the chemistry between andrew and robin de jesus is unreal. we so rarely get to see such good male-male friendship chemistry. they made the lifelong friendship feel so legit. just fantastic.

you were totally right in how they shot the scene! they recorded their vocals normally in the studio and then danced and lip synced “as fast as humanely possible” according to lin manuel (you can see their rehearsals in a btw clip) then slowed it down in post. they must’ve been exhausted lol

Even more so, each section of the song was filmed at a faster pace. They started at like +25% and the last part is +75% speed, so they basically are moving almost twice as fast as we actually see

I don't know if you're already planning on this but you should react to Green Green Dress (bonus version) by Andrew Garfield and Alexandra Shipp. It's a song that was cut from the film but you can still listen to it

FYI - the "we're movin' on up" bit of lyric was lifted from "The Jeffersons" TV show theme song (CBS, 1975-85). The program was about an African American family that moved into a swanky NYC high-rise.

I just loveeee the lighting in “No More,” bc it takes you to the grimy, dirtiness of their apartment, and then jumps you to the brightness and lightness of his new place, which really matches up with what they’re singing. I feel like Johnathan Larson would’ve loved seeing this movie!
@kinocrone7275
@kinocrone7275 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the three more melodic sections were filmed with them lip syncing at three different speeds, each faster than the next, so that when they played it at normal speed it would be increasingly slower, yet still matched the song. It's one of my favorite sequences of the film
@larasampaio3947

When we film in slow motion, we use a faster version of the song, like 1.25X speed, for example. And the singers have to do everything in high speed, including singing. In post-production, we slow it down editing, which gives the smoothness of slow motion, but the song is in normal speed and all matches

5:57 - This is my favorite part of this song. And Larson didn't really write the music and lyric to this tiny part of the song. He pays homage to a part of every Gen X and earlier generation with sampling a bit of the theme song for the classic TV sitcom 'The Jeffersons' which begins with the lyrics "We're moving on up/ To the East Side/ To a deluxe apartment in the sky...". The big difference is the original sounds more like a soul-gospel hybrid (the show ran from 1975 to 1985). It's just a bit of pop-culture nostalgia that Joanthan Larson (himself a Gen-X'er born in 1960) would play with. They did a 'Live' recast of a 'The Jeffersons' episode and Jennifer Hudson sang the theme for it...here it is, just to show you how it originally was supposed to sound. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aLeEnKSe29_Lc2g.html

The slow down effect is something they also use a lot in Glee. You’ll start noticing it more now haha. (They almost use it too much lol). Basically when recording they’ll roll the playback at the faster rate live and then slow it back down in post. In this number the choruses are filmed at 1.25x, then 1.5x, and lastly at 1.75x speed for the grand finale! Love this scene!

I recently listened to the song on it's own and I love it. This film made me love musicals and I absolutely would love Andrew Garfield to do more musicals. This,Therapy, and 30/90 are 100% my favorite songs from the film. While Green Green Dress is my general favorite song from Tick Tick Boom, more specifically the Andrew Garfield sang bonus track

Basically what we do if we want to film it in slow Motion we speed up the songs like 2x and then we train them to say the song faster. So it gives a good cinematic&dreamy feel.

I just saw no one (at least near the top) explained it. But you more or less nailed it. When filming it, you play the audio at 1.5 or 2x and sing at that faster speed (and dance at that faster speed). You then slow it down in editing back to a "normal" speed, which creates that slow-mo, almost ethereal, dancing while the mouths/audio are normal.

I think the dance move Robin does on the line “we’re movin’ on up” (before they do The Carlton 😆) was a nod to 96,000 from In The Heights 🤔

Yeah, for that particular slo mo effect it's called undercranking in film. The framerate on the camera is set to go slower than the standard 24 per second. So if your moving at normal speed while being filmed, boom! Slo mo. Only in this case they sped up the tempo of the music while filming it, so from the audience pov the music tempo is the same, but the movement has that floaty feel. The opposite effect is overcranking to make something look sped up, they use that for action scenes, but also musical related for Audrey II scenes in the movie version of Little Shop of Horrors.

Yes, they speed the song and dance moves up on set so that when they play it normally it's slow mo. If you want to see how it's done there is a really good behind the scenes for the Backstreet Boys song Incomplete that shows them filming sped up for the slow mo in the music video

I don't know if that was the case, but I remember listening to a podcast with the cast of glee and they said that when they filmed those scenes in slow motion the music was sped up. Then they filmed the scene while lip-syncing the fast-paced song.

I really really like your content but I have to say, 2 minutes of promotion plus a 30-second interruption in a video under ten minutes is crazy. It totally destroys the pacing and makes me feel like I’m being deceived by the runtime when 20%-50% of it is contentless self-promotion. And 50% isn’t an exaggeration. I just watched a not-quite-4-minute-long video of yours and at least half of it was just self-promotion. I have no problem with artist getting sponsored, promoting their Patreon, plugging their other content, etc., but I’m not even going to watch the promo stuff if it ruins the experience of watching the actual content. I’m going to skip through it and get annoyed. All of that said, I genuinely do like your reactions and insights.
