Lashana Lynch, the actress who plays Miss Honey, has actually not done musical theater, which I was so shocked to find out, cuz yeah her voice is so perfect for it. She said she used to sing before she started acting and wanted to keep the two separated when she was younger.

Everytime someone makes the "why don't they just tell their parents" argument my brain immediately goes: "yeah cause when a six year old tells me their teacher throws students by their hair over the fence and locks them in a box with spikes on the inside, I'm soooo going to believe that and not think its their imagination"

That's actually a point in the book. The Trunchbull is over the top and cartoony on her abuse precisely so it wouldn't seem believable were any child to tell

I had a teacher in 2nd grade like Mrs trunchbull. She slammed me up against the lockers and dumped kids desks on the floor and gave them like 30 seconds to pick everything up. Thankfully my parents believed me and talked to the principal and she was super nice after that.

So much more tension and peril in this than in the live-action version with Danny Devito and Mara Wilson. Anxiety, depression, dissociation, power linked to rage-serious Carrie origin story vibes. Even knowing the ending, more than once I felt like Matilda was going to get seriously hurt or killed in the end…😢
@isasscoralick
@isasscoralick Жыл бұрын
Yes! In the 1996 movie, Matilda also draws her power from rage ("Yell at me, dad!") but the Netflix musical made me feel more tense, like I was living in fear along with the kids (and Miss Honey). This is not a negative review, by the way -- abuse and neglect are dark af and should be portrayed as such, especially in a musical since so many people think musicals are 100% joyful dancing. I think this one has a good balance
@RabbitsFunWorld
@RabbitsFunWorld Жыл бұрын
Yeah. My mom and I were actually discussing the musical vs Devito’s film tonight. She and I actually like both movies, but the musical more. Simply because it’s more realistic, not so focused on comedy. We believe Danny loosely based the film on the book, but made it more light and comical, so that families can watch it. Whereas the musical, stage and movie, focuses more on reality/trauma, the creative mind of a child, and the psychic link/telekinesis. I say psychic link because Matilda didn’t create that story out of nowhere. The more she became friends with Miss Honey, that emotional and mental connection between each other grew stronger. She could feel Miss Honey’s story, whenever Miss Honey thought of her parents or her step-aunt.

Partially because they made it a more fantasy-like setting.The DeVito movie had magic too, but this one feels more like a fairy tale.

They did so well with this adaptation. And the ending is so sweet. Obviously something they could not have done with the stage musical, so they used the film medium quite well. And the final song is so dear, I love their voices mingling together.

I've cried from end to end watching this. As soon as they start singing "when I grow up" I cry. I think because... I get emotional seeing this kids imagining life being great, amazing, perfect and fun and found all the things you wanna do when you grow up, then we cut to miss Honey and we see that that's not gonna be true for everyone. And it breaks my heart a little because I think I've lost so much hope and... Just fun? comparing to when I was a kid. I just don't feel like that anymore.

11:10 Remember she started to tell the story after she met Miss Honey. It's like she was getting Miss Honey's story in stages because it was sent to her through messages from Miss Honey without Miss Honey realising it. Though some wonder if Magnus in this movie had telekinesis as well because of when the bucket was crushed when Matilda got up to that part of the story, and if he's sending Matilda the message instead from beyond.

The movie has set really high expectations for being in Matilda, I just had my first rehearsal today and we had a read-through (I got the role of the Acrobat) along with practising the Miracle song. if you ever listen to the west end recording of 'when i grow up' when they sing the tile line in chord harmony is chefs kiss. with all the chord for kids to hit the sharps. They left out a few songs like pathetic loud telly, and dropped the brother from the movie story. school song the bit at the gate is a nod to the stage show. YOU MUST SEE IT ON STAGE. Roald Dahl, the author, a lot of his kids books are really really quite dark. Personally I think their huge popularity is because of how he doesn't shy away from putting darkness in his whimsy. Other books of his include Charlie and the chocolate factory, James and the giant peach, and the witches. I've also come across an anthology of short horror stories he wrote for adults.

I think the idea is, with the Trunchbull, that even though other parents love their kids, that the Over The Top behaviour she exhibits is just TOO crazy to be believed. After all, kids have BIG imaginations. The story was written by an English Author, based around the English education system. Sadly, theres this idea, that only recently started getting questioned, that if kids say something that sounds outlandish, it has to be false. There are very few Miss Honeys in the UK's education system, and more Trunchbulls than you might imagine, because kids are constantly told their feelings aren't really valid, and that no one will actually believe them, if they try to tell people their school is bad.

It's like that here in the us. Well when I went to school in the little town of Ottawa, ks. I was the only fully black girl in my school. And summer school of my 7th year, the other kids beat me up and called me things like "ugly useless piece of $h!t" or "hey little bastard, where's your daddy at? Didn't wanna take care of you no more? (Because I was born without my parents being married to each other and my dad still lives in IL where I'm originally from. ) and then they pushed me into the street while a big GMC truck was coming. Don't worry I ran out just in time. But when the teacher opened the doors to start class, and when I tried to tell her what happened she had the audacity to say "well, we weren't there to see it so we can't really do anything about it". Yet I have been threatened with three day detention all because I was pushed by eighth graders in the eighth grade wing coming out of class and that in effect caused me to accidentally bumped into this white girl and the white girl bumped into the lockers. She then blames me and said I did it on purpose. Then a teacher got involved and said to me "if we look at the cameras and see that you pushed her into lockers, you're looking to serve three day detention"
