I absolutely love your style of reacting and analysing, Christi, you are sincere, highly knowledgeable and passionate, especially when reacting to Dimash. I believe he is actually singing live here. I'm fairly sure the Tokyo Jazz Festival prides itself on the authenticity that artists present and perform their pieces. Jazz is, if nothing else, improvisational, organic, it is essentially live and raw although with modern technology, the rawness is smoothed away 😉

I'm a native Japanese speaker. I can tell you that Dimash's mouth, tongue and teeth positions were singing in Japanese on live. He doesn't speak Japanese so he needed a note to help just in case. Please check IKANAIDE reaction on Kamichika Voice Channel. He explained how Japanese and English or other languages pronunciations are different so none Japanese speakers to sing in Japanese is very very difficult. Also, he mentioned that moment Dimash looked at the note and that moment was the perfect Japanese pronunciation. I agree with him. Anyway, Dimash's Japanese was near perfect in this singing with lot of emotions and sadness. I think he sang IKANAIDE better than most Japanese singers. Thanks for reacting to Dimash.

japanese language commenters have noted that dimash sang the song live for the festival, which apparently participants are asked to do. and they heaped praises for his interpretation of the song, and how the song captures a truly japanese flavor that most foreign singers fail to capture. the lyricist of "ikanaide" no less has been on record saying that it was the first time he ever heard "ikanaide" sung beautifully in japanese. he especially points out the expressiveness in dimash's voice, how he captured the meaning of the words, and got the emotions between the lines. other japanese language commenters also were amazed at the freedom with which dimash sang the song in japanese, reflecting how he has internalized the song so well. most of the japanese language commenters also noted how dimash sang in perfect japanese, considering that japanese is a difficult language to learn for non-native speakers.

There were also performances outside, one by a lake if I recall. I don't think one can simply assume that it's live because some Japanese people say it is. All recording is done live yet often the video and vocal are done separately. We will never know unless he discloses and it's not really important. As you said, his interpretation was excellent

Likewise I truly think this was live. He has sung the same song with different lyrics in Chinese and might need a refresher as to which vowel and sound is place where in this Japanese version. It's hard enough to sing in a language you don't know but on the same music? Muscle memory and habit might trigger a fatal pronunciation mistake. I am so grateful to hear his voice without the distraction of a crowd, pristine with no microphone filter. Tyvm for your analysis: it helps me appreciate even more how talented a crafter he is and understand why we have this knee-jerk reaction to his singing.

The MC of Tokyo Jazz Festival introduced Dimash’s performance as “MV” while other artists performances were introduced as “live performance”. It means his performance was prerecorded and possibly edited though he sang live at the time of recording of this performance. As Japanese, I can confirm that his Japanese were perfect and many Japanese reactors and the lyricist praised his performance.

@@timtam4670 maybe because when he was singing, they took the video and put post-production on it?. so like a MV. apparently there were 2 cameramen used to produce this. so he was singing live with 2 cameras on him, and edited (post-production) it for this event.

This is the first time he sang in Japanese. You're right that he's very prepared so I assumed he was just quickly checking the words to make sure he got it right, not so much the music. You asked what we thought about whether he was singing live during the recording. I know other reactors have said this was lipsynced. Dimash said in an interview that it was a live recording so I think that's pretty definitive, although I'm sure there was some post-editing. Dimash is a master of the mic and he doesn't always use a pop filter so not having one doesn't really help the debate one way or the other. I won't be offended if anyone disagrees or I’m proven wrong. Regardless, this was one of his most beautiful and skillful performances and I continue to listen to it over and over. Thanks for the reaction and insightful analysis.

This is not a recording, this is a live sound .Dimash is performing a song in Japanese for the fist time , so he looks at the words

I think I watch somewhere (in Japanese) that Dimash said it was live recoding. In fact the crew from Japan also mentioned they flew to Kazakhstan to record this video with 2 cameramen, then did minimal post production before airing it. Everyone involved just in awe and couldn’t believe when they saw Dimash singing. There were heaps of praises during the tv show. The setting is pretty straightforward: studio, mic, music playback and cameras but the magic here is his voice.

This is the first time he has sung Ikanaide - the origional japanese version of this song, that i know of. I mean im sure he practiced before this shoot lol- but dont assume this is a song he is so familiar with THIS version that he has no need of sheet music or whatever reminder is on the stand- it might be the words in phonetics or something? He HAS performed this song multiple times as the chinese Autumn strong prior to this- but that has its own lyrics! Ive been told it can be very hard to relearn a song you know in another language where you have to deprogram yourself and sing it in a new way. Im pretty positive this is a live shoot. Only times he has ever dubed is like live russian TV where he has had no choice a few times. I think that is just a great mic and Dimash is good enough to not need a pop filter. Nobody else has suggested it wasnt live- including top class opera singer reactors etc. I also think with all the close ups and subtle changes in tone and colour, it would be imposible to do a good job of dubbing it anyway.

