This is a vocal coach reaction to a LEGENDARY cover: ‪@HomeFreeGuys‬ and ‪@AviKaplanMusic‬'s Ring of Fire. There's something really special when the biggest artists on the internet come together in such a heart-warming way like this. I can absolutely understand why you guys asked for this - it's beautiful, exciting, classic and modern all at the same time. And the Battle of the Basses...wow!

Hi coach Phil! Home Free added that reggae touch to the song, making it their own. They sang it in the Sing Off competition, and it definitely solidified their position there (they won the season!). This song got me hooked on HF! 💖🎆😍 Home Free doesn't just do country, they have a wide variety of genres, and love to have fun with their music, check Country Fried Pop Medley, All About That Bass, the Butts Remix, I Swear (just s few). They also hit on meaningful topics, where One Voice, Everybody Walkin' This Land, Traveling Soldier are just examples. They really are fantastic!! 🎶🔥💖 Names: Adam Rupp (beatboxer) - Tim Foust (bass) - Adam Chance (baritone/bass - goes by Chance) - Rob Lundquist (tenor) - Austin Brown (high tenor). Chance replaced Chris Rupp a few years ago. Tim and Austin also wrote or co-wrote several amazing songs, and lately Chance started showing his own too. Great reaction, please, keep them coming!

Hey Alex :) Ahh! I picked one of Alex's favourites! That's awesome :) It sounds like all of the different genres they do (while still staying true to their sound) is a large part of why we like them so much. Hope you're keeping well, Alex! Have a fun day :)

By continually interrupting the song you miss things. One of the things you missed was exactly how long Tim held that last note. Oh, I'm not sure Avi was taking his hat off to Tim, it looked more like he was changing to a cowboy hat to show conversion to country.

The judge on the “Sing- Off said “Did I just hear a cappella country reggae?” So yes, Adam Rupp did something very different. But that is the usual for him. Also, Tim, Avi & Geoff (VoicePlay) are friends and help each other out. React to Home Free “Champagne Tastes on a Beer Budget” that Tim wrote. HINT: Watch out for Avi - you saw his hat change in this video. Thanks for your reaction

This was about the time when Avi was going solo. That beanie fit in with the Pentatonix vibe, but he was headed toward a more folk music sound, so this marked a transition for him. He's been good friends with Tim and the two have learned from each other. It's heartwarming to see how, when you hear of musicians acting like spoiled divas, to see a group of musicians who don't seem to have that kind of hangup get together as friends and put out great music.

Avi Kaplan is a solo singer-songwriter now. Reactors, vocal coaches etc in the U.K. compare him to Rag N Bone Man or Hozier. Most of what he sings are his own original compositions (15 released and 7 additional performed but not released yet) but he is covered alot by bass singers in particular. "The Summit" and "Aberdeen" along with "Change On the Rise" are the most popular for that. The only 3 songs he has formally covered in his solo work are "House of the Rising Son", "Hey Ya!" and "Lean On Me". If you want the whole American a cappella community one of your next should be Peter Hollens. He and Avi did a cover of "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" that is gorgeous. Additional bands would be Street Corner Symphony and The Collective which are very interconnected as well. Homefree's baritone Adam Chance used to sing with Streetcorner and Kaleb Thomas Jones of the Collective is now in Avi Kaplan's band. Both Streetcorner Symphony and the Collective came together to backup Avi when he first started singing again in 2019 and Daniel Ellsworth of Streetcorner Symphony has a co-writing credit on 2 of Avi's songs, "I'll Get By" and "Sweet Adeline pt 2". All of those singers plus Avi and Austin and Tim Foust of Homefree live in Nashville, Tennessee now. Everyone I mentioned including Peter Hollens was also on the television competition show The Sing-Off for acappella over the 2nd, 3rd and 4th seasons. A very tight community.

Hey Gail :) Thanks so much for the history. Yeah, I knew that they'd come out of The Sing-Off. Peter talks about how it got him 0 popularity when he was trying to be a full-time singer, so it's interesting that performances from the show are such a hit with Home Free audiences. Have a fun day :)

@@CoverCoach Peter was in the season before and with a group. I never saw Peter Hollens performance or for that matter any of the Sing-Off when it was on TV. Not my thing. All of it was captured by "Mrduckbear11" and came in handy as a research source while in quarantine and looking for something to do. It was quite fascinating. Ben Bram being involved was a definite advantage to Pentatonix on the show and Avi had his own admirers throughout the California acappella community in particular bass singers always being in short supply.

