring more at auction. I hope that paint holds up but I don’t think you need hope cause you did good preparation. That is always the issue with the getting a lasting product ( especially when used in a bath ).

Yes me too. Looks great as long as the top coat remains good. Was it some type of epoxy coating or just a conventional enamel paint?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 6 жыл бұрын
We too are curious how it will hold up. We know it won’t be as durable as the original porcelain, but as long as we show some due care and avoid dropping stuff on it, we hope it will last for a while. It is a two-part product, but not an epoxy. It seems to be an acrylic polymer as per the SDS.

I finished the cow videos.....and since kitchen work is on our to do list watched this video. That sink is a treasure on so many levels. History gives our lives flavor and I bet you will think of the families that washed dishes or cleaned produce or visited around a table with family, family that valued the beauty and working character of this sink. Okay I rambled a tad but its so beautiful. You did a breathtaking restoration. How are you finding it to use now your home?

Still love our sink! It really does feel like a family member, and I have imagined all those before us who used it! I still love the size of it and the faucet we chose. I did find two little scratches in the basin, and so added a white dish pan on the left side of the drain and a white rubber mat on the right side of the drain, so both in the basin. Makes dish washing a lot easier to manage. Glad you are enjoying our videos! Thanks!

First of all, y'all are wonderful! I feel like our family could learn tons from you!!! We are in the middle of a complete home renovation! We bought a 1938 on 7.5 acres and the entire house was un-livable (kinda still is... we're getting there little by little) anyway! I bought a sink just like yours but with 2 basins and not near as big of an apron. it has a big chip in the bottom of one basin... it's actually more like a shatter. I'll need to chip away the loose pieces and sand in smooth. I have done a crazy amount of research and most of the reviews of other products say they peel and flake. I was wondering if you could give me a review on how yours held up? It looks like y'all really took your time with the prep (the most important part) so I would imagine it is doing great! Thanks in advance and sorry for the book!

Tate &Bugs so far the sink has held up really well. That said, we know the current finish isn’t as durable as the original, so we do take care to avoid dropping things in it and such. We also have rubbermaid sink pads in the bowl for extra protection. All in all, we’re very satisfied with the product we used and it is holding up as expected. Thanks for watching!

The NYC ndn We just found ours on Craigslist. You might also check with some Architectural Salvage stores (That’s where we found our bathroom sink and claw foot tub) So far, the refinishing we did has held up well. It’s not as durable as the original porcelain, but we knew that going into it. You just have to be careful to not drop hard and/or sharp things into the bowl. Not that you would want to do that with porcelain anyway... Good luck!

Great video! Question... you mentioned the expensive alternative of taking the sink to Spokane... would that have been to have it re-enameled? I have a great double bowl enamel sink that is just stained and dull... was looking into options when I found your video. Thanks!
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 6 жыл бұрын
Kathleen Donohue we spent $100 on supplies, the option in Spokane (spokanepermaceram.com) was $500 for our size and we would have to take it there (two 2 hr round trips). They say “Perma Ceram is a patented, confidential formula and process that has the same molecular structure and makeup as that of porcelain manufactured today.” We have been happy thus far but I think I have one small scratch in the sink basin. I plan to put in a rubber type mat in the bottom soon. Good luck!!!

Use some powdered cleaner (The stuff that comes in a cardboard can). Damp the surface, sprinkle on and keep it damp with a spritzer for 30 min or so to let the bleach do its work. Scrub with a scotchbrite pad/ rag then rinse. If its already dull, you wont scratch your enamel any worse. The original enamel can be cleaned this way indefinitely whereas you can never clean your recoated fixture this aggressively. Repeat if it still has staining.

Great work. I don’t think those kits ever work however. I would have patched the chipped areas and painted only those areas and wet sanded the whole sink then buffed. The shipped arrears were outside the usable area so really only cosmetic.

Hey there! Thanks to your video I got the confidence to buy an old drain board sink and refinish it. It will save me so much instead of buying a new reproduction. I have a few questions: Did you sand again after the chemical etcher? Did you paint the same day you put down the printer? How many coats of the paint didn’t you apply? And if more than one, how long did you wait between coats? Thank you!
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, let's see what I can remember: I think we wet sanded again after the etcher, we did primer right after prep and then painting the same day once primer was dry, two coats of paint while still wet. Here are the instructions: bath-works.net/getdocument?c34c42b5-4ecf-48dc-b19c-3b8cc8d0000c

So far, it has held up well. But, we recognize it for what it is. We're careful, only cleaning it with the recommended cleaners, and we never drop stuff into the sink bowl. Since it is only one compartment sink, we have a small rubbermaid dish pan on one side to put the dirty dishes into. The bowl is big enough that the other half is open for rinsing or filling things. Works out great! Thanks for watching!

the etcher is like limescale remover or what?

Some sort of acid. It was from the same manufacturer as the coating. I definitely think it helped.

Where did you find a 6" faucet?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Our sink is an 8” OC faucet. Backsplash mount faucets are usually available through restaurant supply stores. Thanks for watching!

I’m not sure of the exact formulation, but it was a product offered by the same company that made all the other stuff needed to do the refinishing.

What happened to the 1920's windows?🤔
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 5 жыл бұрын
Ha! Yes! We did opt for commercial vinyl windows since Stacy's brother made them in Spokane. Otherwise we would have looked at rehabbing some wood windows, getting some new wood windows. I actually learned how to completely rebuild wood windows and doors as part of my Historic Preservation training. Thanks for question!

Can I ask how the finish has held up?
@vnthomas16
@vnthomas16 4 жыл бұрын
apcolleen it’s been holding up great! That said, we take some precautions, such as avoiding dropping things in the bowl or using caustic cleaners. Although I imagine you should probably do that even if you had the original porcelain finish. No complaint here!

Why didn't you show how you hooked up the faucet to the water supply in the back of the sink? I have the farmhouse sink and the faucet but the faucet connection to the water supply in the back of the sink has me stumped.

On this particular sink, we just attached dog ear elbows to the wall behind the sink, and then used pipe nipples to attach the faucet. We have a few othe backsplash sinks, and the easiest is just buying the faucet from a restaurant supply store with the appropriate backsplash mounting kit and close elbows. Thanks for watching!

Yup, you heard that right. Just a little 1” wildland hose with GHT fittings. Seems prudent for a home that heats with wood. Thanks for watching!