Thank you so much for your perseverance reacting to Dimash 🙏❤️ I swear Dimash breath has notes. And they harmonise with the notes he's actually singing. It's just so gorgeous. And yes, his voice is still developing, his tone gets richer in every register. To me he no longer sounds like he's doing different voices, it's much more unified. As for this video, it's possible that they used more than one take, but the vocals were recorded live. You can tell when he looks at the score he relaxes his pronunciation bc he's not focusing on it so much. That would be really hard to lipsynch. Also the camera crew have said they were completely stunned by his singing when they were filming this. A Japanese reactor has pointed out that Dimash pronounces the consonants very softly, as is correct for Japanese. This could also be why they chose to omit a pop filter so they could get all the little breath sounds, without too much risk of clipping. The reason he looks at the lyrics is probably that he's so used to singing the Chinese version, which has a different meaning & emotion. Like you said he conveys this feeling of longing so beautifully. To me that's where he really shines, even more than his spectacular vocal abilities ❤️

You're the first reactor I've heard questioning whether he's singing this live or not. While there may have been several takes to get different camera angles it's clear he's singing live because you can hear every breath you can hear the consonants etc. This was recorded live. You can see it in his tongue placement and watching his throat. Also the lack of post-production is clear here. Also this is the first song he has recorded in Japanese and my feeling is he has the music there for reference should he need it.

Dimash performed this song on the TV show I AM A SINGER in 2017, but in Chinese. It was the first time he sang a song in Chinese and the audience cried during the performance. So he knows this song very well and lives it.

From what I’ve heard, with the proliferation of KZfaq reaction channels, so many people are watching Dimash’s new music there, instead of on his official channel. So the official channel, because it is a big source of revenue for Dimash, was not making enough money, especially during a pandemic when he couldn’t tour. I believe there is a period of time after which it is easier to get videos through, I don’t know if it is related to the number of views that are happening on the original channel. I have seen other people talk about this so there are actual rules out there but it’s not very wide spread. So now many reactors and vocal coaches are saying “please go watch the official video on Dimash’s channel, too, the link is in my description- he needs his numbers and we need our numbers, this way everybody wins”. KZfaq is just one platform he uses for English speaking fans. Platforms like Weibo and such cater to much larger fan-bases in regions where English is not the first language.

This was another very enjoyable reaction and analysis. This is quickly becoming one if not the favorite Dimash performance for me, and it invokes a very visceral response in me, just as "Ave Maria" did. I believe this actually was a live performance in that Dimash sang "Ikanaide" live for the Tokyo Jazz Festival Live stream in January of 2021 as it was being recorded. According to several native Japanese speakers, Dimash's pronunciation of the lyrics is nearly flawless. One native speaker, who gave a detailed analysis, stated that he is "expressing Japanese more (better) than Japanese" and that he does not only perfectly pronounce Japanese but "expresses Japanese…with Japanese emotion.". Goro Matsui, who wrote the lyrics to "Ikanaide," posted on his Twitter account that he has never heard a foreigner sing in Japanese in such a beautiful way. Tamaki Kōji composed the music and performed the song in 1989. "Ikanaide" became the title song for the Chinese-Japanese TV series "Farewell, Li Xianglan," filmed that year. It is the story of Yoshiko Yamaguchi, a beloved Chinese-born Japanese actress and singer during World War II who hid her Japanese heritage under the name Li XIanglan. Following the war, when the Chinese became aware of her Japanese heritage, she was accused of being a spy and sentenced to death by firing squad for treason and collaboration with the Japanese; she had been involved in the production of Japanese propaganda films. Thanks to the intervention of influential friends, she was cleared of all charges but urged to leave China or risk being lynched. She resettled in Japan, where she would continue to enjoy a successful acting career. In the 1950s, she moved her acting career to Hollywood and Broadway under the name Shirley Yamaguchi but returned to Japan in 1959, retiring from acting. She would go on to become a TV presenter and eventually a politician. She did not return to China for nearly 20 years. In 1990, "Ikanaide" was translated into Cantonese and sung by Jacky Cheung using the same melody. Later, the song was rewritten and translated for Jacky Cheung to Mandarin under the title "Late Autumn." In 2004 the Taiwanese singer Terry Lin adapted the song into a new version titled "In Deep Autumn," with lyrics written by Daryl Yao. Dimash chose the 2004 Taiwanese version arranged by Terry Lin with Mandarin lyrics for his performance at the 2017 "I Am A Singer" competition but gave it his own interpretation and titled it "Autumn Strong." This song went on to earn Dimash the "Best Foreign Singer" award during the Golden Melody Award in Hong Kong. If I am not mistaken, he was busy with series of shows in China when he has done this performance. I happened to watched the live presentation of this show by Tokyo Jazz and the camera angle shown that time was all close up. After around 20 minutes, the video was taken down and replaced with this one. What I heard is that the cameramen who filmed this performance were so amazed by him. A reactor by the name ZEUS was the only one who was able to react to the video which was actually shown during the live program of Tokyo Jazz.