While this is the "Sing-Off" lineup, the addition of Kaplan provides a preview to HF's current sound. The baritone in this video, Chris Rupp, left the group in 2016. Adam Chance, his replacement, is a bass-baritone whose range is roughly from F1 to F5. That means he covers the bass when Foust sings lead.

You've barely scratched the surface of Home Free's music. 3 of them are song writers so there are lots of originals as well as covers. Tim Foust (bass) has a 5+ octave range. The beatboxer (Adam Rupp) is incomparable (and also has an impressive vocal range). They're all vocal chameleons and sing everything from goofy to gospel and have collaborated with such legends as Kenny Rogers, the Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Charlie Daniels, Don McLean & Lee Greenwood.

I don't know if anyone in the 100+ comments mentioned this, but at the end, Avi wasn't taking off his hat in deference to Tim. It was a joke move that he took off his iconic (at the time) knit beanie and replaced it with a cowboy hat. And now that I'm commenting a year after you posted this reaction, I can recommend that you check out Avi's newest album, an 11-song, all-original album that was released May 20 this year, a day before his US tour started. All 11 songs are great, but 2 good starters are "I'm Only Getting Started" and "When I'm a Fool" (that one for the bass). But a bigger suggestion would be that you watch and maybe react to the solo version of a duet he co-wrote and performed with Grammy-winning Joy Williams - "All is Well" done in a church in Utrecht, Netherlands a few months ago while on his European tour. The natural resonance of his voice is enhanced by the acoustics of the building. A stunning piece. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbSalaRyz6yYhJs.html

Hey :) I LOVE that you have this list! What a great way to keep track of songs. Will definitely be giving some of these a look. I first watched Pentatonix when they released their Evolution of Music piece. At the time, I was learning to write orchestral music, so I loved that they included classical stuff :) Have a fun day!

Pentatonix has a lot of good songs. I really like their version of Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. It turned out original.

Tim helped Avi with the growl technique but not with the subharmonic technique. Tim and Avi don't use the subharmonic technique. I asked Avi in a livestream and he said that he is trying to learn the subharmonic technique but we never heard him doing it. Hopefully one day

Avi doesn't use subharmonics according to him. He does growl aka use fire-breathing for a couple of his lowest notes. Neither does Tim Foust use subharmonics that's Geoff Castelluci' thing and some of the upcoming basses like Tomi.

Wow! Three videos in a row and no sign of the nerd goggles! You might be cool enough now to go to a club... Keep going. I know you're planning more Pentatonix, but if you're diggin' on beatboxers extra heavy, check out Voiceplay's Moana Medley. Layne put in the work on that one! Cheers!

Hey Norman :) Haha! And I'd been calling them glasses...definitely 'music nerd goggles' from now on! But you're right mate, the goggles must make a come-back! Sounds like a great suggestion! Hope you're keeping well mate!

Hi Phil. Good reaction to Home Free and Ari! Will you react to Citizen Queen? They're a great, all-women (even the beatboxer!) a cappella group that works with Pentatonix. Their most popular video is a cover medley, "Evolution of Girl Groups" (21M views), but their individual covers of "Señorita" and "No Tears Left to Cry" are also excellent and successful (over a million views each.) Do you also take requests for covers with music, or only a cappella? Btw, you have an interesting niche for your channel: channel growth + making great covers. 👍

While Avi and Tim are certainly good friends, I'm thinking the black cowboy hat was done as respect to Johnny Cash, aka the Man in Black.

Avi doesn't need to take his hat off to anyone. He is in my opinion superior to Tim though Tim is good. Avi has a much superior, weighty Basso sound to Tim. His resonance is better than any one I have heard. You really should react to some of Avi's solo work. He produces Americana Folk, Nature Boy work.

If you want this channel to take off you're going to have to work on your pause timing and what you think is really relevant to discuss during those pauses. If it were to stay as is it would be very frustrating for viewers and not likely promote subscribing. Just my opinion.
