Dave Pensado reveals his distinctive processing techniques that add width, presence and depth to a lead vocal.
We’re back at Studios La Fabrique for another chapter featuring the prestigious team of Dave Pensado and Jaycen Joshua! Together the pair tackle the mix of ‘Playa’ by Carol Souki, with Jaycen building its foundations and Dave polishing the vocals. We hit the ground running with Joshua getting straight to the essentials of enhancing clarity, separation, and overall impact of the material. He cycles through all parts of the session, comments on the tracks, and instinctively starts to carve, compress, gate, and more. Using common plug-ins and straightforward techniques, Jaycen remarkably transforms the mix to sound louder and more detailed while maintaining a voltage almost identical to that of the rough. Pensado then takes the wheel for an in-depth demonstration on how to craft an “expensive” sounding female pop vocal. You’ll learn how he alters levels for intelligibility and emotion, layers effects, applies modulation as pitch correction, and much more!

Absolute legend. I've learned and stored so many tips from Dave. That parallel comp to push the middle will be a super useful method to add to my workflow! Adding width to a vocal through a selection of a chorus or doubler, short reverbs, slapback delays can really take a vocal over the top. I always have a Dimension D send, a short vocal room reverb send, and a slapback delay send to mix and match to give vocals some width and depth!

parallel compression. fastest attack and medium release almost infinite treshhold to squash the signal almost like a limiter. now you have squashed the transients so only the mids and lows are left and you blend this with the dry signal. In order to create width Dave Pensado uses short stereo delays and short reverbs, or a longer reverb that is gated so that you hear only the first part that is really wide and than the tail is shut off by the gate inside the plugin (I'm talking about the Symphony reverb at 2:55 ) The J thing is a parallel compression completely dry done with CLA 76 and the L1 limiter after it. This is something that also Andrew Scheps does every time. The main vocal is sent not only to fx but also to a dry parallel to keep the center focussed!