Yes. I heard the fairy dust. To me this is his best ever. His mastery over every thing he did in this one is mind blowing. The feelings and emotions he gets out of this song is extraordinary. Masteful. Your imagry of a painter is apt. Are we watching the Da Vinci of the singing world and we are alive to witness it. How amazing.

Hi Christie, great & insightful reaction. Thanks! This is such a masterpiece by Dimash, I love it! As for me, I tend to think Dimash is always singing live when he uses his hands to paint the story, to flow on the notes, to conduct him self during the song. Some of these live songs have a post production filter used (and are mistaken for lip syncing). And some songs at tv productions are not live at all. Whatever may be the case, I don't mind for I love his music.

His absolute powerful and unshakable presence on stage, compared by some to a god of music, sometimes to a prince or king, the energy he absorbs from the Universe, then how he anchors himself to the Earth, his connection with the Divinity, all at a place, it gives him the strength and confidence to "command the audience, to order the orchestra, to order the song", so that everything comes out the way he wants and how Dimash feels, that is unique. All these qualities are only at Dimash, absolutely. The goosebumps and hypnosis induced by Dimash are the characteristics of his concerts and appearance on stage, which are shaped by his endless beauty, sometimes translucent, sometimes sensual, sometimes angelic !!! Dimash is storm, thunder, lightning, sun, rain, smile, but also love and last but not least he is our hope and our daily light, he is our spiritual food when you put your head on the pillow and start dreaming like tomorrow it's a day… !!!!! Dimash has God's kiss on his heart!!!!

Dimash sometimes forgets lyrics to songs he performed lots of times. He performs in a lot of Languages, it's difficult to remember all lyrics perfectly. In his recent concerts it also happened that he forgot. No big deal, it's actually adorable how he acts in such cases. In my opinion it completely doesn't matter if it's live or not, he does it as beautifully live in his concerts anyway. It might be even that they combine parts that are live with parts from different takes, as it is a studio recording, and they probably want it also to be visually most pleasing.

I think someone mentioned also that it's especially hard to get the words right in this song because he already knew it so well in Chinese. I can imagine that when you are singing a song in a language you don't know and you already know the song in another language you don't know it would be very easy to just slip into the wrong language! Better to look at your notes than to finish the song and discover you'd sung two lines in Chinese by accident!

@@aliciapyszkowski5896 I think it was probably mentioned because she is a vocal coach, analyzing vocals, a realization that she may be analyzing vocals some of which were recorded separate from the video she is watching. It's a matter of honesty and appropriate, I think, in this setting. That being said, I agree with you that it is irrelevant to the experience we average music lovers take from the performance. We need to consider, though, that some of the reactors are coming at this from a far more technical perspective than we Dears are.

It is incredible! Thanks for your commentary. This is one of my favorite Dimash songs. Several engineers have said that they didn't think it had been prerecorded. And a Japanese singer says he's checking because he wants to make sure he hasn't lost the notes or something like that. I have the same feelings you described, not only is there another quality but just a visual interpretation of each note.

It was the first time he sang in Japanese, so referring to his lyrics (phonetically written) makes sense, especially if it were a live performance. I believe it was asked of all of the artists l, that participated that they perform live.

I’ve waited for you to react to this, and am not disappointed. Another reactor (an opera singer) made the observation that since this is the Japanese version of Autumn that Dimash may have the words in front of him to refer to, as switching languages for the same song (as the opera singer has had to do) with different vowels and phrasings can be confusing especially for your muscle memory, and his glance at it may have been just that. Who knows?

There is one muscician reactor said this mic he uses in this video costs a lot like $10,000 or something. So it may be so benefit to pick up sounds so quietly! I forgot his channel but he said this mic is Sony brand ! Dimash’s singing is phenomenal. Subtle, technique is so divine, emotions . Overall just a great great vocalist who performs so well with awesome charisma and presence!

I think he was looking on the words, because this is the first time he sings this song in the original language, Japanese. But Dimash has been singing this song since 2017 in Chinese, it's called "Autumn Strong"

He said him self on that same outfit that he was gonna sing this song live for Tokyo jazz festival, they recorded it and after that they filmed him for the show. maybe they filming him while he was singing live and recorded the song but only from one angle which was the camera angle when he was stepped away from the mic while on the high note. And the other camera angles was taken just for the tv show

I think that he was really singing even though he has practiced it many times doesn't mean that he wouldn't forget some of the words. Since he moves back from the mic to do the higher part shows me that it was live. Also in the 2nd verse at one point he is on a note and you can see his tongue moving. Had he been close to the mic during the higher part of his upper range he would have blown it up. Also in the 2nd verse at one point he is on a note and you can see his tongue moving. There is a new rendition of A Thousand Miles where he does a duet with an opera star of the Kazach opera. You can really hear the change again in the maturity of his lower register in it. He really just keeps getting better. Yes I am hearing it as well.

I think he is really singing real time. There is a moment that you can see him reading the lyrics in front of him... He would not need it if he was doing a lipsync... And yes, this song is especial... Dimash sang a Chinese version of this song, "Autumn Strong", many many times. I know most of them, I really love this song... It seems to me that he collect the beautiful and especial moments in different versions he performed for 4 years and arranged them in this masterpiece. Hug from Brazil!

No soy experto en lip syncing pero si eso es correcto tendríamos que darle el premio del mejor del mundo en ese arte también...es impecable y super preciso el movimiento de sus labios y si puede ver el esta leyendo la melodía también, recordamos que el no habla Japonés e imagino que la tiene escrita foneticamente para no olvidarla...otra cosa que e escuchado es que en Tokio Jazz no se permite el lip sync, o cantas o no cantas...se escoge la grabación que mejor quedo y esa se usa...por eso ningún ruido de respiración o movimiento de aire de ese super micrófono de más de 11mil dólares no fue eliminado y es por eso que solo un maestro en el uso de un micrófono puede usar uno así en un estudio ,porque hay que saber cuando te acercas y cuando te alejas y Dimash es un experto en eso...por lo tanto ese micrófono no requiere de filtros ni ningún artefacto porque el propósito de ese micrófono es recoger todo en un ambiente sellado,hasta el ruido de una gotera...pero como dije,no soy experto en esto ,solo el final de la canción con ese llanto empezado a capela me da a entender que el si esta cantando,exacto como lo demanda Tokyo Jazz Festival...puedo estar equivocado pero aun así no conozco a nadie que supere esa voz y ese centimiento tan puro..aun si es lip sync.

One of the vocal coaches explained the reason he is not using the popper stopper in this live recording is that he can easily use the breath technique this way and sing the song more emotionally. With the stopper we couldn't be able to hear the breathing in the certain moments he wishes us to. Also, while he is singing we can see he is coming near to, or going far away from the mic, why put that effort if it is lip-synced. He is just a master of singing and this way he shows his superiority in singing.

Dimash glances down at the music because he's not so familiar with the Japanese version. The version of this song that he has sung for years is in Chinese. This is the first time he's sung in Japanese, a language that's notoriously difficult in part because of how they pronounce vowels. Japanese reviewers have praised his pronunciation as near ideal. Dimash probably has a marked-up score or lyric sheet to help him with that. You didn't mention it, but that microphone is very high end. Someone else suggested that Dimash chose to forgo the pop shield to allow the microphone to pick up every minute detail of his voice, including his breath that you spoke insightfully about. For me this is one of the most beautiful and deeply expressive interpretations of a song I've ever heard. It is intricately nuanced, but always smoothly and naturally tied to the music and the words. The ending, even after hearing it many times, is so perfectly gaged that my tears always start in my eyes: that sense of resignation, of turning away, after so poignant and climactic a demonstration is vividly and masterfully conveyed. I'm not surprised your students, and surely students the world over, are listening to and striving to emulate this widely encompassing level of technical expertise. Really, the bar has been raised.

I think that as listeners, with all that very personal breathing so close as it were, it is almost as if I was standing as the microphone, and with all that perfect photography, those absolutely beautiful frequencies, all that pleading emotion and perfect facials, added to his arms, hands and bodily involvement, there is no way any Dear could go……of course he didn’t need to sing that song to any of us, now…did he ?

This is a live recording, but done in 2 takes because of the small studio and only one camera operator used. The tapes have then been expertly cut for visual effect, which is based on a still performer, but very active camera positions changing from left to right side views. The microphone is a Flea 45 and as you noticed, picked up every breath in stunning detail. I think Dimash is the only singer I can listen to who aspirates with deliberate effect to further emote the essence of the lyrics, and his version of Ikanaide proves this beyond doubt.

Dimash did not use a pop filter mainly because the song is in Japaneses. Speaking in Japanese rarely requires the tongue to touch the plate and thus lacks harsh consonants sounds. Also; Dimash has sung this song in Mandarin many times see Autumn Strong. However it was his first time singing Ikanaide in Japanese so he had the lyrics for support.
